Additional to the above is the River pilot is boarding at 2230 at Sandheads. The ship did suffer some damage during her canal transit, and part of the rubbing streak has been damaged, and temporary pilot ladder torn off.

It is my understanding that there are BC Ferries crew on board the SoBC right now, including some senior officers. So, can anyone tell me why pilots are required? It appears to me that in cases like this the requirement should be waved.

At 03:00 Friday morning SOBC is off Coos Bay Oregon, and I am sure she is capable of arriving much earlier than 18:30 on Saturday. I suspect the agent will advise the vessel to "run slow" once in the calmer waters of Juan de Fuca should the 18:30 order remain in place. It would appear that the "tidal/current window" for the Fraser River is the factor delaying her arrival. Those making the decisions are going to examine the situation on Friday afternoon. Keep an eye on the PPA web site for possible changes.

SOBC is anchored at Constance Bank off the Victoria waterfront. I live in James Bay and work right on the waterfront and this is the first time I have ever seen a BC Ferry use Constance Bank! I am not at work today, but it would appear that she will await her original order time for pilots at Victoria and the Fraser river. The current "window" for the river opens at 23:00 and Smit tugs will assist in berting her. Redwise and the Pilot are leaving nothing to chance in hiring the tugs.

IIRC it was previously mentioned that the pilot order is for 18:30. Does that mean its safe to assume SoBC will be anchored off of Vic until around then (alternative question; what time do we expect her to be moving again?). Trying to figure out how quickly I need to get downtown if I want to catch a glimpse!

I would imagine she will heave the anchor about 17:30 and move over to the boarding station.

The SPIRIT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA received her pilot right on time at 1830PDT and weighed anchor shortly then after.
She's past Turn Point now.
When she arrives at Deas later tonight, her crew won't be able to leave the ship as freely as they would normally do right after making fast to the slip. Can you guess why?
Might be a first for this ship.

Does the crew have to clear customs?

Does the crew have to clear customs? You, most likely, have the right answer.
She'll be passing Tsawwassen shortly.

Most likely CBSA will meet them just upon docking at Deas Dock for ship clearance.

The tugs have done their work and secured the last of the mooring lines. I guess it takes a while to moor a 560-foot ferry in that confined space at Deas. We will timestamp the arrival of the SOBC at 0440PDT this morning.
WELCOME HOME, MV SPIRIT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA!
Now, it's time to get her ready, restock everything, and get started with the crew training. Then, reintroduce her to the riders on the TSA-SWB run.
