How about a different name for Saltspring?
Aboriginal peoples had several names for Salt Spring Island. The Cowichan called it Klaathem, which in their language means "salt." The Saanich called it CUAN, which means "each end," referring to mountains at each end of the island). Variations of this information have passed by word of mouth from generation to generation of Coast Salish people.

If you're a local... its "Salt Spring". Its also gives reason to the short form, "SSI". I've always thought that the most elementary courtesy you can do someone is to call them what they want to be called. No matter what Canada Post or any other outsider thinks, if you spend some time on the island, or even look at all the websites from people who live and have businesses there, it's clear that the overwhelming choice is Salt Spring Island. In the '60s, BC Ferries mistakenly named their vessel Saltspring Queen and referred to Saltspring Island; their schedules now show Salt Spring.

I just had a look at my BC Road atlas from MapArt and on page 77 and 89: Victoria and Environs, it's spelled Saltspring. I have seen it spelled Salt Spring as well, but can't remember what book it was in. I personally believe this to be the "Official" spelling.
I can see where people would spell it as two words though. "Salt Spring" since that would make the name "Grammatically Correct".

For example "A'int is a contraction". ;D The English Police....

More interested in what the people who actually live there call it. Most of the time, that's Salt Spring. Sigh! A name is always "grammatically correct" simply because it is usually the subject of a sentence. For example "A'int is a contraction". ;D The English Police.... There's an excellent book called 'The Language Instinct- How the Mind Creates Language', by a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at M.I.T. He points out that if you really want insight into how language works and how people communicate, you don't study grammar, you study how people actually talk and write. Same thing applies to place names, I think. Official schmofficial.

I have lived on Salt Spring/Saltspring island for 33 years. It used to be Saltspring, and still is to the old timers. Then someone decided that was incorrect and the controversy started. Valdy once described Saltspring as "A body of land surrounded by a difference of opinion". If you get 3 Saltspringers together you will get 4 different opinions. Definition of confusion...Fathers day on Saltspring...(we recycle a lot) also known as Bedspring island. The south end is still considered "Hippie" territory with tie dyed shirts and head bands. The north end is Considered the "Business" end with Rotary and most shops and resteraunts. By the way, Southey point is at the extreme north end and Upper Ganges road is below Lower Ganges road. There is a lot of history in this area. I enjoyed working on the Salty.

I have wondered this name thing for some time too. Eventually I determined that it must be Salt Spring because that's what on the sign at the top of the hill coming off the ferry at Fulford Harbour. I deemed that an actual road sign must be the correct way it's written. (yes, even though it's a sign on SSI! ;D)

Don't believe anything you see on Saltspring, it may just be fumes from the home grown wafting through the park.

I like the sound of "Queen of Moodyville"
"Moodyville" being the original name of North Vancouver when it was a mill town before Vancouver came into existence.

That is not appropriate.
We all have our beefs with the BCFS, but we don't need to use crude references to express this, at least not on this forum.

Any moderator reading this, please get a fresh eraser and delete that line. Many thanks! Do you have to praise me every time I do something moderator-ish?

You missed the Conch Chowder and real Key Lime Pie. Not those fake Key Lime Pies that look like Grasshopper Pie. Nor bright green versions of Lemon Meringue. But the true light yellow green one, made from the tiny Key Limes. I will leave off the libation that Hemingway used to drink, due to the ages of some, but of course that will be served too.

I've been reading a thread on boards.sportslogos.net/index.php?showtopic=67867 about sports team nicknames that are most-fitting and based on some sort of unique local geography or industry or culture (ie. New Orleans Saints, Seattle Sounders, Pittsburgh Steelers). Extending that idea to ferry names, here are some ideas: - Salish Queen - Cottage Queen - Butchart Queen - Paper Queen - Forestry Queen - Penelakut Queen - Stuart Channel Queen - Sutil Queen - Utopia Queen - Transcendental Queen

One of the saddest things about our old "Queens" being retired and scrapped is the fact that we are slowly losing our "Queens", as in Queen of Esquimalt, Queen of Tsawwassen, etc, and in their place getting politically correct names with words like "Spirit" and "Inspiration" instead. What would be wrong with "Queen of Tsawwassen II", for instance? I think this would be a great way to preserve our maritime heritage and a good way to link the old with the new. Island Sky. Can somebody please explain just what the hell that name is supposed to mean? It sounds great, but talk about generic. You could use that name for almost anything located on an Island. Guess I'm just getting old.
