Because of the run it was going on, they never coastalized it completely. Money saving and all that. The damn things too big as it is!

I travelled on the Queen of Burnaby when she was the Princess Margurite 3 leased to Victoria Clipper and since she has been back with BC Ferries the upper decks have not been used. The mid ship upper lounge used to be the Duty Free Shop when she was on the Victoria to Seattle run and I am not sure what was in the upper aft lounge but I think on the Powell River run they dont have enough demand to use the upper deck so it's basically just for crew except the outside upper decks you can still wander around.

Apparently they only spent 3 Million on the Burnaby's Coastalization. Kind of surprising if you consider they spent 13 Mil. on the Nanny...but the Nanny had all her spaces redone.
I'm pretty sure the 2 upper lounges have been that way since she returned to BC Ferries. Fun Fact! In her first weeks of service back with BCF, the Burnaby's Cafeteria wasn't ready for service.
Before 2005, Deck 5 was completely crew only. The outside decks on Deck 5 only became open when BC Ferries replaced deck steel. Before that, the outside decks were considered condemned. Like Karl said, they don't use the lounges because they don't need the extra space on Route 17.
Though if she had to replace a ferry (be it emergency or not) on a route with high passenger volumes, BCFS would be caught with their pants down when it comes to passenger space...and people complain when Deck 5 on the Coastals isn't open. What would happen if Route 2 passengers had to suffer with a full load on the Burnaby with the upper decks not open to passengers?

The lounges were off limits but you could still walk the sundeck as potholed and warped as it was.

Actually, now that I think of it, you're right. When I was down in the deck 4 forward lounge, for the longest time, there was only me and some old hag shouting at someone on her cellphone. The rest of the ferry wasn't much better. The vehicle decks weren't even full: Deck 2 was only about 3/4 full, and the gallery decks were empty, and for some reason, they still left behind about 7 cars in the comox terminal. This may have been because of the first vehicle that boarded, which was a MASSIVE Chevron truck with trailer, obviously filled to the brim with gas. It made the ship tip at least 15 degrees to the port side. This eventually was levelled out by transferring water to the other side of the boat, and loading cars on the other side of the ferry.

Some pics from Comox... I did two drawings of the 'Burnaby. The top one is about 4 feet long, and the bottom one is about 30 feet long. I couldn't fit the bottom one as a horizontal photo, so this is all you get 'till I get the panorama ready. She needs a paint job! Now she's showing off her butt! Sailing off to Powell River under the mountains...

Some pics from Comox... Similar shot, taken a few hours earlier on same day (I was on the 10:10am sailing from Comox). - notice the contrast in ship-height compared with the dolphins; because of the tide going out from when I was there to when you arrived. I like the morning cloud-curtain on the right-side of this photo, over Powell River. ========== Pictures from viewpoint along Marine Avenue in Powell River. Awaiting the noon sailing from Westview: Pano-stitch I am really happy with how this picture turned out. I like the mill smoke-stack positioned just aft of the Burnaby's stack. The Sliammon 1st-Nations village is shown on the left-side of my photo. (all photos from Dec.24, 2009)

I am currently taking the scenic route from Victoria to Vancouver via the Sunshine Coast. Today I was on the Burnaby, as well as the I-Sky. Tomorrow the Cowichan? Here are three photos of the Burnaby taken today. She is looking kind of shabby & in need of some TLC. approaching Little River Terminal @ Little River Terminal @ Westview Terminal

We also travelled on the Burnaby this week. We went to Powell River from Little River on the 8th of May and returned on the 9th of May.
The rust in the washrooms on the backs of each toilet was sickening which made us skip breakfast. Access to the upstairs was marked as closed except on of the signs was off so I went up. That was a major mistake. The carpet looked terrible and stunk and there were only 3 sets of seats in the midship region with spilled containers of drinks (probably from staff).
Back on the main deck, the carpet was heavily stained and in much need of replacement and the tint on the windows was peeling in the corners.
The logo on the front of the ship was faded and paint was peeling badly off them.
The only part of the entire ship that was clean was the Bell at the bow. Even the lifeboat was not something I would want to touch unless I really had to.
Is this really what BC Ferries should be showing the public? Is this going to help tourism? The amount of people on board was minimal and probably the crew numbers were also minimal.
The only thing that was positive on the trip was we passed the ship that is on the Texada-Powell River run and it's rust was worse!

The carpet looked terrible and stunk and there were only 3 sets of seats in the midship region with spilled containers of drinks (probably from staff). The upper inside deck is permanently closed off to passengers. It is not maintained as a passenger deck and that would be why it's not in the best shape. If you scroll back in this thread, you'll find some photos I took of it from the outside. I was on the Burnaby last summer, and this was not the case... The Queen of Burnaby has not been in for refit for quite awhile, which would explain this. When she gets repainted, hopefully next fall or winter, she will look good as new. They shine it every morning ;D I agree that they've let the conditions on this one ship get a bit icky, but overall they're pretty great. Go on their Inside Passage cruise, or a route 1/2 trip. The reason there weren't many people on board is because it's winter, not the tourist season, and not very many people need to travel between the Island and the Sunshine Coast at this time of year.

The logo on the front of the ship was faded and paint was peeling badly off them. By logo I expect you mean the BC 'Coat of Arms'. I took a picture of this last week as shown below: When I saw this I said to myself "WAC Bennett would role in his grave if he were to see this." This vessel and her sister the Q Nanaimo appear to be getting next to nothing in the way of TLC. I gather that neither vessel is scheduled for any significant work before the beginning of the summer season. Also, there appears to be no plan for the imminent replacement of either vessel which are now 45 years old. And to think someone on here tried to suggest that ferry maintenance was better today under privitizatioin then in the bad old crown corporation era of the Dogwood Fleet.

Thanks for your efforts to answer my post. I have gone on many ferries and with the exception of the Queen of Burnaby, most have been clean and well maintained. It does not matter how many travel aboard the boat, only one person has to not like it to affect many others that might have planned on traveling it. I will go via Horseshoe Bay the next time and that will be two less people using the Little River- Powell River run. Note to Wett Coast: Yes, I was referring to the Coat of Arms. It is a disgrace to see. I understand that the New Coastal Series were intended to replace the ferries on the Nanaimo-Horseshoe Bay run and those currently on it were to replace the Queen of Nanaimo and one other run. Then the new Coastal Series were given one each to the three Vancouver Island routes instead and are for the most part, moored at the docks to be pretty while ships like the Queen of Burnaby apparently are our SHOW for our tourist. What a shame!
