From this afternoon, Oct, 8th, 2011: The Queen of Nanaimo's cardeck almost full on a direct sailing from Tsawwassen to Long Harbour, SSI. About 120 vehicles stowed away. Only 170 went to Galiano and Mayne a few hours prior. These direct to Salt Spring sailings aren't usually this full. Usually maybe a lane or two full on both Port and Starboard sides. But this what is called a "Block Load" with all lanes being utilized.

Monsieur Le V-C,
Not your fault, but the folks at the BC Archives should be ashamed! The Q Nanaimo is pictured only in the first photo. All the rest are of V-class vessels. The visible funnels are dead giveaways...

All the Victoria class ships had a photo display of the stretching process in the 1970s and these were the photos. The poster first appeared around 1970, so the ship being modified must be the Esquimalt or Victoria.

Crewing out of Horseshoe Bay on August 3, 1964 on the 4 year-old Queen of Nanaimo was like winning a brand new car after toiling on the hack-job of the beautiful Chinook II, which became the Sechelt Queen. ;D

:)unfortunately everthing ages and starsteward is rite in saying the Sechelt Queen was quite a mess in her later years, when new as Black Ball's spiffy new Chinook, had the new car feel as well! that being said I remember stepping abord her when I was working the spare board, and thinking what awful condition she was in, so this is the getting old conundrum, and our last trip on the Burnaby, I saw a very shabby vessel! ???mrdot.

One of these weeks I'm going to take advantage of the free Mon-Thurs.Senior's passes and get out and do a trip on both the 'Nanaimo' and the 'Burnaby' before they're turned out to pasture. Not having been 'raised' these two old girls still maintain that good looking sleek profile, especially always liked the shape of the bridge with the curved windows and the visor - like cover that extended across the entire bridge structure. AND....get the pale pastel blue back on the ships, it was so classy.

Here are some recent photos of the Nanaimo. The Upper lounge that's hardly used. It's opened when the ship is running on a minimum of a 'B' License. This means for most of the summer, especially weekends. Otherwise just holiday weekends in the winter on the peak travel days. This used to be a wooden mural scene of Nanaimo Harbour, featuring a view looking at the Bastion tower. It was ripped out when she was Coastalized in 2005, and now features some generic Coastal photos. It was only in recent months that the spot lights were turned back on to shine at thie particular area. The lights are all that remains from when the mural existed. Here's a look at what used to be the upper galley for the upper lounge restaurant. Today, it's just a dry stores area. This room was completely refurnbished with fresh paint last year. You can also see some familiar re-upholstered chairs in storage here.

Guess who officially got to test out the new Berth 4 at Tsawwassen this morning. It's a hassle to do it, but it is possible. Actually there was an unofficial use of this berth not too long ago, but it wasn't a planned test fit to note any flaws for using this ship there. So next time someone says, "Oh, the Queen of Nanaimo is way too small to fit in Berth 4...", tell them their wrong because she does fit. There are just a few things to take into account in advance. Here she is making her first official approach. In order to the overhead walkway to be used, the ship must layup against the Port side leads. Also the flagstaff must be lowered to avoid coming into contact with the Apron on the upper ramp. This is a feature the Queen of Burnaby doesn't have, since her flagstaff is still original and doesn't fold down. So hopefully this is thought of in the future, but I doubt it. Here's another look at the Berth. Beautiful morning out there today.

The Queen of Nanaimo got to test fit the newly renovated Berth 5 at Tsawwassen this morning. Everything went as planned, and overall Berth 5 works better than Berth 4. Go figure. The saying applies, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. Here it is: Bonus picture: Queen of New Westminster arriving in Berth 3

What makes berth 5 different from berth 4 in terms of not needing to lower the flagmast in berth 5, yet actually having to in berth 4?

What makes berth 5 different from berth 4 in terms of not needing to lower the flagmast in berth 5, yet actually having to in berth 4? And as far as I know, the flagmast doesn't have to be lowered in berth 3 either....I guess the berth 4 upper ramp apron is in a different position than the others when not in use?
