Here is a dedication to the Milly shot in a few films. A moment of history and change over the years. Including fame. I was also around for a day when they filmed mermaid chair which since discovering this, i had no idea the Milly made her appearance in it. This is a nice tribute to the MILL BAY. There is, however, a big no no in the second film. This is the Black Point, 2002. The actor gets out of his car and starts to smoke a cigarette. He tosses it overboard. This isn't a good teaching tool in the right way of riding ferries. That scene should have been cut out. The wrong way of riding ferries. Smoking is NEVER allowed on the car deck!

Sorry folks, I removed the video because this was done by a friend of mine. So hopefully things turn out ok in the end.
And its back, Sorry about that. My friend removed it early because of technical dificulties.
Also news yesterday the Mill Bay ferry smashed into the brentwood dock. TSB looked at the ferry and said she was not in ship shape to continue for the day. The reason was there was a 12 cm hole above the waterline. Thats what I heard.
This was an intresting change of events, being close to retirement. And its back, Sorry about that. My friend removed it early because of technical dificulties. Nice videos but, horror of horrors, the horn sounds used in the videos are definitely not the actual horn on the Mill Bay. Also, with the impending ship swap, I noticed when I was on the Mill Bay on saturday that the archival photo display had been taken down. I wonder if this will be moved to the Klitsa? I also wonder if the commemorative ship's wreath will be moved to the new ship as well. The only point that marrs the whole scenario is that they are replacing the geographically relevant vessel name Mill Bay with perhaps the worst sounding name in the whole fleet!

Great video tribute! Is that Jack Nicholson in that first movie clip?

I found the earlier reference to 64 shares in a ship interesting. An old tug boat owner told me the reason for 64 shares was it made dividing up the profit between the owner, captain and crew easier because of all the combinations of shares available. Lloyd's Register has this information: "A minute of the General Shipowners Society of December 11, 1823, records the Committee also conceive that the division of the property on ships, into sixty four assumed shares, upon the binary principle of halving the ship, and proportions under each, down to a sixty-fourth part, will be found in practice to be a more convenient system. This indicates that, as early as 1823, discussions for a new system for the division of the shares of a ship were underway." www.lr.org/Images/25 64 Shares_tcm155-173538.pdf

I'm attending the farewell even for the MV Mill Bay tomorrow, I'm wondering if anybody in Victoria would know what is the best transit route(s) to get to Brentwood Bay from the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal? Which route(s) would drop me off closest to the Brentwood Bay Terminal? Will there be any special buses for this particular event?

I don't know if this sort of event is really that noteworthy for BCTransit, but when I did a couple trips myself, I used the No. 81 bus. It may not be particularly direct, but then there isn't a direct route to Brentwood. This one at least gets you closest to it without having to change busses.

Which route(s) would drop me off closest to the Brentwood Bay Terminal? Will there be any special buses for this particular event? I've never been aboard the Victoria transit system, but have looked up the service on the net. The Route 75 goes to the Brentwood area. It leaves Saanichton Exchange hourly. www.bctransit.com/regions/vic/schedules/map.cfm?p=map.rname&&line=75www.bctransit.com/regions/vic/schedules/schedule.cfm?p=dir.text&route=75:1&day=7&I think you'll need to take the 71, 72, 73, 81, 82, whichever route you need to take from SB to connect to the 75 at SE. Ask a driver for the best advice. I wish all the participants up on your side of the line a good sailing aboard the MILL BAY on her last day. Hopefully, someone will find a good use for this vessel after her captain rings "Finished With Engines" on her telegraph for the last time. Thank you for your service, MV MILL BAY, from all of us on the US side of the border!

Since I live close by, Your best bet on getting to brentwood would be taking the 72, or 73 to saanich exchange then transfer to a 75. It will go pass the Brentwood terminal on its way down to victoria.
There is also the 81, but it goes through the village. You would have to walk down from verdier.
So You would take a 72, or 73 from swartz bay to Saanich Exchange then the 75 to brentwood.
Hope this helps Ferrydude2011 and all who read this.

Many forum members attended the May 1st "Final Day" for the MV Mill Bay.
The official party in the park (beside the Brentwood terminal) featured burgers cooked by Mr. Hahn, Ms. Marshall, Mr. Corrigan, etc.
Music featured Clive, the BC Ferries officer from the Queen of Burnaby (he's the fellow who wrote a song about the Queen of the North).
Some of us forum-veterans got to meet or see members "Canadian Viking", "Hull Numbers" and "Quinsam Teen" for the first times.
The Mill Bay ship is sold, and leaves tomorrow under power by her new owners, destined to be a fishing lodge (or camp?) in Knight Inlet.
The new-old ship Klitsa has 2 new z-drives, of the same make (from a Norwegian company) that is used on the Quinsam & Quinitsa, so there is compatibility between ships.
The ship's master today commented on how they will get used to sailing with a joystick, and sailing a more direct route near the Mill Bay terminal (no more need to hug the beach while approaching for a backing-into the berth).
Klitsa will have part of her side-structure used as a passenger sun-deck, similar to what is done on the Skeena Queen's side.
A good fun day on land & water. - traffic was light on the ship, on the sailings that I took. No worries about overloads, although I'm not around for the coveted "final sailing" of the day.

So, they're going to allow people up top on the Klitsa? That will be a first for any of the K or Q vessels. I guess that's a reflection on the tourist aspect of the crossing. Nice.
I suppose that one record the Mill Bay holds will probably never be broken; longest uninterrupted service by the same vessel on one route, anywhere on our coast. As far as I know, she never went elsewhere since the time of her launching, even to fill in.
My first ride was when she was still a part of Coast Ferries. Admirably dependable service by a spartan but plucky little boat. Job well done.
Hope everyone had a good time, and that all who wanted to were able to get on the last sailing. Was there applause and honking, as when the last Albion run pulled into Fort Langley?

Not anything spectacular. By the time of the last arrival at Brentwood, the whole town is generally already shut down, anyway, so there was no one left around. The ferry did sound its horn on approaching the berth for the last time, but that was pretty much it. Also, the actual dispensation of the ship is going to be something more like the Albert J. Savoie - R J Breadner is now used for. Apparently the company it has been sold to is more of a marine construction firm, so the powered, self-propelled aspect of the ship appeals to them very much, as well as the very usable deck space.

The Mill Bay is Northbound in Stuart Channel, off Crofton right now. My girlfriends house being right on the water overlooking the channel, the Bowen Queens whistle caught my attention since she would obviously rarely ever have to sound it en route. I look out the window, and there's the Mill Bay cruising by.
The Bowen Queen gave her 8 short whistles in groups of two.
BC Ferries wasted no time in removing company logos, as well as the name off of her bulwark. She's sailing up north nameless, and just has the blue stripe down the side.
Pictures to follow

She is apparently not transmitting any kind of AIS information, then, as SIItech still shows her sitting at Mill Bay, and the AIS map shows nothing at all.

Yeah I noticed the same thing when I checked Siitech a few mins ago! Marinetraffic.com still shows her as being in Mill Bay, according to their search feature. I guess BCF is allowing her new owners to take a little bit of time to prepare for her longest journey to date. They probably are loading gear and whatever they need for her new endeavor. We'll see what Tuesday brings us as far as any movements. Like the saying goes: A ship doesn't weigh anchor or cast off until she, her cargo (live or in package form), and her crew are ready.

The MV Mill Bay departed the terminal at Mill Bay yesterday afternoon. Her AIS transponder was taken off prior to her handover to her new owners and it likely has been put into storage on the terminal without it being turned off. Housekeeping Note:Because the MV Mill Bay has now been retired, this topic will now be used for the Klitsa only. Please direct all further discussion regarding the MV Mill Bay to the MV Mill Bay - Photos & Discussion thread, located in our "In Their Wake - BC's Historic Ships" board. Staff may decide to move some posts that are MV Mill Bay specific to the above board over the coming days.

Alright... Can I officially start a campaign to sink the Klitsa, now? Why? From the accounts you and Mr Horn gave us, there doesn't seem to have been any great outpouring of grief from the community or any great rush of people wanting to get in one last ride on the Mill Bay. Klitsa carries more cars, and while her 'lounge' isn't big or luxurious, it's a step up literally and figuratively from that little dungeon on the Mill Bay. There's a covered outdoor area, and apparently people are going to be allowed up top. I think the change in vessels is a definite improvement.

From what the master on the Mill Bay was saying, I think it's going to be a great improvement. Not only are they making the upper deck accessible, BCF is installing sound insulating material in the engine rooms and a new exhaust system to quiet her down a bit. This indicates a genuine effort to tailor to the tourist side of this route. I'm looking forward to a ride on her!

This indicates a genuine effort to tailor to the tourist side of this route. I'm looking forward to a ride on her! Still another thing to take into account is that route 12 has the second highest vehicle capacity utilization in the entire system- only a smidgen behind route 1, and far ahead of third place route 2. At 74% usage, the Mill Bay was clearly too small, and traffic growth was undoubtedly discouraged by frequent overloads. The docks were also not able to take anything other than the Mill Bay. Now, if the province commits to maintaining route 12, the opportunity will be there to move to an even larger vessel, perhaps the Kahloke, if Denman gets its cable ferry and Quinitsa moves to Hornby. Aside from its sentimental value and unquestionably fantastic fuel economy, time really had passed the Mill Bay by on its present route.

Alright... Can I officially start a campaign to sink the Klitsa, now? Why? Just because it has such a hard to recognize name (Unless you pronounce it with an Afrikaans accent ). And... just because it`s replacing the Mill Bay: That`s ample justification.

Just because it has such an embarrassing name (Unless you pronounce it with an Afrikaans accent ). I've never thought the name was embarrassing. It's named for a rather impressive mountain. I can't speak for what your mind is focussed on. And Ernie, now that the Mill Bay is gone, how about adopting a new moniker? I don't think the Mill Bay is really any more 'legendary' than those White Spot goo-burgers. How about 'I-Sky Guy'? Be good therapy for you as you try to ease into an appreciation for modern ship design.

My response to that is to bribe one of the mods to change your name. If I ever see the Island Sky in this life, it will be too soon. Guarantee it will make me snap completely, and then no amount of ferry therapy would help me , and then you'd have to explain to Jordan why there would be no one to ever host his talk show again.
