November 27, 2012 would have been Mr. Philip Spaulding's 100th birthday. So this forum is celebrating Spaulding-100 during November and this will impact our flagship theme.
The November flagship is Spaulding ships. In order to get a full representation of his various designs and legacies, we will split the nominations and winners into 5 categories:
1) BC Ferries Vs & Bs (ie. the Seven Sisters).
- note: we just did the 4-Vs in September, so if you have to choose betweeen a V and a B in your nominations, go with the B....
2) BC Ferries Sidney & Tsawwassen, and the Coho
3) WSF Jumbo class (Spokane & Walla Walla) and BC Ferries C-Class
4) AMHS: the 3 blue-canoes (Taku, Malaspina, Matanuska) and the other AMHS Spaulding designs (ie Tustumena, EL Bartlett, Aurora, LeConte, Columbia)
5) Other, for any items not listed above (ie. Miller Freeman, Malibu Princess, etc etc)
For an in-progress list of Spaulding designed ships, see this thread
ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=generaltalk&action=display&thread=8417
We are looking for ships that Mr. Spaulding designed, either through his own company, a merged company or in collaboration. The key is that Spaulding (the man) was the in-essence designer, not just a consultant to help with a few details.
- ie. MV International was designed by someone else, but Phil helped with some of the renovation designs. So this is not "His" ship.
- likewise for WSF Jumbo Mark-II, where he was a consultant, but not the primary designer (I'm open to correction on this one, in which case we'd add these to Category-3). Again, I'm looking for in-essence designer, where you look at the ship and can say "Yeah, that sure is Phil's design".
------------
For your nominations, each forum member is allowed to submit up to 2 nominations for each of the above 5 categories. So if someone wanted to max-out, they could do 10 nominations, but they have to fit the above categories, to a maximum of 2 per category.
- I'm assuming that most people won't be submitting 10 items; I ask you to use your discretion and submit items that you have good photos for, but don't just submit to fill a category. But if you have great banner-quality photos for each category, then fill 'er up.
(ie. for me, I have some good 'Burnaby photos, maybe a good Q'Nanaimo photo, and a good Walla Walla photo. And maybe a good Coho photo and Taku photo. Not much else in my collection to offer, so I'll stick with my better stuff.)
For voting, we will have 1 ballot, but we'll ask people to allocate their votes among the various 5 categories. So each person has up to 15 votes that they are allowed. (ie. something like "vote for up to 3 of your favourites for each of the 5 categories"); but we'll finalize this before end of October. Honour system should work for people not overloading a single category with more than the minimum # of votes.
- The ballot will be set out in a logical order, with each of the 5 groups appearing in sequence. (5 separate ballots would be too cumbersome)
For the winners, we will likely choose the "Top x" number of items in each of the 5 categories. The number for each categories depends on ties and will be up to moderator discretion re the exact number.
Regular rules on submission size applies. See here for the rules.

Deadlines:
- for submission: 5:00pm Pacific daylight time on October 30th.
- voting for 24 hours: evening of October 30th until evening of October 31st.
------------------------
PS: a pre-emptive defensive reply:
- Regarding the 5 categories, I realize that there are many different ways to categorize Mr. Spaulding's ships, so I just chose one that seems logical to me. I'm sure that we can all work with this method, whether it would be your best method or not. Let's just play the game....
And a big thanks to all those who regularly (and occasionally) submit photos to these polls; you make this forum a more interesting place. Thanks for doing what you do.
Cheers!
Yours truly,
The Legendary Mill Bay.
