I think you are talking about the Burnaby ,which has its Mast and funnel painted No, it's Nanaimo that now has it funnel painted to appear entirely blue and is in service berth 2 or 3. Burnaby is tied up off to the side. All flags were also removed from the mast. "BC Ferries" is still painted on the starboard side so not all marking have been removed. 20170823_131837 by A C, on Flickr 20170823_131932 by A C, on Flickr

The next major milestone is the painting of the Main Deck superstructure black with blue trim and lettered with the company and ship's new name. Could BCF be donating the mast of the BURNABY to some sort of group? I imagine one of my Forum mates would love to have this on his/her's front lawn with the "Dogwood Flag" displayed!

Further to the Fiji Sun's report of the impending sale and delivery voyage for the 'Nanny, the 'deal' appears to have been done. Interesting photo showing the two retired vessels with their funnels now de-slugged. Noticed the height difference between the two funnels. Wondering if there was a decommissioning ceremony for the 'Nanny'? For those of us who were planning to do the 'one last trip' on the 'Nanny' alas, have been reminded once again of the old saying: 'You snooze, you lose".

I was indeed one of those that was planning on sailing the Queen of Nanaimo one last time... so I did snooze, and I lost.. But the crazy ferry nerd in me has me thinking - perhaps a trip to Fiji is in order in the next couple of years? If it were only one ex-BC Ferry I most likely wouldn't bother, but considering there are 3 ex-BC Ferries being operated by the same company, it may just be worthwhile. Has anyone else had similar musings? I really do want to say a proper goodbye to the Nanaimo still

Has anyone else had similar musings? I really do want to say a proper goodbye to the Nanaimo still You pose an interesting question Queen of Nanaimo Teen. "Musings" are often synonymous with ones' yearning for "time-warping" back to specific times, events or experiences, hoping to exhume them from our "best of times" memory vault. You state that if there was only one ex-BC Ferry on the other side of the world, it's not likely that a trip would be worthwhile. What do you mean by worthwhile as the 'worthiness' factor is now threefold? IF, your 'worthiness' factor centers only on the novelty of seeing three old B.C. Ferries, plying their duties far from home, that will be a 'here and now" experience and may fulfill your 'worthiness' criteria. Conversely, IF you are intent on exhuming the Queen of Prince Rupert, Queen of Chilliwack' and the Queen of Nanaimo from your "best of times" memory vault you may wish you had re-defined your 'worthiness' factor for considering a Fiji adventure. Keep your memories of the Rupert, and the W ack close to your heart. Go to FMU for the send-off of the Nanny. She won't look the same as the last time you saw her or rode on her. If you go aboard, find a quiet corner somewhere to say your proper good-bye, hell, shed a tear if you want. That will suffice. After she departs, walk away, don't look back, just keep all those "best of times" memories locked in that vault. There are countless occasions when I wish I'd followed the same advice I've shared with you. Unlocking, or should I confess, blowing the doors off the "best of times" memory vault by doing one of the Rupert's final runs, then attending the old girl's send off party was traumatic, but thankfully survivable. Nonetheless, there is truth to resisting the temptation to unlock that damn vault.

Good luck to Lomaiviti Princess V. May she have a smooth sailing across the Pacific, and a successful career with Goundar's company.

As it appears they are working from the hull upwards, wonder if the BCFS blue stripe at the top of the hull is going to remain or get painted out. Looks quite good with the 2 tone blue. The white super structure looks a bit refreshed but it may just be the way the picture was taken. Still the funnel to go? Heaven forbid if we see any 'painting' going on over at the wall-slip occupied by the Burnaby. I echo Kahloke's well wishes for a safe voyage to her new home in the sun and much fair sailing when she takes up her new assignment.

Goundar has this colour on his other ships as well.

No camera with me, but I noticed today that the hull hasn't yet been blackened all the way to the bow on the port side; you can still see 'Queen'. Poignant.

"Ferryman" posted on the "Goundar Shipping Ltd" thread under "North America and Abroad" that the NANAIMO will be going into drydock before setting out for the Juan De Fuca Strait and the Pacific Ocean. Get your cameras ready!
As for the timing of moving this ship's thread over to the historic side, would it make sense to wait until her blip changes to the new name on ship trackers? We'll let the moderators have their call on this one.

Will certainly miss this ol'girl! Many fond memories. Was on her weekly for the last 14 years. And every summer for the 25 years before that. Paid my respects with her today.

In your regular riding, what were some of your favourite spots on the ship, inside and outside? And was Active Pass always a special place, for the close-confines beauty?

In your regular riding, what were some of your favourite spots on the ship, inside and outside? And was Active Pass always a special place, for the close-confines beauty? As a normal passenger on the inside always enjoyed sitting in the forward lounge on the promenade deck - Great view! Also enjoyed visiting the car deck in the days of the stern door on the car deck were left open across the strait. On the outside decks always enjoyed the bow area on the promenade deck when in berth on one of the many stops on the milk run to Salt Spring. Especially enjoyed being out on the Sundeck just ahead of the midship doors by the air whistles. A sound like no other when they go off! Other areas of the ship that I've had the privilege of viewing and enjoyed are the engine room, and the ship's funnel - what a hot environment! Active Pass certainly is the highlight on Rte 9 to and from the Gulf Islands. The closeness to the shore and the echoing effect of the ship's whistles off the hillsides when sounded. Also the activity of other marine traffic.

I just happened on coincidence to have traveled to Vancouver the night before her last sailing under the BC Ferries flag - the trip between Tsawwassen and FMU in Richmond. Here's a photo of her sailing upstream. Queen of Nanaimo - Richmond, BC by Michael Coulson, on Flickr

Considering creating a website for the Queen of Nanaimo as a tribute and reference spot for everything about her. (history, photos, video, sound files, etc...) www.queenofnanaimo.com/If others feel this is an worthwhile endeavor, I would welcome others to contribute: photos, video, sound files, and stories of this ol girl. Would certainly reference and credit anyone who does submit such contributions. I'm a new member to this forum, but a long time fan of the Nanaimo. From what I've seen on here thus far, there is some great talent. Please provide your thoughts on this. If you would like to contribute any media to this, please pm me. -Ryan Preddy

This should have been posted here as well, because it's not an exclusive event.
The marine history facebook page reports that a decommissioning ceremony will be held for the Queen of Nanaimo at Deas, from 3-5pm on September 12th. The public is welcome to attend.

Sporting new livery... This picture has been circulating among the crew today. The photo is not my own but from an Engineer who has been working on the ship at Deas If anyone has direct contacts with Deas, I would suggest returning the rounded blue stripe to the bow of the NANAIMO (soon to be LP5). Thumbnail image from Gordon E McCall (Facebook) and a pic from the web. I would reroute the blue stripe at the bow to near its original round. Use black or blue paint to fill in the upper part of the blue and white area. This would make this ship look nice again at the bow, unless Mr Goundar plans to install a bow ramp as well as a stern ramp for his company's landings.

It is kind of funny you say that because I'd noticed over the last few months of service that the paint on the doors had chipped down to the old baby blue stripe in places. Made me wonder how intact that old paint job is and exactly how long ago it was painted over (for '86 I imagine).

Great 'find' Neil as I've never gone into the marine history facebook page. There's nada on the BCFS website. If the ceremony is open to the 'public', does BCFS expect everyone to be on that particular facebook page? I'm making plans to attend this decommissioning ceremony seeing as I missed out on doing a last trip on the old girl before she went bummers.

I'm thinking that maybe the mention of the ' Burnaby was just a mistake. www.flickr.com/gp/146484140@N05/SF79X2

Just as an F.Y.I. item, anyone planning to attend the 'Nanny's' decommissioning ceremony at Deas/FMU are in for a 'double-header' as BCFS announced yesterday that the 'Spirit of B.C.' will depart from Deas/FMU on Tuesday, Sept.12th for its 42 day journey to Poland. No specific departure time listed for the 'S.O.B.C.' but departures usually end of being later in the day than earlier. B.T.W., quite the extensive list of mechanical/systems upgrades over and above the LNG conversion.
