The boats themselves weren't sold, just the depreciation rights. But you may have something there.

The maintenance schedule got modified yesterday and I see the Chelan is getting a month of drydock time. I don't remember seeing this in past versions of the schedule, does this mean she is finally getting a paint job?

It's in January and February. Can they paint the exterior at that time of year?

Sure they can, you have one maybe 2 good year then boom you look like the last boat that was painted then, the Yakima!

It'd be a fast paint job in any case if they only have a month of yard time. If any paint happens, expect it to be a bodge job.

Chelan's out of drydock now. As of this morning at 7:50, she's parked at Colman Dock, Slip 2, and sporting a fresh coat of paint, I might add.

Looks like she's headed north right now. Well up north of Edmonds as of 10:45 and still headed north according to Marinetraffic.com. I thought it might be sea trials at first, as they went west and circled Blake Island before heading north. But they're not turning around, at least not yet. Hoped I'd get a chance to see her coming into Eagle Harbor, since she's supposed to be going in for annual inspections.
Well, never mind. Looks like they did a hard 180 degree turn. Now maybe they are following their same track back south?

Probably needed a good long run to check something on the main engines.

I vaguely remember when that option was on the table. WSF very wisely chose not to go that route.

If you listen carefully you can still hear the drawn-out reverberating echoes of four hundred deckhands simultaneously screaming, "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!" because all knew that some way, some how, WSF would find a way to make a complete bollocks of it.

And even if WSF didn't make a complete bollocks of it, there are enough problems inherent to hoistable platform decks, even when they're working right, to make anyone run screaming from the room. What probably killed it for WSF (I'm guessing) is the additional dwell time that would be required just to lower and raise the platforms, in addition to cost and other complexities with such a system that I'm sure also factored into their decision. Even BC Ferries seems to be shying away from platforms with their newbuilds and some of the existing vessels. None of the Coastals were built with platforms, although they were engineered to add them later, if needed. The Spirits rarely run with the platforms deployed anymore, and I've noticed on BC Ferries Fleet Page that they now list the Spirit Class vehicle capacity at 410 (w/o platforms) instead of 470. And, they took out the platforms when they re-built Queen of New Westminster. Also, when I rode Island Home a year & a half ago, one of the crew members was telling me what a pain-in-the-butt IH's platforms are, and that they rarely use them even in the busy summer months. In fact, the day I rode IH, one of the platforms was stuck in the down position, waiting to be fixed.

It was just a totally illl-conceived notion. WSF's hydraulic engineers apparently never learned that using hydraulics to lift from above (like the passenger ramp on slip #1 at Colman Dock) is a losing proposition. Or perhaps that's where they learned it... I didn't understand for years why they decided to go hydarulic instead of cable-and-counterbalance myself. But now that I've actually seen a good hydraulic application (Sidney terminal, slip B in the maint yard, and I think #2 slip at Bainbridge), they're a winner. I love the infinitely adjustable ramps.

DOT posted some nice before/after shots of the Chelan's new paintjob. www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157623501904052/Found it via the twitter feed. Still issues, but I think this gets us down to what one boat that looks not so hot in a typical "postcard" shot?

Or did Yakima get painted during her down time this year? But that's still progress. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished version of the Chelan... Thanks for the photo links! Jody

Thanks for the photo links! Yakima is scheduled to get dockside maintenance from mid March through the end of June. If it's not getting any drydock time, I imagine that will limit the areas of the ship that can get painted.

Wow, looks like a new boat. I don't think they even painted the interior of the Queen of New Westminster.

I haven't ridden on QNW since last summer, but everything still looked new then, and certainly the car deck levels were painted on the inside. It shouldn't have detiorated that much since then.

I mean to say that I don't think the car decks were that bad on the QNW to begin with, so they probably didn't paint them. They are still the yellowy off white from pre privatization days.
Cheers,

From David Moseley's weekly update regarding Chelan: Chelan topside paint job The Chelan received a much needed exterior topside paint job during its recent drydock at Todd Pacific Shipyards. Phase two of the paint job involves painting the car deck in the mid-body, including the tunnel and the outer wings, which will be done at a later date. The work is phased to reduce the amount of time the boat is out of service. The Chelan is scheduled to return to service on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route on Monday, March 1. To view images of the newly painted Chelan, visit www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157623501904052/. We recognize the Yakima and Hyak are in need of paint jobs. The Yakima will receive a partial topside coating when it goes into maintenance this March; and the Hyak will receive a partial topside coating in November

Great photos, EGFleet! Chelan sure does look good now, especially next to Hyak-Uggh Speaking of Hyak, does anyone know if she's still supposed to get her MLU next year, or have they pushed that out?
