Do you know the name of the photographer? Unfortunately no. The slide only has a date and a caption of "Seymour Narrows, passing ferry".

Tomorrow, March 22nd, is the 17th anniversary of the loss of Queen of the North. March 22, 2006. I was able to travel on her, on 3 routes: - Route 2 from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, as Queen of Surrey, in 1974 or 1975 (see photo below). - Inside Passage northbound in 2004 - Repositioning trip from Port Hardy to Tsawwassen in October 2005. (see photo below) My father took this photo, in the mid 1970s. I too sailed on her when she was Queen of Surrey, from Departure Bay to HSB. She looked so grand as she appeared from behind Newcastle Island entering Departure Bay.

I did a HS Bay to Departure Bay sailing one Spring day which happened to be quite stormy! We did a fair bit of rock'n rolling to the extent that the section of deck that could be raised ( I think it was near the dining room or part of it) lifted a few inches) Lots of sick bags handed out and used during that crossing. And...no I did not have to partake.

I too am remembering the Queen of the North some 17 years after that unfortunate night in March 2006. Had that night never happened might she still be in service, somewhere in Fiji?
I leave you all with another look at The North from March 1997. I was aboard the QPR arriving from Prince Rupert. After we were unloaded the QPR & QotN traded places allowing the Rupert to sail south for its spring refit.

As the Queen of the North this vessel had just one boat per side, though as the Surrey (1) it had four per side. In this photo I assume that a life boat drill was being done while they waited for the Rupert to complete what needed to be done in the Bear Cove berth.

What you are looking at in the pictures above is a modification made to facilitate bow loading at Horseshoe Bay. The ship was modified when it came to BC and unmodified when it was converted for northern service in 1980. Bet that made for slow unloading on route 2 - one row of cars at a time! It most certainly did. But the vessel's speed during the crossing allowed more terminal 'dwell time' thus she was able to keep the schedule along with her three running mates on the route at that time (New West, Burnaby & Nanaimo).
That "mouth retainer" (source Low Light Mike) allowed the vessel to fit into the berths at Horseshoe Bay. A similar modification at the stern did the same for fitting in at Departure Bay. Those mods were removed when QoSurrey 1 became Queen of the North.
