Queen of New Westminster arriving at Tsawwassen Berth 4, today.
Now here is what the new horns sound like:
I prefer how it sounded before they replaced the horns, even though it wasn't sounding all 3 of the horns. I hate that new high pitched horn that starts first! And the last sounding was so loud that my ears still hurt hours afterwards!
Oh good lord.. surely this video is fake, surely! This can't be....

Oh good lord.. surely this video is fake, surely! This can't be.... It's definitely real, they ruined it! YIKES, I feel sorry that you had to listen to that monstrosity. I actually FELT that jumpscare in the very first clip hahaha, and that last clip gives me a headache just listening to it on the computer. I would say the ONLY clip it sounds half-decent is 0:57, but that's probably just because of where you were on the ship when you recorded it. Thanks for the great quality clips though, appreciate your quick service!

Ahh it sounded so gentle before.. Honesty it sounds like the Coastal Inspiration's horn on steroids. I think the highest note makes it sound not so nice, I wonder if they will continue to tune it, and/or if it will slowly start sounding better over time?

I hope they get better over time or at least put the old ones back on. I doubt they will change anything though because they just put in all that effort to install these new ones.

True, knowing BC Ferries they would probably just change it to single-tone before anything at this point.. Happy to hear 3 tones at least.

I wonder if the original unit was unable to be separated or something odd, it’s weird they replaced all of them. Also now I wonder what they’re using to sound them individually? It doesn’t sound like a pullcord just because of how perfectly they sound every time, it’s not gradual it’s just off and on. Also why are they unable to produce a whistle that sounds a major chord anymore?
Did you notice anything different from her refit inside? I find it weird that they didn’t paint the railing in front of the bridge, very odd…

There is a new "Queen of New Westminster Welcome Aboard" sign printed on the forward exterior by the foot passenger entrance. There are also some stickers on a lot of the windows.
The pull cord is still there going into the funnel, so I think they are still using it.

I was wondering about that. Good to see they are still using it.

I compared the sound of the new horns to Kahlenberg's website and the first horn to start sounds just like the KM250. I think they must have bought new horns from Kahlenberg, they are the same grey colour as well (they didn't paint them black). Probably a KM250 + KM165 + KM135 if they bought the horns new because those are the only horns available on Kahlenberg's website.

You can still order KM 200’s, a 135 would be too low of a frequency, I doubt it is one.

On the website it isn’t listed but it is still a purchasable product! I called one of their reps years ago when I first got obsessed and they are still very much able to be ordered. I think like some other members on the forum have said, BCFerries probably has no personnel who know how to tune a whistle, who knows if they’re even able to anymore, it’s a similar product to the old Airchimes but Kahlenberg might not even make them with that ability anymore.
I think it’s just down to however they’re cast, if they’re cast slightly longer then they’ll sound as they do. It is weird however how the Inspiration’s shifted, not as drastic as the New West’s old Airchimes but obviously the diaphragm alters and ages and that changes its tune. With different diaphragms maybe they’d sound an E Major or an Eb Major, but from the factory it seems like they’re tuned to a E Dim.
I think with a KM 135 they’d sound very different. Watch this video for how a 135 sounds

They removed that carpeted box! If I'm not mistaken, that carpet covered box was where the window covers were stored....

* * * hahahaha.... i was referring to what wettcoast said, but i guess what ollie and ferryfanyvr noticed could also be correct. did the nw have that carpeted kids bench?
im also expecting charlie not to come. i sense its kinda illegal with all the wokeness over everything being outdated colonial vestiges.

Some close up photos of the New Westminster's new horns, from today. If you look closely you can see they say Kahlenberg on the side.

Nice recordings! Looks like the weather was great today! The horn doesn't sound too bad with the button press, but it would be nice if the high note didn't last longer than the other notes like the Coastal Inspiration. We now have the Queen of Inspiration.
