This view is of the Queen of Nanaimo taken off of Bowen Island while she was en route from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo. The date - 28 August 1974. The Nanaimo was then serving her namesake city on the route for which she was built. I took this photo from one of her sisters - the Queen of New Westminster. © WCK-JST aka WettCoast |

I was talking to an old BCFerries employee who worked the Horseshoe Bay and Langdale runs back in the 70s while the ships were being stretched. He said they used to run the ships across the straight even during gale force conditions with seas up 9-10 feet or more. Apparently they used to run the ferries around the backside of Bowen Island during rough weather so they would have a more sheltered run, and then could just make a quick, straight shot into Departure Bay. |

I am continuing to scan more negatives from my brother's collection. Tonight I have a couple of pictures of the Queen of Nanaimo which date from about 1980, and appear to be taken in the SGI, presumably while working on route 9. The following 9 pics were taken on the Queen of Nanaimo on May 3rd, 1990 when I was travelling from Tsawwassen to Pender Island. Queen of Nanaimo arriving at Tsawwassen terminal:  mid-ship lounge:  forward lounge:  aft lounge, snack bar:  I love the wooden tops on the half walls in the 7 sisters' cafeterias. Each ship had a different pattern. I only have photos showing the Nanaimo, Vancouver, and Esquimalt. I wish I could remember what the other 4 looked like.  upper lounge, looking aft:  a depiction of Nanaimo's historic Bastion. I was very disappointed when it was removed/covered up during the Nanaimo's coastalization. Each of the 7 sisters had a different feature wall at the back of the upper lounge.  sundeck looking aft:  the vessel in dock at Otter Bay, Pender Island:  |

These are all scanned from prints..I have no idea how to scan from an original negative, but it doesn't really matter because the negatives disappeared a long time ago.

from Queen of Nanaimo, on Route9, on Aug.17, 2006. Photo taken from end of gallery/platform deck, at stern end. This shows the Galiano-bound traffic & Mayne traffic parked in the "circle" so that they can offload by driving down the starboard side towards the bow.  Photo from main car deck, looking towards bow. Car on left is toward-stern, so it will offload at Long Harbour. 2 lanes on right are toward-bow, so they will offload at Galiano, Mayne or Pender.  |
