Bid $5,100 and it could be yours. Had to chuckle when reading all the machinery specs pages etc. to learn that the poor old 'Burnaby' has had 2 of her 3 generators removed! Gee, gosh, golly, I wonder where they sailed off to eh? ....and yes George, you're welcome.

Pretty sad when not even the scrap yard wants her. I would think the scrap value alone is worth more.

One of them was actually transplanted to the Nanny some time before retirement and was frankensteined into a replacement for the larger of her two bow thrusters after her Mitzi blew a piston through a cylinder wall.

Getting reports from real 'insiders' like 'yak' adds spice and colour to my dull speculative commentary and educates us all as to what really goes on 'neath the rubbing strakes of old queens like our 'Nanny'.

It appears that there’s a bit of a bidding war happening right now. The deadline keeps being extended by a few minutes, and the bids are climbing. Up over $212,000 now. Very interesting to watch in real time

The market for scrap steel is depressed, even before you take into account the cost of getting the ship to the nearest breakers yard, presumably in Ensenada. Alaska is still trying to close a deal for the Taku at less than $200k.

I wonder what the scrap value of the ship is. I can't really seem to find a scrap steel price at the moment, and I bet they have other fun stuff they'll need to get out of that ship (asbestos).
And where does the ship go to get torn apart (or does it wind up next to the Queen of Sidney up in Mission)?
*Corrects the spelling of Sidney, which I should know after living on the island for four years while going to UVic*

Here's a bit of information. www.marinelink.com/news/maritime/ship-steel-scrap-priceMaybe part of the problem is that the ' Burnaby is a fairly small vessel, with hazardous waste issues, and a long way from the cheapest scrapping 'yards' in Asia. Surely the cost of getting the vessel to the dismantling site is in itself daunting.

Once this deal is formalized, we may or may not be privy as to who the actual buyer of the 'Burnaby' was. (Could this information be obtained under the freedom of information act)? If an off-shore buyer completes the transaction, what would prevent them from either hanging onto the vessel until scrap prices improve or selling it off to another demo yard that does not have stringent regulations? BCFS must have been pleasantly surprised at the late bidding war that seemed to have ensued after a rather slow and low $$ bidding process. "Someone" is up to something. "Someone" that knows what they're doing.

You're quite right that the last known location for the Queen of Burnaby isn't working anymore; her last AIS report was August 26th according to VesselFinder. I wonder if the Burnaby has been repositioned, or if she's left FMU for good.

When I drove in to work this morning, the Salish Orca and the Queen of Burnaby had swapped positions.
