Higher railings have now been added to the outside stairwells that connect deck 5 with 7, though it still remains blocked off for emergency use only. I also noticed this upgrade on the Celebration, as well... The midship stairwell between deck 2 through 5 is currently blocked off due to an issue on the deck 4 landing.

Were the Coastals designed to have have Gallery decks added? Yes sir the ships is designed to accomodate them but not fitted. If you have a long weekend with nothing to do, the answer can be found waaaaaay waaaaay back in the Coastal Renaissance thread and Herr Brinkmann confirmed/or provided the answer.

Were the Coastals designed to have have Gallery decks added? The fact that the ships are missing a "Deck 3" should provide a subtle answer to your question.

Here's two videos found on youtube, that were uploaded recently. This was obviously on the upper car deck, and she is battling the waves on a stormy route 30 crossing. I'm a little amazed about the amount of water accumulating on the deck, especially knowing how high up that deck is. I think I'd be taking my car to the car wash immediately upon arriving at the terminal after that sailing!!

A couple of shots taken from the Nanaimo cemetery, today. - looking like an historical photo of a BCCS Steamship arriving at Nanaimo. (ship is promoting the upcoming 1924 Winter Games at Chamonix). - I like being able to see over Protection Island.

This was my idea: 30 should have a new coastal built custom. Basically the same coastals we have now, minus deck 6. Less weight, less wind drag, more fuel efficient and same vehicle capacity. I was just thinking about this: Wouldn't it be a little bit annoying only having a Coast Cafe Express on this ferry? It would be serving the longest of the mainland-Island connections... the cafeteria would have to be relocated to deck 5, leaving very little room for seating. This would mean an entire redesign of it's only passenger deck. So I ask: Why don't we just steal the Queen of Cowichan for this route? We could put the Inspiration on route 2, replacing the Cowichan, also lessening waits in Horseshoe Bay, and adding more seats to route two. It would fix the capacity issues on both those routes, and BCF wouldn't even have to bother buying a new ship, and they get another almost-new ship on their flagship mainland-Island route. Everything works out. So again I ask: Why didn't they do this a long time ago??

A Coastal's main car deck carries more trucks than the Cowichan's main car deck can. And the possibility of removing the Cowichan's side gallery-decks has been discussed and rejected before.

I am also opposed to the CI's use on Route 30, but for now, it is likely that the current vessel deployment will not change unless they decide to move the New West back to Route 30 (overheight capacity will decrease no matter what vessel they choose though). Otherwise, all the other options will cost plenty of $$$ on BCFS' part. Almost too bad they didn't foresee this. Route 30 could have a third vessel by now if they did (they'd have nowhere to park it though...)

Well why dosent BC Ferries just move the Inspiration to route 1 instead of the Renaissance then they can get some use out of deck 5??? Unless they dont want deck 5 on the Inspiration to ever be used which is a waste! Is the Renaissance going to be on the only Coastal that gets moved around???

Route 30 could have a third vessel by now if they did (they'd have nowhere to park it though...) when you say that, you mean three vessels at once, of a smaller size, so two V Class and the Alberni? I like that plan... another reason that they should not have retired the Queen of Vancouver. They could have just put the Inspiration on route 1, kept the NEw West on route 30, and put Queen of Vancouver there with her and Alberni. Three boats, more service, happy truck drivers

I think deck 5 would get a new layout... perhaps similar to the C class, cafeteria a little more to the centre and lounge space at each end.

I've thought quite a bit about a Coastal "Lite" type of vessel, with only 1 main passenger deck similar to the C's. I would move the bridges up top, making it kind of like the Jumbo Mark II's with the extended flying bridges. Then Deck 5 would be full passenger space from end to end, and you would get forward lounges. I would then push the middle section of Deck 5 out to the sides of the vessel to increase passenger space on the inside, and make it more feasible to locate the gift shop and cafeteria in that middle area. Of course it would mean losing the full-length covered walkway/outside deck that the Coastals now have, and the rescue boat would have to be relocated to Deck 6, but it would make Deck 5 more usable. I would also make the pickle forks passenger accessible. With the bridge moved up top, it wouldn't be necessary to keep those pickle forks as crew space only. The car decks below could remain the same as they are with the Coastals, in theory. I don't know if such a design is feasible, but it could be a good fit for Route 30, and possibly Route 3 in the future.

It is nice to dream, but it seems apparent that there will be no new major ferries built in the next five (maybe 10) years. BCFS's has taken on a rather substantial debt load and they appear to be having difficulty handling that debt. That means that they must keep older boats in service longer than planned.
As an example they had been panning to replace and retire the Tenaka. Instead, they have had her out of service for a six months plus major refit to allow her to continue in service for another ten years. As far as I can tell, at this point they have no immediate plans for replacing any of the minor vessels some of which have been in service for 45 years.

What about the Mill Bay? Gosh, she's gotta be at least 55, now... Are they planning on getting a new girl for that route? (Let's 'route' for a no! ;D)

Back to the topic at hand. This is a photo thread, so I should probably post the pics I took of CI on her inaugural sailing in June of 2008. Scott, Karl, and I were the only ones to make that one. CI at Duke Point just prior to the inaugural sailing driving aboard CI - incidently, David Hahn was driving on in the car right behind me
