Do people welcome the ferry in Sidney then? If so, whom? Mr ferryman 1141. You need to read the forum threads here before asking a whole lot of questions. Then restrict yourself to just a few questions each day. If you do that, slowly but surely you will get to know the ferries (in general) and this forum, in particular. We would like you to become a member who does more then just asking so many questions every day. Carry on asking too many questions and some people just might get 'on your case' as they say. I don't want to see that happen and hopefully you don't want it either.
Business people in Sidney and the Victoria area in general welcome visitors who come on the ferry from Anacortes. They hopefully come and spend money eating in restaurants, staying in hotels, buying stuff in stores, etc. Many Canadians like to use the ferry to Anacortes so that they can do the same in the USA. Tourism & visiting your neighbours is a good thing.

Does anyone know the lane assignments in Sidney?

Does anyone know the lane assignments in Sidney? I'd love to help, but I don't understand the question. At the toll booth, they tell you which lane to park in. You park in that lane, and then wait for the ferry to load.

Does anyone know the lane assignments in Sidney? Are you asking about the WSF's terminal in Sidney (with sailings to Anacortes & Friday Harbor), or the nearby & much larger BCF's terminal at Swartz Bay which has sailings to six destinations?

Hi everyone! Next weekend I'm planning to take a trip on the Elwha from Anacortes to Sidney and back. As there's only one trip per day, I'm wondering if I'd have enough time to walk off, clear customs, and still make the return sailing to Anacortes. Thank you!

I think the only traffic that matters is the traffic getting back onto the boat. It typically isn't very busy going WB in the fall so traffic should be light. It may seem crowded since many people take the Anacortes -> FH leg of this trip (I did last weekend and over 2/3 of the boat was FH traffic).
Enjoy your trip!

Apparently Washington state was not paying attention when our Campbell Liberal government directed BC Ferries to do their 'alternate service provider' charade. It resulted in exactly zero qualified applicants applying for any routes which didn't make money, which describes the Sidney run. BC Ferries would have no interest in a route that essentially would compete with Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, as well as lose money. If WSF doesn't want to transport cars from Anacortes or Bellingham to Vancouver Island, the route is a goner.

Folks, here is a multiple part post on future of the Anacortes-Sidney route. There is an ongoing Joint Transportation Committee study led by Washington State into the matter: There will be an update a week from Thursday streaming on TVW. Finally, with time seemingly short, this is a polite FYI that the San Juan County Economic Development Council has a survey over to the field.

bump to signify I moved the post above into this existing thread. Thanks, this works for me too. In any event let's try to keep the discussion in one place.

Again... I can't believe the futility of this process. In normal times there would be no interest from the private sector, without heavy subsidy. In these Covid19 days, where tourism is on life support, it seems like a notion from some weird parallel universe.

If WSF doesn't operate the route with its heavy subsidy, I can't see anyone else stepping in. It makes for an interesting study, but that's about as far as I see it going. I am curious if COVID is going to kill Anacortes-Sidney. The route has been on the chopping block before. This pandemic, in conjunction with the last Eyman anti-tax initiative that was passed, might be that final nail in the coffin, so to speak. There would be a number of benefits to WSF for not operating the route: 1. No more SOLAS requirements 2. Additional space at the Anacortes terminal opened up for vehicle staging or parking 3. Simplification of the Anacortes terminal building replacement, should that ever come to pass. They wouldn't have to create a space for customs. 4. Frees up a vessel - no need for a 5th boat in the islands during the summer. ANA-SJI could go to 4-vessel service year round, with additional hours in the summer.

We have to remember this study started before Covid19 became serious. It was more a logical consequence of 976 passage plus the need to address the recapitalization needs of WSF. The money has to come from somewhere and ferry fares are just getting too high. I do not see a winnable privatization conversation until 2022 when the border reopens before then and some idea of what ridership will be is on offer. Also if the Black Ball Line survives could be a factor. It would not surprise me considering the $1.3 Billion dollar hole in the state transportation budget if this expenditure was cut or used as leverage in a 2021 state transportation package.

A couple of things: 1) The Joint Transportation Committee's current draft agenda has the Anacortes-Sidney briefing between 9:35 and 10 AM Thursday. It'll stream on TVW.org so I'm confident by Thursday night we're gonna have some smokin' haht takes here! 2) I added a few photos to my 11/2018 Anacortes-Sidney Flickr album.

Thought I'd repost this here from the last time Anacortes-Sidney had serious problems... from page 7 of this thread with my emphasis: I tend to agree; hate to see the route leave, but WSF shouldn’t have to foot a 9 million dollar bill, so Vancouver Island can rake in a few tourist dollars. If Sidney and Victoria are so concerned, they should take matters into their own hands and start contributing to the ferry’s operating costs. What do you think; split it half way at 4.5 million per year? (Obviously the city doesn’t have this kind of money, but I think it demonstrates the imbalance of the current situation) What is really surprising me, is that even with all the media coverage, I haven’t heard any rumblings from a ‘Save Our Anacortes Ferry’ group; the passion for the route from the masses seems to have died. I really get the sense that this time, the route is finished.

Just a little update before Thursday... the slide deck for the Anacortes-Sidney presentation is online. Very weak on details. The event will be on TVW.org livestream Thursday from 9 til 10:30 AM ( agenda). Anacortes-Sidney should be 9:35-10:05 AM.

I watched this morning's briefing which is now online at TVW 25:58 in. A few things came to mind watching it: 1) I am concerned that it seems the MLA (BC provincial legislator) for Sidney in MLA Adam Olsen is not being consulted. This is very inappropriate. 2) I'm grateful the economic impacts of lost jobs and tax revenue if the run were lost or moved to Bellingham are being considered. The risk of lasting damage to my fellow Skagitonians and I would argue possibly the Saanich Peninsula is real. Also what private investor wants to run a slow ferry at fares competitive with BC Ferries and Black Ball because a fast one thru the San Juan Islands means lawfare! 3) I do hope there is an opportunity for public comment please on the Draft Study. I am sure a lot of Washingtonians - and Saanich Peninsula folks also - will have thoughts. Finally, worth reminding this forum that I took an Anacortes-Sidney Ferry Ride in 11/2018. Well, while it IS nice to consult with the neighbors, BC doesn't foot the bill and as such doesn't get a huge say in how another state in another country runs its affairs. Still, a courtesy notice would be appropriate (as should the MLA's staff be minding the store).

Asked at some point to chip in something besides their contribution in fares also because we just can't keep on doing things the same old way and expect better results.

I can't see any appetite for a BC contribution while Canada is being continually attacked by the USA in a trade war.
