These recent scrappings of the ships we know are making me old. I was born before the departed VANCOUVER, ESQUIMALT, SAANICH, NANAIMO, and TAKU were launched and after the VICTORIA. On the other hand, this pic is as close to what you've seen when her stern was cut away when she got her new 84-foot midsection installed which resulted in a 426-foot overall length from 342.
But now, the bow and most of the midsection are gone. The NANAIMO was the last of the Seven Sisters to have an open-air Solarium. The two remaining in this class, the retired BURNABY and operating NEW WESTMINSTER have theirs' fully enclosed.

In comparison to her career and the careers of the seven sisters I only spent a short time on her but it still saddens me to see her demise as she was my first BC Ferry as an employee. The Nanaimo had just over another six years to go before her retirement career in Fiji began. She has since met her end on the beach at Alang, India, the same place that her sister, the Victoria, met her end.

Ah the signature Queen of Nanaimo horns. I heard they were sold to someone in the gulf islands, does anyone know the full story behind that? It would be cool to hear those horns again one day. I wish they were put on one of the Spirit ships as the "backup" horns, as well as the Queen of Vancouver's horns. I know there was noise complaints so they use the quiet single-tone horns but at the very least they would have been cool as the backup horns. |

 Hi folks -You haven't heard from me for quite some time, but I was once very active on the forum. I have many good memories of trips with other members of the ferry forum, and am incredibly thankful how many of the old ships I got to ride countless times. I am currently teaching high school band in rural Manitoba, a dream job for me! I miss riding the ferries dearly, but I have several reminders around me that bring me joy.This past weekend I got a tattoo, in honour of my favourite BC Ferry, the Queen of Nanaimo. |

Looks to me like Manitoba has maybe four ferry routes... so you're not entirely landlocked. Glad to hear from one of our long time, long lost members. Engine room is next ... I recognized the ship in the background... It was the Star Pisces, which I first saw as the MS Kalypso of Scandinavia's Viking Line. I saw the ship in the summer of 1990... the night before we cruised from Turku Finland to Stockholm Sweden about the MS Amorella. The Star Pisces/Kalypso was about 33 years old when it was dismantled. |
