Another pic, scanned from an 8x10" glossy b&w photo, part of the DOT Collection.  The photo is marked on the back: MV Kaloke at Departure Bay, near Nanaimo. The photo has no date but I'm guessing that it is from a year or two prior to the BCF takeover, so circa 1960. The photo is also marked "Please credit the BC Department of Travel Industry" |

Just curious:
How extensive was the retro-fit from "City of Sacramento" to "Kahloke".
Was it practically a new ship?
(Was it kind of like Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader, or Steve Austin from astronaut to bionic-man ? Or was it less extreme, like Puff Daddy to P-Diddy, or Ultra Walker to HMCS Nanaimo?)

I'm guessing it was from the Hull up. Kinda like the John Atlantic Burr to the Kuper.

I am continuing to search my old slide and negative collection for pictures worth sharing. This less than sharp photo of the Langdale Queen was taken on the 5th of May 1975 through the window of BC Rail's northbound Cariboo Dayliner. I was on my way to summer work with the BC Forest Service planting trees and fire fighting in the Cariboo region.  In the distance is, I believe, the Howe Sound Queen, which was then new to BC waters. |

The following somewhat scratchy photo is of Horseshoe Bay circa 1970. In the pic you can see an unstretched Queen of New Westminster, and the Langdale Queen. The photo must have been taken during a spell of clear winter 'outflow' weather, not long before the QNWM was stretched. I believe that my brother collected this photo from a calender. It would be nice to get hold of a better copy.  DOT Collection |

That's a neat shot.... my goodness, the Langdale Queen looks small. When she's not shown against one of the larger boats, you can forget that she was actually only a few feet longer than the Bowen Queen, and not as wide.

And yet whenever you see a picture of the Langdale by herself
she always seems to possess such a large, imposing presence of
grace and dignity.
But, of course, she must have had tough character to be able to
serve reliably for more than 80 years in her various forms.

Thank you, Jim; it was a significant revalation to me just now to learn the relative size of the Langdale Queen ex-Asbury Park, etc., to others of the fleet of the time that we also no longer have.

Notice she is registerd in Nanaimo, Not Victoria. If she was a BlackBall vessel at the time then she would have been registered wherever they had there corporate office. According to a 1953 brochure I have, Black Ball had offices at: Seattle Insurance Building Port Angeles, Black Ball Terminal Victoria, 814 Wharf Street Nanaimo, Brechin Point Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal and Vancouver, Motor Transportation, 150 Dunsmuir. By 1958, after they dropped the Seattle/Port Angeles leg and moved the Chinook over to Horseshoe Bay, the offices are listed as: Black Ball Ferries (ltd) Victoria: 1006 Government Street Nanaimo: Brechin Road Ferry Dock (General Offices) Horseshoe Bay Puget Sound Navigation Co 1000 2nd Ave (general office) Seattle |

I was surfing some Canadian historical news footage on YouTube, and I came across what looks like Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.....in a 1958 PM John Diefenbaker news clip. The ferry-terminal footage is at the 2:56 mark of the video, and lasts until 3:05. So in those 9-seconds of footage, can anyone tell for certain where this terminal is, and even what the ship is? -------------------- Bonus trivia: - the narration during this 9-second clip is from a 1979 news report, on the Chief's death. Obviously it was before the 1984 election when Brian Mulroney's PC party broke the 1958 record for an election landslide. |

I'm stumped on this one Flug. It looks like Horseshoe Bay bay because of the Islands in the background and the area where the marina is looks the same but it is hard to know.

The Ferry if I'm right is the Kahloke. The Terminal...Judging by current photos of former Blackball Terminals. It's probably Horseshoe Bay.

Sure looks like HSB to me, and the vessel is the Chinook II, aka Sechelt Queen. Remember, at the time (1958) BCF's had not yet been formed, CP was running steam ships, and this has to be either HSB or DPB, or perhaps somewhere on the east coast.
BTW, Fluge, Diefenbaker's 1958 win still stands as the greatest sweep when considering the percentage of seats that he took (208 of 264 available). Mulroney took 211 of 282 available.

Ha-ha... my first instinct was Earl's Cove and Quillayute, but the windows don't match up. Then I thought HSB and Chinook II, but the windows still don't match, so it has to be Kahloke... You'd think I'd be able to recognize my favorite ferry a bit better.
I would love to have sailed aboard that ship.

My feeling is the shot is Horseshoe Bay. Looks quite close to pictures I have seen. The marina was much smaller back then compared to now.

Yup. That was definitely the Chinook II at HSB you saw. The windows of that forward lounge caught my eye immediately.

Here is a still from the video...  I am virtually certain that this is HSB and the vessel is the Chinook II. The wheelhouse windows are hidden behind the upper cross-pieces of the dock. Last word to Evergreen Fleet? |

Yes, I believe that Barnacle's banner pic and the Diefenferry look to be the same ship. I compared the 2, back & forth. The forward lounge windows are a common item. So too is the mast in front of the funnel. |
