Sometime in spring, I didn't ask alot of questions, I helped decorate the ship.

I rode the MV Mill Bay today. I asked an engineer about the retirement date and he said it will be sometime in May 2011.
I took photos of the Christmas decorations on the ship. I'll post them in the photo thread tonight.
Also, the officer gave each passenger a pamphlet (along with the ticket-receipts). The pamphlet is on the route's history. It's likely part of a "save the route" low-key education campaign. Or just a goodbye-ship campaign. - I'll post photos of that, too.

The story from the Cowichan News-Leader, posted above, fails to mention the BC Ferries has already invited bids for the rebuilding of both docks in preparation for the Klitsa. Seems to me the route is pretty safe, unless the province agrees to change the Contract. Despite the sentimentality over the Mill Bay, I think users of the route will consider the Klitsa a step up.

Wonder what the cost of adjusting the docks for the Klista actually is?? The wingwalls on the slips are supposed to be adjustable --crew member told me back in '01 they were built to take a PR class ship for emergency purposes, and the wingwalls were set quite wide in their first year of operation after rebuilding. The angle was subsequently narrowed to make a better fit with the Mill Bay

Somebody called 'morethoughts' posted this comment under the news story in the last post:
Might this be a possibility for sometime in the future?

I'll get a job, work for a year or so, then I'll buy 1/50th of her with whoever else wants to pitch in (I'm expecting that she'll be priced around $500,000 or less, due to her age)

One small detail that may save The Viking a few dollars. Ships' shares are always reckoned in increments of 64ths. If the Viking wants a small piece of the MillBay he need only buy 1/64th of the ship instead of 1/50th.
I found out about this when I went to register my own vessel with Transport Canada. It's done this way in all countries and I suppose has roots in the 15th century or, perhaps, comes from an even earlier time.

Went down to the Brentwood bay terminal today, and found their already doing upgrading. The walkway on the dock is gone and one lane is closed so traffic is now waiting in the over full on the road. They also have part of the park path dugout to widen the dock for three lanes.
I have taken some pictures of the work, but I do not want to get the URL from my Photobucket site. I wish to share if there is anyway I can post my pictures straight from my documents on my computer.
They will be posted soon.

Sixty-four was often a term used for a British ship of the line with 64 mounted guns. Not sure if that is the reference to shares in a ship. I would think the ship should be offered to either Brentwood or Mill Bay to have it moored somewhere on the waterfront. Well... trying to figure potential uses for it might be stretch, though.

We did the 1:15 / 1:50 roundtrip. So if you were around before or shortly after that, we might have seen you...

Wow, Can't believe I missed my oppotunity. I have no idea the time, but I think thats when I got to the terminal. If anyone ever does that route and you want to meet me just massege me. Make sure to massage me a few days before so i can plan it out. Saturdays, sundays are my free days.
Also there is a retirement celebration for the Milly on May 1.

Kinda sad to see the old MILL BAY retire. I've been aboard her once in the mid 1980s. Quite a few decks to explore. Will miss that feature on that run.

I'm trying for the 14:30 round trip from Brentwood (not sure of the precise time) with my friend on Good Friday...can't make it for the celebration May 1. I'll take lots of pictures with my little Fuji 500 camera.

Here is a dedication to the Milly shot in a few films. A moment of history and change over the years. Including fame.
I was also around for a day when they filmed mermaid chair which since discovering this, i had no idea the Milly made her appearance in it.

And here is the celebration times for the little ferry. Hope to see you there, I will be there for sure. Sorry folks, I removed the video because this was done by a friend of mine. So hopefully things turn out ok in the end. P.S. The crane on the side of the dock has left the brentwood dock. Attachments:filename (25.35 KB)
