Doesn't this mark the first time a BC Ferries vessel has ever been sold to continue passenger operations on our coast?
Maybe my favorite ferry. Great news indeed. Mr Horn... how do you think she'll compare with the Frances Barkley for overall passenger experience? I imagine they'll open up her long closed food service area. Sechelt Queen might be the first, re her transfer from Dogwood Fleet to Ministry of Highways. ---------------- Considering that their galley and small-bar is already a popular item on the 'Barkley, I fully expect the same thing on Tenaka. I didn't get a chance to ask about design changes when I chatted with people back in late February, but I am assuming that there will be changes, unless Lady Rose Marine is looking at doing vehicle ro/ro, which I don't think they would be wanting to do. Maybe the two aft outside sundecks will be joined, covering over the center vehicle lane. And I can imagine the boom cranes at the bow. And hopefully there would be an outside aft stairway (sorry, "ladder") leading from current car deck to the upper outside decks. Otherwise those narrow Tenaka stairway passages will be bottle-neck problems, especially for the older passenger clientelle which is one of Lady Rose Marine's main tourism markets. Wouldn't they need cranes fore and aft? I don't know if they need more freight space, but I imagine they'll have it with Tenaka.
I wouldn't consider the Sechelt Queen as a precedent... that was basically one provincial government operation to another.

I wonder if they plan to keep the Frances Barkley and use Tenaka as a 2nd ship. The Tenaka would definentley have more cargo space than the Frances Barkley. I wonder what she needs to pass TC certification...?

A comparison of two ships:
MV Frances Barkley: - length 39.01 metres - beam 7.32 metres
MV Tenaka: - length 47.09 metres - beam 13.29 metres
Tenaka is a space upgrade.

This is great for the services out of Port Alberni. Here's a great article of the sale: www.albernivalleynews.com/news/375278361.htmlTwo key paragraphs are extracted from that story that explains what she'll be doing this year: “We’re going to bring the vessel home from the Deas dock and we will set it here for maintenance,” Surrell said. “We’re going to work on it through the summer…and in all likeliness we’ll send it to retrofit in the winter.
“It will go into service we think early next year.”
Now, when is the NIMPKISH going to be replaced on her northern services? Hopefully with a ferry as good as the TENAKA.

Here's an Alberni Valley Times story on the purchase: from HERE---------- With regard to the mention in the story about Mr. Surrell "being aware that she is a car ferry." It's important to remember that HIDLE (now MV Frances Barkley) was also a car ferry before she was converted for Barkley Sound use. However with Tenaka's greater size, there does appear to be potential to retain some space in the aft area for a few vehicles, with a fitted "Nimpkish style" stern ramp. I'm just speculating. But the larger deck space gives flexibility.

...and sold. This arrived in my mailbox just now. I'm so very happy with this news. I'm really looking forward to riding this ship in future, under the Lady Rose Marine Services flag. What a great day. Did you not give them (LRM) the idea?

What are some speculation ideas for Tenaka as part of the Lady Rose Marine fleet?
ie. design changes?
If the name is to be changed, what are some good possibilities?
------------------------------
Currently, the ship looks like this. Think this through in terms of the LRMS business of tourism passengers (lots of outside viewing), freight, kayak transport, and some remote locations where a vehicle transport would be in demand (think a crew work truck, or backhoe): - 3 vehicle lanes, centre lane is full height - large open area at bow on car deck - smaller open area at stern on car deck - 2 washrooms on car deck level - 2 saddle lounges, access by narrow stairway from car deck, and exiting to aft sundecks - Main forward lounge with forward and side views, washrooms, and access to aft upper sundeck.
Where do you put: - the freight boom cranes? - the freight deck, including a hold below decks? - Where to put the galley and eating area? - Where will the passengers spend 5 hours lounging outside each way, soaking in the sun and spying eagles and whales? - Where will Mr. Horn be, with his camera?

I have been thinking about this, and have some ideas of what I think may happen. >I think the boom crane would go on one of the pickleforks on the aft end of Deck 3. >The aft end of the car deck will be converted into the cargo hold. The "covered" portions would be beneath the mezzanine decks. >The forward end of the Car deck will become a sun deck with a lovely forward view. >The gate used for the gangway on which passengers disembark and board would be on the picklefork, between the saddle lounge and the boom crane. >One of the saddle lounges would be converted into a snack bar >The vessel would sport the LRMS color scheme >I personally do not believe vehicles will be carried. This is an illustration I have created showing the modifications I think may happen. (Please forgive the crude artwork, I am incredibly terrible at Art) *This photo was taken by member Elwha on the Rocks and is used here with permission.

Frankly, rather than our idle speculation, I'm depending on Mr Horn to use his benign influence to get us some sort of scoop, eventually. I'm intrigued by Mike Surrell's comment, "we are aware it's a car ferry". Because of Tenaka's deep hull, it certainly can't be converted to a landing craft, and no one's going to be constructing car ferry slips. I wonder what he meant.

Well the idea of a sun deck or just plain open deck space is something I can c, It would be way better than FB. Passenger entry probably bang on! Its already got a hole! lol! Aft car deck def for cargo..and on back car deck too. And Does anyone know where the Snack bar was on her when she was COmox Queen? Is it still their? I think they would want to put a galley in...which Im wondering if maybe they would add a galley/seating to the main car deck under the existing superstructure, since washrooms are their anyways and would def be much easier to just get a pre fab piece made for galley/seating and insert it in the middle of the main car deck, Def lots of room for a crane too on the back, And I think Tenaka is much faster than FB! Mr Horn would be up by the "Horns" lol!

FI'm intrigued by Mike Surrell's comment, "we are aware it's a car ferry". Because of Tenaka's deep hull, it certainly can't be converted to a landing craft, and no one's going to be constructing car ferry slips. I wonder what he meant. I'm very curious about that too. I've seen on the various protest facebook pages that people are assuming that Tenaka will be working a vehicle route in Alberni Inlet. I'm 99.5% certain that this isn't true. What I still expect is that there might be room for some heavy-duty type work trucks or backhoes for the aft car deck, maybe. But I don't think that would work very easily. It would be tough to load those at Lady Rose's current location. And it would be impossible for Tenaka to get in close enough into a place like Haggard Cove to offload a vehicle. Even with the jetties at West & East Bamfield, the car deck is far too low compared to the jetty deck height, especially at lower tides. I think the Mr. Surrell is saying that they're aware it's currently a car ferry, and that they're aware that conversion work is needed. That's just my own interpretation. Every time I've seen him quoted in the media, he has kept his cards close to his chest. So I think the news store quote is just him keeping his ship conversion plans private.

The second to last paragraph of the Alberni Valley Times story of the sale of the 'MV Tenaka' should finally dispel the negative comments leveled at Mr. George Goundar for his purchase of a newer used vessel from BC Ferries for Fijian service. "Phenominal maintenance", and "top notch condition" are usually two check marks buyers take into account when buying anything 'used'. Good on both these buyers for recognizing: "it's the quality of what you're buying, not where you're going to deploy your purchase".

I've taken several screen shots of the TENAKA passing Race Rocks. Here are my best three from this camera: TENAKA passing Race Rocks with my state in the background. Heading out on the Juan De Fuca Strait. I know most of you don't like small dots of ships of interest. But, I included this one that shows her passing part of East Sooke Regional Park. She disappeared from this camera shortly afterwards. Next cams are: Bamfieldwww.bamfieldmsc.com/webcamPort Alberniwww.bigwavedave.ca/webcams.php?cam=11This passing of a former BC ferry has a happier story as compared to the 426-footers we've seen on this camera. The TENAKA has a new future at Port Alberni in serving that region for years to come. We thank Race Rocks Cam for allowing us to see this ferry pass by on her way out. Visit their site!
