Anyone who thus modifies one of my threads will be summarily banned. Seeing as it's also already happened, Flugel has to go now. “No trespassing! Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.”...pretty harsh for someone who borrows from Charles Schultz for their avatar... Especially the Leo Buscaglia reference...

She propagated a lot of violence in the strip.

A quick historical note: In 1990, when Stena had the Crown Princess Victoria as well as the Vancouver Island Princess on hand, they looked into the possibility of a Victoria - Anacortes route, presumably operating out of downtown Victoria. They were unable to reach a deal to lease land from the port of Anacortes. (Source: Vancouver Sun)
Why they would have thought they could make a go of competing with the already marginal Sidney route operated by WSF is beyond me, but history shows they didn't understand this market very well, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

Yesterday’s International-Route trip was the 2nd time that I’ve done the route; the previous time was 2 years ago in the opposite direction.
This time I had a better idea of where we were going, and what the landmarks were. I also had a ferry-schedule page handy, to keep track of where the other ferries where, so that I knew where and when to look for them. When we passed Spieden Island, we took a route close to the island, between a small island and Spieden. I saw a few of the deer on the island.
It was a rainy day, so most of my photos and hanging-out on the car deck, out the large windows, on the main deck and on the wings. I chatted quite a bit with the friendly deckhands who were walking the car-decks in a circuit.
I was surprised at how much traffic there was for the morning sailing. We were 75% full, and the deckhand said that was unusually light. I had assumed that traffic would be lower, but that’s based on my previous experience with shoulder-season travel. But this was July.
My wife was content to sit in a seat and read, and even made it out to the shelter deck a few times to look at people’s dogs (there were some cute dogs on the shelter decks).

I just want to know a little bit of history for the Anacortes to Sidney B.C. By, what vessels have been on the Anacortes to Sidney B.C route by the years that the vessel served the route for?

Why does WSF show this on their schedule page for the Anacortes-Sidney, BC route? Anacortes 8:25 Orcas Island----- Friday Harbor 9:45 Sidney B.C 11:05 Arrival. So why is their no departure from Orcas Island? Is arrivals to Orcas Island on this route?

The International Route does not stop at Orcas any time of the year. Karl's right. It used to stop at Orcas on the way to Sidney, but they dropped that stop several years ago.
On the summer schedule, it goes like this:
lv. Anacortes: 8:25am lv. Friday Harbor: 9:45am ar. Sidney: 11:05am -------------------- lv. Sidney: 12:00pm ar. Anacortes: 2:10pm -------------------- lv. Anacortes: 2:50pm ar. Sidney: 5:00pm -------------------- lv. Sidney: 5:55pm lv. Friday Harbor: 7:25pm ar. Anacortes: 8:30pm
And, in the fall, it will look like this:
lv. Anacortes: 8:30am lv. Friday Harbor: 9:55am ar. Sidney: 11:10am -------------------- lv. Sidney: 12:05pm lv. Friday Harbor: 1:55pm ar. Anacortes: 3:00pm
For those interested, Elwha will be running the International Route in the Fall again this year.

I think Karl is correct - it's there simply to indicate that the international route no longer stops at Orcas.

That's a great photo. Thanks for posting it. In 1983, Evergreen would have been one of the mainline boats, or perhaps even the Sidney boat, if a Super wasn't running the route at that time. The concept of the inter-Island ferry did not come until later - I want to say late 80's, but I'm not really sure. Our experts, EGFleet, or Barnacle, can probably tell us for sure. This was taken from Elwha, she was on the international for the Summer. After about mid September, Evergreen State would handle the run to Sidney for the winter. Did the Anacortes-Sidney, BC use to operate during the winter?

Yes, from about 1960 to 2002.

And, in 1980, the Sidney route had a reduced capacity and one round trip for the first part of the summer that year.
Because of the sinking of the Hood Canal Bridge in February 1979, ferries had to be placed on the Canal resulting in a loss of two ferries from regular service routes. The TILLIKUM from Vashon Island and the KULSHAN from Columbia Beach. Both of those ferries were on the Canal for 1980. The NISQUALLY was replacing the TILLIKUM at Vashon in the first part of the summer schedule and the San Juans were missing their summer inter-island ferry VASHON, which was assisting the ILLAHEE and OLYMPIC on the southern Whidbey run.
The KLICKITAT (still with her wooden cabin) was used as the international ferry for the first part of the summer schedule in 1980. The KALEETAN and EVERGREEN STATE did the domestic runs out of Anacortes. The KLICKITAT worked in the islands after doing the morning round trip to Sidney.
Everyone was waiting for the new ISSAQUAH to be ready for service.
After the ISSY was ready, she was placed on the Vashon Island run, sending the NISQUALLY to Columbia Beach and the VASHON to the San Juans. Normal service to Sidney was restored with the EVERGREEN STATE and inter-island service resumed as well as express runs out of Anacortes to the islands by the KALEETAN and KLICKITAT.
The Kingston run had only one ferry that summer with the ELWHA serving, compared to two in 1978 (ELWHA and NISQUALLY).
There were no backup ferries available in the summer of 1980. All of the available ferries were in service that year.

Here is my "from the bow" video of an international-route sailing: Sidney to Anacortes, noon on July 14, 2014.
I was on Chelan.
Video includes us passing Klahowya in Upright Channel, and a cormorant who lives in a berth-dolphin at Anacortes' berth #1.

The Sidney to Anacortes route is a beautiful run especially on a sunny day. I always thought Speiden Island was kinda cool. I have never done the non stop trip both trips I did on the Elwha were the evening sailings which stoped at Friday Harbor. How smoothly was immagration and customs for you?? Dont you do something in Sidney before you board??

Dont you do something in Sidney before you board?? There is pre-immigration clearance in Sidney prior to boarding which is why they want you in line and with your car 90 minutes prior to departure. They do the same thing with Coho in Victoria. We'll be dealing with that first-hand on August 9th when we return home from our Sunshine Coast/Vancouver Island trip. Coho leaves Victoria at 3:00pm but we need to be in line and with our car at 1:30pm.

How smoothly was immagration and customs for you?? My customs/immigration experience at Anacortes was not a problem, but it did take a bit longer for me, than usual: more questions, and they looked through my trunk (including my cooler & duffel-bag). I think this is because I was travelling alone, and it was not part of a "from here to there" type of trip. ie. last time, it was myself and my wife, and our reason for being in the USA was to end our 12 day trip by coming home via Anacortes. This time, I was a lone male, with a destination style trip that might be hard for people to understand. ie. "I'm doing hobby photography in the San Juans and Port Townsend areas." No worries, but it just took a few more questions and they checked my bag. It was ok.

When I went down through Pacific Highway for the Evergreen Retirement trip I told them exactly what I was doing. Ferry trips in the San Juan Islands. One of their ships is being retired and I am a ferry enthusiest going down for some trips. I actually told them that and the one lady on the way down was pretty friendly. She said she dident think there was people like me that did that lol! Coming back through Peace Arch was fine too. I said the same thing. And I was alone also.
I have had trouble before at the Coho offloading in Victoria we got searched. Anacortes never a problem. I think travelling cross border by ferry is more hassle cause the land borders you might have to wait but sometimes could be faster.
I hope you dident have your camera tripod set up on your passenger seat offloading in Anacortes! That might looked suspicous lol!

But I did do that car-fiming on my boarding and disembarking of Coho. You'll see that video, probably tomorrow.

When I got to the back of the customs line-up and was idling, I turned off my camera, and I laid the camera & tripod on my car's back seat (off and clearly in view). - the visible camera supports the purpose of my trip.

On the first trip each year to Sidney, does anything special happen to the ferry?
