So for some reason one of my friends has wanted to make a new company called BC Speakers and has wanted to repair the Queen of Sidney and put it on some random route to compete with BC Ferries. I don't think it would be possible to repair the Queen of Sidney at its current state and I also wouldn't want to see BC Speakers become a ferry company. This post makes absolutely zero sense, so I can only assume that someone has had an early start on New Year's Eve lubrication. Although... you mention speakers, and today in my new White Rock condo, I packed Christmas away, and set up my stereo, which had been in storage for several months. Thirty five year old Advent speakers. They sound great! But they still won't bring the poor old Queen of Sidney back to life. 2020 - 35 years = 1985. So your speakers were new in 1985 (see, I can do basic arithmetic). So one has to wonder: What music was played through those speakers when they were new? Wham! was big in 1985, with both "Careless Whisper" and "Wake me up, before you go-go" in the top-5 for the year. Madonna was in the early stage of her long career, with "Like a virgin" as a big 1985 hit. But, you liked public transportation back then. So let me peruse the Billboard Top-100 for 1985 and find the most public transportation-like hit song of the year. ....drum roll please. "Take On Me," by a-ha. Go to the Buckley Bay ticket booth on a Friday afternoon in the summer of 1985, see the big lineup, stride up to the ticket booth and demand "Take on Me" (and the Dung-Bomb too).

Hmmh... your mention of what was current in '85 makes me realize they're even older than that. Battered and bruised, with grills that even show the marks from long past uncouth cats. Actually, tonight I played Pentangle, Doors, and Joni Mitchell's 'For the Roses'. So we're back to the '70s. Terrible to be so old. Upside is, I'm still alive.

Hey, I owned Advent speakers once upon a time. They were purchased from Sound Hounds in Victoria. I used to listen to transit 'sort of' related tunes such as Stairway to Heaven, by Neil Sedaka, & Ferry Cross the Mersey, by Jerry & the Pacemakers. Soon, I will need a pacemaker just to keep going ...

So the same person who wants to make a new Ferry company called BC Speakers and wants to bring the Queen of Sidney also wants to sink my favourite BC Ferry, The Queen of Oak Bay which makes me very sad. It sound like he actually wants to become a pirate and use the Queen of Sidney as his ship and sink the Queen of Oak Bay. I will make sure to protect the Queen of Oak Bay.

I like your style of humour writing. Good satire is hard to find. In a future episode, please have the BC Speakers founder bring back the classic menu on mainline ferries.

IF, in some future episode, the BC Speakers founder wants to bring back the classic menu from the mainline ferries, I have three pristine copies of that menu, complete with the 'special meal' of the day inserts, which come bearing the prices of yesteryear. Yes, supplying the classic old menus is putting the 'cart before the horse', but I thought maybe they may be the added incentive to spend the millions of dollars to resurrect the dear old 'Sidney'.

1968 newspaper ad highlighting the Sidney's supplemental status in the fleet..... Interesting. The only time I ever sailed on her was when she was on Comox-Powell River. Her hardwood handrails were unique.

the MV Tsawwassen had the hand rails too, but was retrofitted in the late 70s.... The Sidney kept hers.... the period this schedule represents is the time when 1/ The Sidney was essential , the only full time relief ship in the off season for routes 1 and 2, , and 2/. in peak summer service, important in not only supporting capacity on route 1, but also route 9. This ad was from what I can see designed to encourage travellers to aim for the extra sailings....

Cool video. I love the casual mention of using lead paint and showing the application process of spraying the asbestos. Welcome to 1960. and lead paint! Presumably the new ships being constructed now (or over the past couple of decades) have no 'nasties' like asbestos or lead paint, but nevertheless will have nasties of other sorts. We just haven't figured out yet what those nasties are ... Its interesting looking at this 60+ year old video at the PPE being used (or not being used) in ship construction at the time. In particular the respiratory protection for those spraying on the asbestos coatings. It is almost a certainty that most if not all of those workers had lives shortened by one of the asbestos related diseases (asbestosis, lung cancer, or the dreaded mesotheliama).

Speaking of the dreaded substance mentioned above aboard the SIDNEY and TSAWWASSEN ...
While attending the Open Ship aboard the PRINCESS MARGUERITE at Pier 48 Seattle after her inaugural voyage from Victoria for BCSS in 1975, I noticed some sprayed insulation (or fire protection) on the overhead deckhead in the new lounge on the Purser and Dining Saloon deck. This replaced the upper car deck which was established in 1972 (which replaced the deluxe staterooms and social halls). In 1981, ceiling plates were installed covering over the sprayed substance and "simulated wood paneling" covered over the exposed steel on the sides.
I just wonder if that substance was asbestos or something else?

I work in the remediation industry and for a long time cover it and forget about it was the normal process. Likely it was coated with Lead Paint as well because most ship coatings were until the mid 80s. Cheers Timmyboy

Queen of Sidney in the Fraser River, today.
And just to the left of it you can see a bit of the remains of the one-time WSF San Mateo.

If I parked a derelict car outside my building here in White Rock, it would probably be ordered removed within a week. I know we challenged the owner of a van that had been here for two days. But these hideous wrecks imperil our rivers for decades. Why do we have so little respect for our environment? The ' Sidney should have gone to the wreckers after BC Ferries retired her. At the very least, it's good to see that the Queen of Burnaby is still hugging the wall at Deas... evidence that our public ferry company is not going to let the bones of her go to someone who isn't going to dispose of her properly.
