I've always been happily intrigued as to why the Cowichan and Coquitlam were never modified at all to increase passenger capacity, like the Alberni has been, to bring them more in line with the Surrey and Oak Bay (again...I'm NOT COMPLAINING AT ALL! I prefer them in their original state!), such as filling in the areas immediately behind the pickle forks, where the stairs to the upper promenade deck are, and maybe extending the lounges at either end forward a bit. I realize the Alberni desperately needed more passenger space when her car carrying capacity was increased.

Queen of Cowichan arriving at Nanaimo's Departure Bay at 6:40pm on April 12, 2014. - seen from atop Sugarloaf Mountain. With Entrance Island (lighthouse) in background, and Jesse Island in foreground In the bay, with Newcastle Island as a backdrop Stopped for a rescue boat drill. With Newcastle Island's Shaft Point in the background. ---------------------- In nice light, the old 'Cowichan is a pleasing ship to look at. Classic BC Ferries "2nd Generation Era" look.

I think the lack of an expansion was because the space differential between Oak-Bay Surrey and Cowichan Coquitlam wasn't that big of a difference. Alberni was a huge difference, hence the reason that she got upgraded; because the Alberni inside-gain was worth the costs & time of the renovations. I think that with the Cowichan & Coquitlam, the inside-space gained wouldn't have been worth the large cost & effort required to do the renovation.

Again, I'm grateful the Coq and Cowie remain mostly un-modified. If only we could say the same for the poor Alberni... Attachments:

A few more of Q-Cowichan from the evening of April 12, 2014 Passing Nares Point on Newcastle Island - with Mt. Baker Heading towards the mainland - in these next 2 photos, you can see the tall tower in the Downtown Vancouver area. The 2nd photo (sans ferry) shows the sun hitting the tower.

Queen of Cowichan is taking a sick-day on Saturday April 19, 2014. Because 2 other ferries were being stored at Departure Bay that day (Coquitlam & C'Renaissance), the sick Cowichan needed to get out of bed whenever Oak Bay came by. I saw this happen at noon. While Oakie is in berth at Departure Bay, Cowichan is busy killing time and testing out her ailing body in the strait When Oak Bay leaves Departure Bay, Cowichan Bay heads back for Departure Bay for her sick bay, while Alberni Bay leaves from Duke Point Bay One of my lifelong dreams has been to capture all 3 versions of C-Class in one frame. - Now I need to find a new goal. Cowichan heading into the bay, with her 2 C-Sisters still in frame Cowichan does some ballet work in the middle of the bay. - I'll later post video of her pirouette Cowichan back with her twin and her super friend

May I suggest renting a Sewell's Boat and getting a photo of the 1976 & 81 twins together. Just go on a Sunday, and hope they're running late!

The Q'Cowichan seen last Saturday evening, from Sugarloaf Mountain in Nanaimo. - Leaving her 1976 twin behind. Departing on her 7:00pm sailing to Horseshoe Bay I fell off of the cliff in this photo when I was 12 (summer 1981) trying out an old rope swing I found hanging off of an Arbutus tree which was growing out over the edge. Needless to say, the rope broke. Put me in the Nanaimo hospital for a week with my left arm busted in two places and a severe concussion. With Entrance Island and Greater Vancouver in the background.

Queen of Cowichan is looking good at Snake Island, near the entrance to Departure Bay. - seen by me from Gabriola Island, on May 24, 2014. A few moments earlier, doing a peek-a-boo behind Chinook (Snake) Island. -------------- The 38 year old ship is still the #1 ship based from Departure Bay for most of the year. Starting Friday June 6th, C'Renaissance pushes Cowichan out of the way.

Much like SC Commuter above, I experienced a Route 3 Round Trip on the Cowichan. (not so recently though) Here are a few pictures from that back in June. All Photos are © CS16 Photography and may only be used with Permission from the Owner. The Sailing was a very light one as the Surrey had taken the bulk of the Traffic the sailing before. The empty sailing made doing a Walkthrough easy. Deck 2, Car Deck, Queen of Cowichan. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr Builder's Plaque, Queen of Cowichan. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr You can see the Surrey and Coquitlam at Langdale in this Shot. Deck 5, Pickle Fork Deck, Queen of Cowichan. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr The Two Sisters of 1976 at Langdale. A shot much like the one I got of the 1981 Sisters last Year. (Now if I could just get the Alberni here...) Queen of Cowichan and Queen of Coquitlam Docked at Langdale. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr Finally, the Cowichan in Berth 1.
