I'm very happy with this set of "Burnaby from the Beach" photos. - My spot on the beach ended up being a great sight line for her turn-around. - this set from 6:38am on August 25, 2012. Awaiting my command. The shady side of the 'Burnaby I like how you can see the sunshine through the port-side windows in the forward lounge.

Queen of Burnaby at sunrise on August 25, 2012. - she's made her turn and is headed for Powell River. - I'll finish the set tomorrow, with shots of her heading across the strait. I'm pleased with the results of this photo-trip; well worth the drive. ....but the drive was fun too. ;D

From my window here in this Hostel in Powell River, I watched the Queen of Burnaby come in and depart. There was a good handful of cars coming off the ship, but only 3 cars loaded for Comox. For a 192 capacity vessel, I felt awfully bad..

I really like those first 2 shots Mike! Did you get a new camera? Thanks. - No new camera. Same old Canon point-and-shoot, using its sunset-mode, and a tripod. But I am starting to warm-up to the idea of getting a new camera. But I've still got some stuff to learn and use on my current camera, so I'm not in a rush to upgrade.

The DBC chutes and life-rafts on the Queen of Burnaby were tested on September 8, 2012, in the evening. - the day's final round-trip was cancelled for this regulatory test. I took the 5:15pm sailing from Powell River to Comox, and after the sailing ended at Comox, I simply drove over to Singing Sands Rd. beach in hopes of watching and photographing the action. They backed-up the ship a bit in the berth to do the tests. Well, I couldn't see any of the starboard side action, but eventually people gathered on the port-side and I knew that something was up. I heard the magic words on the loudspeaker "Deploy Deploy Deploy" and then a splash. - I started shooting photos. Here is my photo essay on the event, meant to be viewed as a series of rapid-fire photos showing the stages of the deployment. First off, the Chute deployment: - The time-lapse between my first & last photo of this set is 9 minutes, but most of the action happens in the first 2 minutes. ======================== The chute door looks ajar... Deploy Deploy Deploy The chute base is fully inflated now. Up to this point (3 minutes elapsed time), the chutes were fairly vertical. - Then it took 6 more minutes to pull chutes out to a more diagonal angle away from the base of the ship. --------------------- (next up, the dropping of the life-raft canister - see next post)

Nice angle of her backing out of the berth for the test. I like the bottom hull form Series of photos with the changing evening sky (yes the 'Burnaby is in there, somewhere....) Just before I left, to drive home. I'm glad that I had packed my head-lamp.

Great shot's Love the 1st one. Kyle Thanks Kyle. It took me a while, but I'm finally making use of the "rapid fire" mode on my camera, so that I can capture those precise head-on moments of a ship's movement.
