How about this: Talequah: Chetzemoka Vashon: Issaquah, K i t s a p, Elwha (It's too big most of the time, but when the Seahawks are in town, I have had multiple boat waits.) Bremerton: Walla walla, Olympic 2 Bainbridge: Wenatchee, Tacoma Edmonds: Puallup, Spokane Clinton: Olympics 1&3 Townsand: Kennewick, Sailish Anacortes: Olympic 4, Yakima, Hyak or Kalletain Interisland: Sealth International: Chelan Retired: Evergreen State, Klahowya, Tillikum, Hiyu Standby: Kittitas, Cathlamet, Hyak or Kalletain Same standerds apply as last post.

Here is my fantasy list for vessel assignments: Talequah= Chetzy F-V-S= Izzy, Kitty, Cathy Bremerton= Wally, Oly 4 B-Bridge= Tacoma, Wenatchee Mukilteo= Oly 1, 3 Kingston= Spokane, Puyallup Ana-Sidney= Chelan and/or Elwha (as needed) Ana-San Juans= Yakima, Kaleetan, Hyak, Oly 2 S-J Inter-Island= Sealth PT/ Townsend= Salish, Kenny Ready reserve= Kitsap Retired= E-State, Klahowya, Tilly and Hiyu. I am hopeful that the Tilly and the Klahowya hang around as part of a reserve fleet for a while but this has not been a pattern with WSF for many years. Maybe it should be. We all know that the Supers are not much newer than the Evergreen Class so maybe swapping out boats on a regular basis while others are in for repairs/maintenance might make actual vessel maintenance costs go down. Also, routes would not have to go to 1 boat or no boat service. Alas, just a pipe dream.

Interesting, but quite complicated. what do you other ferrynuts think? Kahloke? Barnacle? FerrynutSeattle? Honestly, long-term vessel placement isn't something I give a lot of thought. Too many variables and a lot of the time I'm just trying to get the boats we already have through the day.

Interesting, though I do not think you would ever see 4 vessels doing San Juan - Mainland service. You would have a total of 5 boats needing to be tied up at a terminal only built to tie up a maximum of 4 boats. And I do not see WSF investing Hundreds of thousands to build a new slip. Although I guess boat 4 could tie-up in Friday Harbors main slip then take her first trip to the mainland early. Anyway...

Friday, August 10, 2012 I went by Nichols to see their progress on the upper works of the new "Olympic (mountains)" - Class ferry. I was blown away on how big this is. They have made great progress. It's going to be fun to see this taken off their yard and sent to Seattle for mating to the hull. I have three photos to share: It looks like the new ferries will be like BCF's Spaulding C-Class and have four MES stations (one at each corner on the Saloon Deck). I also like the enhanced ADA feature with an elevator at each end and a clear swath for wheelchairs to the bows.

If we are truly lucky they'll stop at the upper wings, too. The elevators on the Issaquah-class can be excused for this oversight (the elevators were there first) but the Elwha cannot.

The plans do indicate elevator entries on the upper car deck wings. :-) Pages 6 and 7 of the general arrangement plans. Looks like the new boats have elevator access to all decks, including the Sundeck.

Here is what WSF is going to do for vessel placement for the summers of 2013-2025. Sidney:Elwha San Jauns Island: Kaleetan, Yakima, Olympic Class #2 San Juan Inter-Island: Sealth Keystone: Kenniwick, Salish Mikilteo: Olympic Class #1, Kittittas Edmonds:Puyallup, Spokane Bainbridge: Tocoma,Wanatchee Bremerton: Walla Walla, Kitsap F-V-S: Issaquah, Tillikum, Cathlamet Point Defiance:Chetzemoke Standby:Klahowya Maintence reserves:Hyak, Chelan Retired: Everygreen state, Hiyu Kaleetan, Hyak, chelan, Klahowya, Tillikum, I just guess where WSF go because WSF just showed their car capacity. Cathlamet , Kittittas one could switch routes to F-V-S and one can stay on her current route. This is going to start next summer (2013) or summer of 2014. P.S: From WSDOT ferries long term plan, Vessel placement. I will do this again in Fall for the fall, winter, spring.

And, furthermore, the long range plan does not name specific vessels for each route. It does list vessel size, and from that, you can extrapolate at least some of the specific ships on a given route, but we won't know what they are going to do until they actually do it.

I so want to see one of those when they put the superstructure on the hull.

Some new information regarding the construction of the new 144's, from a presentation on Thursday to the Washington Legislature Transportation Committee and BC Ferries. Essentially, Procurement #1 is going to include 3 vessels to replace Evergreen, Klahowya, and Tillikum, the entire Evergreen State Class. Given the age of those vessels, this makes sense. Procurement #2 will follow in the next decade to replace 3 of the Super Class vessels. Here is what the timeline looks like: 2014 - Olympic Class #1 - replaces Evergreen State 2014 - Olympic Class #2 - replaces Klahowya 2015 - Olympic Class #3 - replaces Tillikum (this may slip to 2016 if WSF pursues LNG for the 3rd vessel) 2026 - Olympic Class #4 - replaces Elwha 2027 - Olympic Class #5 - replaces Kaleetan 2028 - Olympic Class #6 - replaces Yakima Here's a link to the presentation: www.wsdot.wa.gov/NR/rdonlyres/FF048EFB-0B5E-421F-A54E-9DD5CFE39085/0/WSFPresentationOlympicClassFerries_083012.pdf

I was reading the comments on Flickr and one said BC ferries have better interiors than WSF. I was wounding why doesn't WSF put workstation and kids play area on the new vessel excluding the two vessels on the Mukilteo/Clinton route?

I was reading the comments on Flickr and one said BC ferries have better interiors than WSF. I was wounding why doesn't WSF put workstation and kids play area on the new vessel excluding the two vessels on the Mukilteo/Clinton route? Nice idea. Our crossings are a bit shorter than the regular mainline runs in BC. By the time the kids start playing, the crossing is over. It may be a different story in the San Juans. I won't tell you what the crews of the KENNEWICK and SALISH have done for the passengers. I'll let you find this out for yourself. It's something very creative, though. Good to mention computer workstations. Nice feature to have. I guess seating is more important aboard these ferries. Oh, yes! The Columbia Beach run is short. Back in the old days, when you ordered a hot dog aboard the RHODY, it'll be ready just in time to go to your car. Made the old fashioned way and on a grill.
Meanwhile, the first of the Olympic (Mountains) - Class ferries is progressing well. WSF has added nine photos to their collection this last week while Nichols' photo tally has grown to 53. www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157627905126905/www.nicholsboats.com/car-ferries-144-car-wa-ferry.html

WSF's newer boats have "clean power" (the voltage is highly regulated) for places to plug in your laptop or whatever device. The older boats barely have enough plug-ins for the vending machines and floor burnishers. ;D

By the way, is the first Olympic Class head of schedule for being build? When is WSF going to start the first Olympic Class sea trails?

Given WSF's ongoing rigid adherence to the same basic vessel design, chances are the Elwha of 2026 will look very similar to the Elwha of 1967.

Looks like WSF is doing a naming contest for the first two of Olympic Class vessels so get your names in by Sept.26th. So, it's looks like the Olympic Class the first two vessel will have names by the end of October.

My choice for the first two (named after Olympic Peninsula communities): MV QUILLAYUTE MV QUILCENE Named also from two important earlier ferries on Puget Sound. One of them went to BC and did the baby steps of the service you see today.
