Then the new Coastal Series were given one each to the three Vancouver Island routes instead and are for the most part, moored at the docks to be pretty while ships like the Queen of Burnaby apparently are our SHOW for our tourist. What a shame! Well we just CAN'T let those brand-new beauties get dirty, now, can we?

During the week of June 7, 2010 food service will not be available on Queen of Burnaby (Comox-Powell River).
Full catering operations will be restored as soon as possible.
Your patience is appreciated.
LOL!

A few crops of the Burnaby from awhile ago showing how bad the rust has become at her Port Aft End.

Well first off, I'm a bit appalled by this. Considering I've been on the Burnaby a few times in the last two months and have eaten in the cafeteria. They had better address this in her next refit...whenever it is. I'm almost surprised we didn't get the Chilli sometime this spring especially considering the Burnaby has needed a paint job for at least a year-and-a-half. Her Port Aft Section is proof of this. I've pretty much said this the other day, but BCF appears to be in a "Where's the [insert retired ferry name here] when you need it?" situation. If only BCF had kept the Tsawwassen until she was 50...only a dream.

The Tyee has an item up about the asbestos issue too. It's here, with links, at thetyee.ca/Blogs/TheHook/Transportation/2010/06/08/AsbestosConsult/It says: Consultant's report provides ferry asbestos risk details By Andrew MacLeod June 8, 2010 12:57 pm Public comments from British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. about asbestos risks on the Queen of Burnaby appear to contradict a recent consultant's report on the problem. The Tyee yesterday first reported that the cafeteria has been shut on the ferry running between Comox and Powell River because of concerns about exposing passengers and crew to asbestos, a material known to cause cancer. B.C. Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall failed to respond to the Tyee's requests for information yesterday, but she did tell Vancouver radio station News 1130 today, "The air test as well as the solid test has come back but a bit of debris we found has come back negative." Meanwhile, the Province newspaper's Christina Montgomery obtained a copy of a June 4 asbestos risk assessment report on the vessel by Grant Rogers, the principal and senior occupational hygienist with North West Environmental Group Ltd.. “Results of confirmatory bulk sample testing . . . on a sample collected from the deckhead determined that the debris contains 60 [percent] amosite asbestos,” he wrote. In an area where there is work planned, “Amosite fire proofing spray insulation is embedded within all mastics on bulkheads and deckheads.” Rogers concluded, “The fact that the material tested positive for such a high concentration of amosite asbestos dictates that, as a precautionary measure, all debris should be considered asbestos containing . . . The loose debris will need to be removed from all surfaces including the top of deckhead tiles.” Also, “Based on the work procedures described by Westcor staff to be used on this project, the potential for exposure of workers and adjacent personnel to airborne asbestos fibres is high.” Marshall did not respond to a request for comment today. The Queen of Burnaby remains in service, though yesterday B.C. Ferries announced food would be unavailable on the vessel. The notice failed to explain why the cafeteria was closed. The vessel was built in 1965. Andrew MacLeod is The Tyee’s Legislative Bureau Chief in Victoria.

Only thing I have to say about that is aweful! Why dident she go out for a refit before the Wack heads up North?? Looks like she needs one!

I know that rust is only dangerous in really huge quanitites, like when it actually starts to make holes in the metal, but this actually looks pretty unsafe. Is BC Ferries insane? The Queen of Oak Bay DID NOT need a refit when you look at this old clunk o' junk. They must be out of their minds to keep her in service! Either that, or Hahn just hasn't seen it in person yet.

The Burnaby, and to a lesser extent her sister, the Nanaimo, are really looking uncared for. It has been some time now since either ship had a proper refit. Both vessels will go through the height of tourist season looking just the way they are, now.
This reflects poorly on both BCFS and the province of BC, the place that calls itself 'the best place on earth'.

Just when BCF is passing through their 50th anniversary too! What a shame. I'm surprised BCF didn't paint any fancy logos on the ferries like what they did to the Spooks on BCF's fortieth (see Wett Coast's avatar pic). I guess that kind of stuff will be happening less and less now with privatization....

I immediately noticed the picture, and wondered if it was one of our forum members' pictures. So I checked the Q-Burnaby photo thread, but couldn't find that match. I guess you've got it posted somewhere else? Anyways, good to know that Andrew McLeod of Tyee knows our site. Next time he might be able to give photo credit....

The Tyee did the same with one of my photos, but a quick e-mail note and I had a credit under it right away. (but still wish they would have asked in the first place... i'm not a fan of the Tyee..)

Regarding the Burnaby's need for a refit, perhaps this item is part of the reason?
- that's from the recently released annual report comparing total 2009/10 expenses to that of 2008/09.
Maybe after spending the $2 on the propeller, they decided to curtail any further "it can wait" type of spending on her?

I'm assuming that damaged propellar repair was done when she was drydocked last spring, when the Queen of Chilliwack went to replace her on Route 17.
The Queen of Nanaimo has been recieving the bare minimum as well, however she's not that bad compared to the Burnaby. The outer exterior of the superstructure has recieved some paint while she's in the dock at Long Harbour. Just touch ups more or less, but better than nothing. Deckhands are required to do ship husbandry duties on the morning watch, which usually means the windows get washed, and the decks get hosed down. No painting, because that is left for Deas crews to do during the upcoming refit. If it makes you guys feel any better, I cleaned off some graffiti in the solarium and polished the bell this morning. But you guys have to remember, we're not exactly given a whole bunch of time to do these sorts of things. If you're the anchors guy, you're standing out on the foc'sle for 1/2 of the trip, then you're up on the bridge as lookout for another 1/4 of the trip, and for the remaining quarter of the trip, you try to fit in two coffee breaks and a lunch break with making sure all of the garbage cans and ashtrays are empty and to help out with any daily checkoffs.

No less than BC Ferry Services themselves have 'borrowed' my photos without ever asking. My guess is that it is 'just too much trouble' going and seeking out the photographers and getting their approval.

A plethora of problems now surfacing for our Queen of Burnaby, here's one to add to the list...

What is all this baloney? It seems like all our ships are falling apart! Ever since the system was privatized (Became BC Ferry Services), or whatever you wanna call it, it seems the fleet has gone downhill maintenance wise.
