Just noting that another anniversary passed, on last Sunday: March 22, 2020 - 14 years. I still miss that fine looking and functional ship. I for one, would love to see the Queen of the North salvaged as leaving it to decay in the cold dark depths seems nautically cruel.

I do remember that you fellow ferry fans had explained that the deck crew could not have seen Gil Island so a serious scenario you can take home with you is your telling me that if the Spirit Of Vancouver Island runs straight into salt spring island at 19.5 knots and I am saying salt spring as it is the closest gulf island yet still smaller than gil island and tell me and the engineers that the SOVI deck crew could not see the salt spring island is a abosoulute disgusting and demeaning thing to say let alone think about given the fact that 2 people died and it could have easily been more had the engineers not known that ship as well as they did. Please keep that in mind when you try to say anything as disgusting as that again!

I hope you can all understand what i am about to say, but it sickens and disgusts me that my favorite ferry and the jewel of the BC Ferries fleet sank because of total crew incompetence! The fact 2 people went down with the ship,it should've never ever happened! The fact that the officer in the wheelhouse that fateful night couldn't do the most simple da** job by looking out the da** bridge windows and make sure that they were on the right heading is a absolute crime and the life lost could've been much greater especially considering the engineers! it will always haunt me knowing that the Queen of the North was sunk because two crew members couldn't do their jobs in the bridge! RIP Queen of the North 1969-2006 Considering it happened in the wee hours of the morning with little to no ambient light, looking out the bridge windows wouldn't have accomplished much. this is the reason I have done the rant so I'd appreciate it if mike apologizes to me and and John pannito who nearly lost his life and broke both of his thumbs backwards on the deck plates between the #1 and #2 engines on the fatal night of March 22 2006

Another notable anniversary today - March 22, 2021 1969 - 2006 Thanks for mentioning that. 15 years have gone by already. That's enough time for it to have disappeared from my radar, so to speak. I'm glad that I rode that ship, at least 3 times that I know of: - One as Queen of Surrey, from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay - One in 2004 northbound inside passage - One in 2005 for an end of season repositioning cruise from Port Hardy to Tsawwassen.

Hey Low Light Mike. I was also on that repositioning cruise in October 2005 (although I would have only been 8 years old then). That was my first and only time aboard. That was a beautiful trip.
I still remember being woken up by my parents on March 22, 2006 and them saying that she had sunk. I was convinced it was an early April Fools joke so I would get up out of bed and ready for school but unfortunately it was not.
I saved all of the newspapers though and have a binder full of news coverage and some old VHS Tapes (which I should probably make digital) with reports from that time (along with other BCF incidents such as the Queen of Oak Bay running into the marina.
I also cannot believe it has been 15 years...

That is awesome to know that we were both on that trip. There were a couple other forum members or ex-members on that trip: Karl, and Sandi. Unfortunately for me, that trip was about 4 years before I got my first digital camera, so I didn't take any photos. But that gave me lots of time to relax and enjoy the passing scenery. Mike

I think I have some digital pictures I could post from that trip but not sure the best way to do so (although they are probably pretty grainy compared to many of the other beautiful pictures on the forum)

- One in 2005 for an end of season repositioning cruise from Port Hardy to Tsawwassen. Was the repositioning cruise for the change to the winter vessel on route 10?

Yes, and also because Queen of the North was going in for off-season refit work. It was early October, I think. Then when she came out of refit the next year, she lasted 2 weeks & 1 day before the sinking.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he have some of his artwork on the QOTN Yes, he did, a coloured drawing depicting the QotN & QPR side by side. I don't believe it went down with the vessel, but I don't know for sure.

Today, I am remembering this ship. It has been 16 years already.... Queen of Surrey 1974-75 era by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr The photo is at Horseshoe Bay in either 1974 or 1975, when the ship was Queen of Surrey. This was at the end of a family trip, when I was 6 or 7 years old. The photo is by my late father, using his Pentax camera, with the photo later developed in his basement darkroom.

Thank you Low Light Mike for the reminder post. As I noted last year I have some pictures from the last repositioning cruise (Port Hardy to Tsawwassen) on October 1, 2005. I am not sure the best way to post those photos but I have attached them to this post. Here are 5 and two more will be attached in the next post. Hope you all will enjoy these.

Unfortunately I do not have many pictures from inside the ship but the seven photos are posted in chronological order from leaving Port Hardy to arrival and unloading in Tsawwassen. I have a few others as well but unfortunately they are blurry. This was the first trip we took as a family with a digital camera (it is amazing how far technology has come in 16 years). Attachments:

Nice pic, with some nice old cars - love the Cadillac Eldorado. I remember sailing on the original Queen of Surrey too, on route 2. She looked amazing pulling into Departure Bay, so different than the other ships on that route.
