According to Global, the Queen of Oak Bay is running 45 minutes late due to a machanical at the start of her day.

The Queen of Oak Bay has been chronically late which seemed to be progressively getting worse as the day went on. She's now about 90 minutes behind schedule. Starting off at only 45 minutes late this morning. Luckily traffic seems fairly light on Route 2 tonight. The Oak Bay departed Departure Bay at 18:27 for the 17:00 sailing, and the 21:00 sailing from Horseshoe Bay is only about 40% full so far.

Here's a video of crossing the strait the other day on the Queen of Oak Bay. This was after service all morning was cancelled on all of the major routes. I guess this would have been that first sailing at 3:00pm. It was still fairly choppy out there for a semi sheltered (or semi exposed?) crossing. The video is only entertaining from about 1:15 onwards. It nearly reminds me of a crossing I had on the Queen of Cowichan a few years ago but this wasn't quite as bad as that one since the winds would have been diminishing by that point.

Great video...but it reminds me that we have become much more cautious in the last 20 years or so. Back in the 80's/90's, the only southern mainland-VI routes that were usually cancelled were those to/from Tsawwassen. The official BCF news releases used to state that it was because of the open nature of Tsawwassen terninal, and that's why route 2 was hardly ever cancelled.
I was commonplace to see the route 2 vessels sailing with a wooden plug or 2 in position for a few days following a windstorm a few times each year.
As someone who does't like change, I would like to say that no one used to get hurt at those times, but maybe we were taking unecessary risks?

That would of been a fun sailing to be on. I was on the Celebration today and the SOBC and it was a bit choppy but it wasent as bad as the other day or in that video. I take it they woulf of had the outer decks closed off??

As someone who does't like change, I would like to say that no one used to get hurt at those times, but maybe we were taking unecessary risks? It wouldn't be surprising if there had been a crackdown on rough weather sailings by southern ferries after the sinkings of the Herald of Free Enterprise and the Estonia. The dangers of flooded car decks weren't fully appreciated by the ferry industry and regulators until after the Estonia sinking was investigated in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Sped-up video (5x speed) shot from Sugarloaf Mountain above Departure Bay, Nanaimo. - December 24, 2012, from noon to 1:00pm.
Showing the Queen of Alberni heading around Entrance Island, towards Duke Point. Also showing Queen of Oak Bay passing Snake Island and entering Departure Bay.
Then showing Queen of Oak Bay in berth-2 discharging traffic and then loading for next sailing. I like how you can see the traffic lanes loading, and even see some late-arriving vehicles at the toll booths and then hustling down to the berth for loading.
Then ending with the reverse of the opening: Oak Bay leaves the bay, and Alberni appears from behind Newcastle Island.
A fun hour spent outdoors during a non-rain period.
ps: - at 4:47 mark, the Queen of Coquitlam lets off a bunch of smoke. But she's not even in-service that day.

Coky and Oakie, seen at Departure Bay. - December 24, 2012. Coquitlam is out-of-service on that day, sitting in berth-3. But she's smoking a bit. Oak Bay is in berth-2, loading or unloading. I'm on Sugarloaf Mountain, having a fun time.

Why is the Queen of Oak Bay at Langdale? She left HSB at around 2:40 and looked empty. She actually made the Queen of Coquitlam late for her 3pm sailing as the Coquitlam was sitting out in the bay of a good 5 to 10 min waiting for the Oak Bay to leave. A shot of her departure.

The Coquitlam is taking over for the Oak Bay starting this afternoon for how long I dont know. Maybe they are storing her at Langdale till they take her to wherever she is going for refit.
