Does anyone know why the Renaissance is substituting for the Inspiration today? The Inspiration is sitting at the tie-up berth in Departure Bay. I believe Inspiration is supposed to be on or going into refit starting today. Yep, and the CR is back on route 2 on June 23rd. Normally she'd be back in time for the May long weekend, but not this year.

I tweeted @bcferries about the matter, and they claimed it had to do with the return of the Celebration - but that doesn't make sense, as the Celebration isn't the cause of bumping the Inspiration off Route 30...

Haha. I think it has more to do with the CR's extended presence as the #2 boat out of Tsawwassen on route 1.

Last year the CR didn't start route 2 until it was gradually phased in beginning in June on Fridays and Sundays. It was about mid-June when it took over as #1. The Inspiration's refit wasn't able to start this year until the Celebration returned to service, so the CR could go from relief at Swartz Bay to relief at Duke Point.

Coastal Inspiration sitting @ berth 1, Departure Bay - 10 May 2013. This was day 1 of her annual refit. It was to have been my day for a first trip aboard her, the one Coastal class vessel that I have not yet been on. Oh well, better luck next year. photo © WCK-JST by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Coastal Inspiration is sporting one new SAM S-band radar array on both masts, located above the SAM X-band array...
Other than the Northern Expedition, Northern Adventure, Queen of Chilliwack and now the Coastal Inspiration, no other vessel in the fleet uses S-band. Any ideas if this is the first of many to come?

When is she supposed to return to service? And when is the Renaissance due on route 2?

When is she supposed to return to service? And when is the Renaissance due on route 2? The Inspiration will return to service in time for summer schedule changeover on June 26th. This should put the Renaissance back on Route 2 in time for the Canada Day long weekend.

If your dates are right that will mean that this vessel will have been out of service for for a month and a half. What have they been doing to require that much time?

Just an idea, but 2013 is 5 years from the original build date in 2008, which means that the first "special" hull and machinery survey after the original build survey is due for Transport Canada and the classification society (ABS I think). While I'm sure BCF does a lot of continuous surveys on machinery to reduce the time required in refit, the 5, 10, 15 etc year refit will always be a bit longer than any other one. It could also be that TC or the classification society has found deficiencies in the survey.

There has been no dry-dock time that I am aware of.

These things are massive, and you can see how much they stand out in this photo. Perhaps BC Ferries is preparing the Inspiration for northern service...?
