A 48 year old time capsule of paint on the bulkhead of the main car deck on the Queen of Nanaimo. One of the original steel Fire Extinguisher boxes rusted out to the point where it was beginning to fall apart. It was replaced with a plastic one.

:)the posted pic. of the aft. mooring flat and the tro of visual ports, bring back a flood of memories of my ferry career in the later years of the 1960's. My days of duty on these car decks, featured many times when I would have vued very much this same view, and this over 40 years ago! :)mrdot.

Whales and the Burnaby wish they would have swam faster as i could have got the SOVI and the Burnaby as a backdrop To be the Queen of Burnaby at Sturdies Bay, this photo would have to been taken between October and December 2010. And based on the lack of visible rust, that is not the Burnaby during October-December 2010. It's the Queen of Nanaimo. (posted moved to the Nanaimo thread)

That's one of the best Expo scheme photos I've seen yet. Loving it! When was the Coat of Arms moved to where it is there from where it was formerly, above the vehicle deck doors? In this picture post, you can see it's still in place above the vehicle deck doors. That was circa 1983. Was it moved when the Expo paint was added, or at a later date? And also, what was the reasoning behind the coat of arms being moved?

Beauty of a picture indeed! I'm a little surprised that there was black streaking from the bridge windows happening even back then. Almost as if the ship is crying, and her makeup is running ;D This is of course emphasized a little more these days.

Fantastic picture her in the colors I grew up remembering. When did she get the slugs? 2003? When she came back from refit in the spring of 2003. She was one of the first vessels to be so blessed, and the first BC ferry that I personally saw with the new scheme. It was May 12th & I was on my way to Victoria the day after the death of my father. It was a sombre occasion and the slug paint scheme heightened my feeling of melancholy. I know that this is also true for my brother David (Mr. DOT) with whom I was travelling.

Yeah that is a great photo of her. Miss the old expo scheme. I only did ever ride the Nanaimo probably like once or twice before she was upgraded.

:)as for me, I would say the Nanimo was downgraded, as have most of the old vessels of the so called upgraded fleet! mrdot.

Queen of Nanaimo's well-polished bell, gleaming in the sun. Haha, well the perfectionist that I am would say that it's not very well polished there. It hasn't been polished for about a week now ;D But I'm glad you think it's still acceptable at least.

The present condition of the Queen of Nanaimo is the 'personification' of the passage of time from birth to elder-years and many of us have scores of memories during that time span. Whilst the 'Nanny's present condition vividly portrays the passing and ravages of time on cold hard steel, hopefully we humans age much more gracefully

Post Long Weekend traffic this afternoon on Route 9 heading back to the Mainland. Totaling 173 Underheights, 2 Commercials, and two trucks that were towing awkwardly wide trailers. There was space left for a maybe another 5 Underheights, but that's all part of Multi Port Loading, and not always knowing exactly what's waiting for you until you arrive at each port. As it was, the Ramp Deck was full at Long Harbour. Some folks comfort zones for tight spaces had to be compromised, but they managed, and everyone wanting to get on by the time we got to Galiano managed to make it on. Also, part of Multi Port Loading, and having to turn traffic around at the stern, can make for a heavy list. Here's how she looked rounding Mary-Anne Point in Active Pass, before being able to be leveled out by Galiano traffic

From a 1969 publication by the Vancouver Real Estate Board, “Through Lions Gate.” General photographs credit in the book is to Ted Czolowski. I purchased the book for $3 at a local Rotary Club book sale, just for the interesting “back in the day” photos. I've seen a cropped-version on page-1 of this thread. Here's a larger version.

When was the Coat of Arms moved to where it is there from where it was formerly, above the vehicle deck doors? The coats of arms were moved first, I believe, on the V-class sisters at the time of lifting, for obvious reasons. I would assume they moved them higher on the B's not long after, to keep some uniformity in the fleet. I liked them down lower; it gave the ferry a 'classy' look. I understand that they had to be moved on the lifted vessels. Further to this, the QPR's was originally at the top of the bow, but was ripped off in a storm (Mr. DOT may recall some details). And speaking of my brother, here is another of his Nanny pics at Tsawwassen, summer 2002, with less than a year till she lost her dogwood livery. Queen of Nanaimo arriving at Tsawwassen Terminal - summer 2002 [photo © Mr. DOT] by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size] Late edit - Looking through my photos of the B class vessels - in 1983 the CoA's were down low. By 1990, on the Nanaimo at least, it had been raised. It seems today that the New West lacks a CoA's all together. What is with that?
