If you were to stretch the Sidney class, the stretch would have to be made behind the funnel. This of course, would disturb the engines and shafting. I also think there was an issue with them being of a narrower beam than the 7 Sisters. In a nutshell, stretching became impractical.

Weren't the 7 sisters originally designed with future "stretching" in mind?

The Tsawwassen is as of last week at the top of Toba Inlet housing a work crew building road for run of the river hydro projects There was a series running on the Equator HD channel (I think?) called "Canada Over the Edge" touring Canada's coastlines from the air. One episode a few weeks ago flew up Tobe Inlet, and there was the former Queen of Tsawwassen in HD glory. We were recording it, but then the PVR decided to crap out, so someone will have to buy the DVDs .

I just tried a google search of "Toba Inlet", and discovered this webcam that shows a bit of the stern of the Tsawwassen. www.wunderground.com/webcams/TobaInlet/1/show.html

Its been 5 Years since the Tsawwassen last sailed for BC Ferries. I was thinking about what to do to mark this occasion and decided I would pick out the best photos from my collection and give them the Photoshop Treatment. The entire collection can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/ship-rider16/sets/72157635597757955/Here are some of the Highlights. Warning: Photo Heavy! All Photos are © CS16 Photography and may only be used with Permission from the Owner. This was the first picture I ever took of the Tsawwassen back in December 2004. Not long before this she had those appearance changing Fire Windows installed. Queen of Tsawwassen Docked at Berth 2 Saltery Bay. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr Some might familiar with this shot from Early 2005 taken from the Westview Wharf. Shame that the Wharf would be closed to the public a few months later. Queen of Tsawwassen Approaching Westview. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr Another from Early 2005, it's amazing to see how Westview Terminal has changed since then. Queen of Tsawwassen, Approaching Westview. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr This one is from August 2005. I can't explain why she did this, but as she approached Earls Cove she did a 360 before going into the Berth. Wild guess would be that astern propulsion didn't activate immediately, though maybe the captain was just showboating... Who knows? I was switching between camera and camcorder so I didn't take nearly as many shots as I would have wanted of her approach that day. I was able to fix some of them though. Yes, I miss the old Tsawwassen. Too bad they installed those damn fire windows on her forward lounge and the extended exhaust pipes in her funnel. We were on the Coho recently, and I noticed she doesn't have the outer bridge wing supports that the Tsawwassen and Sidney had. I like the other similarities, though. Nice to walk around on an old classic like that.

The museum in Sidney BC has the builders model of the MV Tsawwassen. - the plaque says that it was presented to Hon. Phil Gaglardi (then Transportation Minister for BC) by Burrard Dry Dock Co. Ltd. of North Vancouver. - seen by me in October 2013. -------------------------------

Very nice model. Was the name ever really that big on her bow, or is it scaled up for identification purposes.

Here is a short old home movie clip of the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in the summer of 1960 I believe. The ferry docking is either the the Tsawwassen or the Sidney

A nostalgic thought on the venerable original 'Queens", as they were the 'Cat's Meow' back in the day, but wouldn't the pair of them look awfully good at being substitute vessels on the Westview - Comox and Southern Gulf Islands runs if not elsewhere?, or has my yearning for the good old days just gotten the better of me ...again?

It probably has... even though I know exactly where you're coming from.
I'm rather afraid that when the new 145 car vessels are delivered, modern IMO mandated standards will necessitate big, bulky vessels that are much more expensive ton for ton than the initial BC Ferries ships... and the trade off will be cramped passenger cabins and spartan food services such as we saw in that recent post which showed some disgusting little meatballs on a bed of noodles garnished with a couple of skanky pieces of broccoli, de-frosted in a microwave.
Welcome to the brave new world of cattle car marine transit... and bon appetit.

Cuisine issues aside for the moment, BC Ferries has once again hammered home their lack of planning in announcing the replacement of the Queen of Cumberland with the Bowen Queen, while offering up alomost 'contemptable' service solutions to those good customers that Must use their sytem on a daily basis. How sad.

From the collection of my brother, David mrdot ... This has been scanned this evening from an 8x10 print in David's collection. The photographer may have been David; I have to ask him .... I also can only guess at the date & location, though I have a hunch that it was later in the Expo livery era (c2000) and was taken during one of those periods when this vessel was covering for the Q Nanaimo during a refit. The location may be off Sturdies Bay. If anyone has an idea feel free to let me know.
