Are they really that much louder than the Coastal Classes whistles? If they’re that loud then what was the point of the SOBC getting retrofitted with those whistles? It also makes me wonder why BCFerries didn’t just get the same whistle set as the Coastal Class, and why the different chord? It doesn’t really sound like BCFerries past vessels. This is all very weird, at least for me 🤔 I am very surprised that its a Kahlenberg T4 and not a regular AirChime(Just my opinion, they should have use a horn like the Queen of Nanaimo). If it is a Really nice captain, and you request it going through Active Pass, There is a 95% chance that they will use it. Obviously if there is a moron in the way, then the will stop "mooing", Then give a real blast.(BTW Charels, I like trains too). I think really the only reason is to: A. Not deafen everyone on the outside decks who choose not to cover their ears B. Not wake up the people on Galiano Island at 7:30 in the morning, and not to disturb them throughout the day (they are probably used to it anyways) C. Not wake up anybody on the later sailings. Especially on arrival into Swartz Bay at 8:30. Most of the people on Piers Island are asleep by then and I don't think we (I'm a "Piers Islander") need to be waken up. Hopefully Transport changes their mind.

You don't want to be woken up, but you'd like the ships to be allowed to sound the loud whistle at a late hour.

I was speaking for those on the side that is closest to Swartz Bay. My cabin faces Saltspring so I only see the Spirit, and occasionally the New West. We don’t hear any whistles on our side unless somebody decides to cut in front of the ship. They are not that loud when departing, or arriving but I suspect of the SOBC blasted all the time at SWB there would be some complaints

I’m on the SOBC right now and I’ve noticed two things so far that have changed from my last trip two years ago. The seats now have a cloth front look and the children’s play area seems to just be a small room with a tv playing kids shows...but the WiFi is as unreliable as ever! I have more to come and many photos to post in a couple days.

New look Spirit ...
Spirit of British Columbia easing into berth 5 @ Tsawwassen Terminal with 9 AM sailing from Swartz Bay, Vancouver Island - 6 September 2018
The SoBC is now sporting a new LNG vent mast just aft of its main mast, plus a new light beacon appendage added to the top of the funnel. Her sister, the Spirit of Vancouver Island, will look much the same next spring when she returns from her Polish transformation.

Oh, I didn't know that new second mast mast had another purpose besides holding the horns. I literally thought it was just for that.

This print was part of promotional material made available by the BC Ferry Corporation. The background looks more like the Inside Passage than anywhere on the route actually operated by the SoBC. A fine drawing, nonetheless.

Very fine drawing of the 'SOBC' in her very early days. Both the 'Spirit' vessels are really great looking emissaries of BCFS, BUT: It's about that protruding upper car deck 'lip' that certainly draws down on the otherwise very sleek design.
Does anyone have an update as to how the MLU of the 'SOVI' is progressing? Does the finish time-line appear to be as predicted?

It has been a horrible, no good rotten day on BC Ferries' routes across Georgia Strait, in particular, Route 1. Not only this 'issue' with the SoBC, but an earlier mechanical issue with the Renaissance, & did I mention the wind. Then there was a serious medical incident on the Queen of Alberni (Route 30), and there was an IT (computer glitch) issue affecting ticketing at Horseshoe Bay and/or Departure Bay this morning. The schedules have been pretty much out the window on routes 1, 2, 3, 9 & 30.

I came across this photo on Snapchat today of the Spirit of BC undergoing repairs. Based on the repairs being undertaken, the damage looks somewhat more severe than I had imagined... This is not my photo; I am merely sharing it from the (anonymous) person who posted the clip on Snapchat maps...

The long voyages to Poland and back undertaken by both the 'SOBC' and the 'SOVI' apparently went without major incident for which we thank King Neptune a thousand times over. Seeing the damage to the starboard side of the 'SOBC' being repaired is a small reminder of the possible perils of any voyage and the damages that a vessel may suffer no matter how close or far from home that vessel travels.

The repairs look pretty much complete on the SoBC and the scaffolding has been removed. They also had the engines running yesterday afternoon around 5pm, so perhaps she was taken out for little jaunt about the straight? Regardless, it looks pretty much guranteed (BCF must be very thankful) that BCF will have full service restored for the long weekend!
