So... I figured I'd try to combine two topics: one serious, one not.
With the tabling of the provincial budget and related carbon tax, will BC Ferries simply increase the fuel surcharge or would they show it as a separate "green" surcharge?
Also, I'm really feeling that some communities have been ripped off when it comes to naming of the ships. Should BC Ferries ever get back into the "Queen of" business, what communities should get new BC Ferries named after them?
Of course, given my home town, I think there should be a Queen of Prince George... if Rupert can have its own Queen, why can't we (even though we are admittedly land-locked)? A strong second choice for me is a Queen of Port Coquitlam... dammit, if Coquitlam has a queen, Po Co should too!

Well if they resurrect the Queen of moniker then maybe the Queen of Richmond can come out of hiding and do her runs in public rather than blacked out at night. Queen of Gibson's is a good one because it may attract Whiskey advertising. Queen of Chemainus could have permanent paintings all over it similar to the Coastals but permanent. I'll leave it at that for now

I imagine they would qualify for the corporate tax break to off set the carbon tax.... but leave it to BCFS to screw the public at any given opportunity.

The management decided they wanted to remove all traces of the old ferry service and to re brand it. That is why they replaced the Dogwood with the "Mating Slugs" as the logo. They also quit naming the ships Queen of. Just for fun, the crews usually have a pet name for their ship, some of them are... Queen of Nanaimo......Nanny Queen of Sidney.........Cream of Kidney Howe Sound Queen.....Hound Dog Saltspring Queen........Salty Vesuvius Queen..........Soovie Tachek.........................Paycheck Skeena Queen..............Flying Flounder, Floundering Flounder Queen of Cumberland............Cummerbund Pender Queen.....................Pender Bender Queen of the Islands..........Queen of the Jungles Chilliwack............................Chilly Wanker Esquimalt............................Eskimo Spirit Class.........................Spooks Spirit of B.C.........................SOB Spirit of Vancouver.............SOV Cowichan...........................Cow Coquitlam..........................Coke
I can't tell you what the Klitsa and the Saanich are on this site.

When the Skeena Queen was built, there were to be at least two more built. I wonder what they would have been called? Probably after rivers, don't you think? I was wondering if there may have been a river theme continued with a Fraser Queen.

I really wish we had a Queen of Qualicum, Queen of Courtenay and Queen of Campbell River. Don't forget Queen of Langley, Queen of Abbotsford, Queen of Maple Ridge, Queen of Pitt Meadows, etc.

If I'm not mistaken, I thought I read that BCF is exempt from the carbon tax.
The Queen of names will not come back as long as the BCF administration stays as it is now. It would be nice, I think they have a lot more class than "coastal class", but they are not coming back.

It's spelled "Courtenay." It's not like there's one near Kennedy Space Center... Oh wait, there is one.

For our own fun and amusement, perhaps we should instigate several polls over the next weeks (months?) to come up with HONOURARY "Queen-names" for BCFS vessels which currently are not regal in nonmenclature.
Of course, these would be completely unofficial and for our internal fun and use only, but it might prove somewhat interesting. This could even extend as far as the K-class boats (but I would only get to them after the others are re-branded) with the caveat that we might want to reserve re-naming "other" vessels after areas where the K-classers currently operate and could potentially be 'nicknamed' after.

Yikes... that's too many... Names that won't work...Skidigate Queen (no one knows where it is...) Queen of Port Hardy, Queen of Port McNeil (too portable ;D. These names just don't flow nicely.) Malcom/Sointula Queen (too obscure and lack harmony in their pronounciation) Cormorant Queen (too flighty ;D) Queen of Powell River (her original name is better, and it's already in use) Queen of Courtenay/Courtenay Queen (Too many syllables: the name wouldn't flow nicely.) Queen of Campbell River (awkward...) Texada Queen (already been done) Queen of Richmond (this one is trademarked somewhere, i'm sure) Queen of Abbotsford, Queen of Langley, Queen of Delta (these ones are absolutely not allowed. Just too narrow in geographical reference.) Granville Queen, Burrard Queen (Too Vancouverish) Fraser Queen, Columbia Queen (They are rivers, not oceans) Names that could work: Campbell River Queen (cool ) Queen of Courtney/Courtney QueenQueen of Comox/Comox Queen (hasn't this been done before?) Gibsons Queen (there's a humorous reference in the Bannerman's book as to why Gibson's was never chosen for a name (I believe it was to have been the Chinook, which became Sechelt Queen.) because WAC Bennett had a political opponent at the time named Gibson) Gabriola Queen, Galiano Queen (but I think they would be better as just the names, without the 'queen') One name that I'd love to see come back, is Langdale Queen, but I would want a nice looking ship, not one of these crude little barges.

Fraser Queen, Columbia Queen (They are rivers, not oceans) Ummmm, ever heard of the Skeena Queen? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere when they were first building her and were planning on building another 2 that one of the other names was going to be Fraser Queen.

Stikine Queen ;D
I think we must look beyond just the Queens, I think that on a greater scale:
Qualicum & Quilchena would make good "Q" classes are there any "K"s out there still?
Queen of Comox, Queen of Cortenay are good for Intermediate Classes and Queen of Campbell [River] is located in Victoria.
Many of the city names suggested are too small and out of the way. Others, like Queen of Port **** are just awkward. Many names should be recycled. Becoming the Queen of Sidney II or Queen of Sidney-A (for Star Trek fans out there).

I wonder what we'd think of "Queen of Prince Rupert" if there wasn't one? If you look at most of the K, Q, and T names, they are about as obscure as you can get and some of them not even coastal, so let your imagination run wild.

Kwagiulth and Koksilah come to mind.
Chinook jargon can give you a few other ideas, such as Kloshe, Klahanie, Konaway, or Klootchman.

The Skeena Queen was named to honour the Skeena region more so than the river itself. The BC provincial minister responsible for BC Ferries at the time was none other than Dan Miller who was MLA for the North Coast district (Prince Rupert & area), later premier for a short while, and I believe currently sits on the board of BCFS. I think that most will know that the Skeena region includes Prince Rupert, Terrace, Kitimat, and further inland to the Smithers and area.
I don't know if there are any other ferries named for regions rather than towns/cities.

The Alberni arguably is named for the Region, as there was no City of Alberni in 1976. Amalgamation occured prior to that.
John, I have heard of silly names, but the Queen of Prince Rupert? That has to be amongst the worst! It is too long, double regal? Next you are going to start suggesting land locked cities like Kamloops (note: ANOTHER K!) or Chilliwack... then do something like stick them up North! I can honestly say, there is NO way BC Ferries will EVERY use such a silly name as the "Queen of Prince Rupert"...
And now for something completely different:
Back on topic: The Larch (it's green)

I would expect that Sunshine Coast Queen is name that will never be matched to any ship with as much character as the original, and I doubt that anyone would want to run the peril of using Queen of the North again. Maybe there should be an official retirement ceremony, and have them raised to the roof of the shipbuilder's cathedral.

The "mid coast express" route was created by Ross Harris who, in my opinion, was given a patronage appointment far beyond his capabilities. Who gave him the job? His brother in law Dan Miller. Where did the run go to? Dan Millers riding. They paid the person who was already providing the service $ 12, 000,000.00 to go away. I feel they created a very expensive white elephant so Dan Miller could get votes. We are still paying for it.

How about a unique schedule variance that only takes place once every four years, when the Queen of Richmond makes a few round trips on a non-specified route every February 29th.

Do we know tomorrow's route yet? Or will it be decided at the last moment? I'd really like to see that beloved Dogwood Carpet (tm) again!
