Today's installment... Queen of Surrey on run from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay - 30 June 1975 This is the second time that I've noticed this, and no longer think that I'm going crazy: What is that sticking out of the bow at the water-line, sponson?

That's looking like the bulbous bow, or when the car deck used to extend out under the lifting bow. That doesn't look safe to me, but it's sure a good thing they fixed it to look like more of a proper bow!

Today's view comes from December 1980 at berth 5 - Tsawwassen Terminal. At that time the QotN, on its winter schedule, made one round trip per week from Rupert to Port Hardy, and on to Tsawwassen. It made a second round trip south to PH only. The Tsawwassen trips were cut when BCFC decided to use one ship for both the Inside Passage and Haida Gwaii routes. Berth 5 was radically altered about 12 years later to accommodate the Spirit class vessels. Ah, yes, the North at Tsawwassen. I have a pic of the North sitting stern-to at berth 5 in expo colours at Tsawwassen. It's in the"Vancouver to Victoria" magazine that was sold on the Spirits back in the late 90s.

Something you won't see too often these days: a ship with a bow-visor berthed bow-to at Tsawwassen. Great pic, btw. All these shots are valuable to us; throw in a rare sight like that, and we couldn't be happier.

Installment for April 24th: Queen of the North berthed stern to at Bear Cove, Port Hardy - 1994 This was done during period that bow door was welded shut following Eastonia sinking in Europe. That's quite rare to see the QON or QPR docked stern-in at Pt. Hardy

Wow, I would have never believed it if I never saw these pictures.
The extension to the bow cardeck was probably to allow for the shore ramp to sit on the vessle to allow unloading and off loading.
I wonder what mechanism was used to dock her stern to dock at Bear cove? Did BC Ferries add a stern ramp to the vessle or was the shore dock had a ramp installed?

Great pics, thanks! Those shots that you have are certainly worthy of a gallery of their own, although you wouldn't have full control over when people see them, as you do now. I've got to admit, though, that my mouth is watering for the next installment, which wouldn't be the case if they were all available at once Thanks again, and keep 'em coming

This whole thread has just stunning images!
Thanks for sharing them with those of us who thought the ships would look this way forever......or for those of us who were too young to get photos of our own!!

Instalment for 10 May 2006 Queen of the North @ the old Alaska Berth, Fairview (Prince Rupert) Terminal - 31 May 1980. The occasion was the 'Open Ship' that marked the beginning of service by the QotN on the Inside Passage route on that same day. This photo was taken at the occasion of the 'Open Ship' held at the beginning of the summer season for 1980, when this vessel was brand new to the run. Also notable is that the ship is berthed at the old slip now used only by AMHS vessels. Photos showing the QotNorth at this berth must be pretty rare. I believe that it was early in 1981 that BC Ferries opened its own berth located just a little to the north of the Alaska berth. © WCK/JST - Kitschrome - 80-03-20 - VueScan] by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Well, if the model hasn't ended up in the maritime museum, I can't begin to imagine where it would surface, if ever. If it didn't get to the Maritime Museum of BC, I sure as hell hope it didn't end up as part of an act at the No. 5 Orange...............
