My guess would be that because her 2nd deck was added quite a while after the other 4 boats, so there were some design changes learned from the other boats.

The freeing ports in the curtain plating are, I suspect, governed by SOLAS regulations. The white railing-vs.-yellow railing was probably just a variant in the paint specs, though I'm not sure what color is supposed to be "standard." I'll weigh in on what color the Yakima's are tomorrow, assuming I remember to look.

I can remember the Chelan having the bigger drains before the SOLAS upgrades. I think that the Spokane (green and white all the way down) and Walla Walla (green and white behind the first vertical beam, yellow in front of them) have different colors along the railings on their car decks too. I would think that being the same type of boats, the painting would be the same within a particular class. However, as you mentioned, the Chelan did have the second car deck added quite a while after the other four did. I guess that she is entitled to have some differences There are differences amongst the other converted Issaquah boats too.

The freeing ports appear in my photo collection around 2001, when the upper wings were installed. There were already preliminary plans at that time to upgrade the boat to SOLAS, as I remember people wandering around the boat with tape measures quite frequently that summer (I was on deck that year) to prepare the bids for phase II of the upgrade.

Okay. Things are starting to make more sense here. I was thinking that the SOLAS upgrades were being done because there was a boat that needed to have cabin refurbishments. Why not upgrade it at the same time the thing is torn apart already vs. using a boat that already had the new(er) cabin. Thanks for the information. It has always puzzled me and I never thought of asking it.

But it involved considerably more than just a refurb of the cabin, I assure you. Extra fire doors, extra fire suppression equipment, remote-operated this and that... they actually had to rewire the whole boat. Why not just upgrade a boat while it's already torn apart? Becau$e $OLA$ upgrade$ have certain challenge$ and re$triction$...

Last time I was aboard that ferry was back on Christmas Eve last year. Boat 1, first crossing at Bremerton.
I still miss the old solariums.

Chelan departing Sidney, an hour or so ago. - her 2nd Sidney departure of the day. - with Sidney Island in the background. Lots of pleasure-boats near Sidney Island today (and likely all summer long) - Behind Sidney Spit, and getting ready to cross the line.

I have some good photos of the Chelan from my trip on August 14...I'll post them when I can.
I have to say, the Chelan is now my favorite ferry on the Strait of Georgia!

I sure hope that when they painted that ferry, they did the car deck and gallery decks, too.
On my last crossing on that thing in December, I vividly remember seeing the car deck on that thing being about as rusty as the curtain plate.

I didn't see much rust in general bleeding through the paint; the most I saw was by the wire feedline on the B side sun deck.

Today on vacation, my wife & I visited Sidney Island & Spit, part of Canada's Gulf Island National Park Reserve. Soon after we arrived on the island, we started walking out to the spit (approx 30 minute walk from the dock to the spit-point). - as we walked out, the Chelan was coming near and rounding the spit, on her way to Sidney on her first International trip of the day. Here's what she looked like as we walked along the spit: ---------------------- - you can see some of the shorebirds in this shot: a gull, and a heron on a pole. - Sailing in front of the Sidney waterfront. - coming into the dock at Sidney.

Nice pictures... I think Evergreen said that Chelan might be coming down to Mukilteo / Clinton run. I like the heavy doors they have when you come up the stairs from the car deck.

:)these evergreen fleet shots are great, and these boats look great after many years of service, and have maintained their same basic livery all of my shipping life, I don't feel the same looking at our so called improved assets of our olympic hahnboards, of our ten times better pvte. system, yeah! thanks again to my brother for his hard work of presentation of my past works, the QPR one was done in 1966,when I was still crew! :)mrdot

Well, the Chelan seems to have found her way down to Southworth. I was reading the COI documents tonight and the total passenger capacity (including crew) is 1217. I could not find any mention of the "1076" referenced on WSF's M/V Chelan page. The SOLAS documents just said that she passed. They did not have any specific passenger limits on them. It looks like a couple of spots did not get a new coat of paint with the rest of the boat The Kittitas, Cathlamet, Chelan and Sealth have really nice tile work in the heads. They put tiles in that match the base colors of the interior I like the Chelan

I have to say and I never thought I would say it but, I miss the Chelan. She was very well maintained and much smother then the kit and the Cat. A lot less shaky and much easier on my back.
