Tsawwassen bound SoBC in mid Georgia Strait with Washington State mainland mountains for a backdrop - 3 July 2011 The rust is back, it seems... From the JST Flickr photo site ©It seems that any ship that ties up in berth 3 or 4 at TSA develops those rust streaks about 3/4 down the ship on the port side. The theory is that it's something to do with the turning dolphins separating berths 3, 4 and 5.

In certain tidal situations, leaving Swartz Bay via Prevost Passage and the south side of Moresby Island can be faster than going the "normal" route around Arbutus Rock. Some captains will choose to go the "inbound" route to make up time.
Not saying it isn't mechanical in this case, but just because a Spirit is exiting via the "inbound" route doesn't necessarily mean it is mechanical.

Yes, I was going to say that it's likely for tidal reasons as in going with the flow.
Sometimes the Coastal Celebration will exit via that route, but hang a hard turn to port around Fircone Point and up Shute Passage, and around Kanaka Bluff (North end of Prevost) to avoid tangling with the Inbound Spirit.
PS: I haven't been paying attention this weekend, but have they been running the Spirits on the even hour again? (Re: Flugels mention of SOBC departing for the 8:00am sailing)

I was on the Celebration's 12pm sailing Friday and we left Swartz Bay the normal route but then she turned port and went that other way that was mentioned which I have never seen them do before. That was different.

SoBC in Georgia Strait with 17:00 sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen - 8 September 2011. She departed Active Pass well astern of the Queen of Nanaimo, which is where this photo was taken from. The SoBC overtook the Nanaimo rather quickly in the race for Tsawwassen, and was running well ahead at the time of this photo. From the JST Flickr photo site ©
