Regarding delivery timing of the new ships:
Here's what the latest official word is, per the August 18, 2016 "Management's Discussion and Analysis Report":
So this means: - Orca by December 31, 2016
- The birds by March 31, 2017
That's just delivery.

I would have gladly volunteered to crew on any of the 'Coastals, to our shores, the transit of the ex-'QPR and maybe the ex- 'Wack' their sunny new homes, crewing on the 'sausage boats' during the Winter months would definitely be a NO-GO for me. The more I look at the propulsion design of these vessels, the more shivers run up my spine. Only one double-sided prop?

I'm curious why you have so many issues with them. They're double ended... that's propulsion redundancy right there. Diesel/Gas electric, so there's power generation redundancy. Is it the fact that it's single screw that bothers you? Virtually every deep sea vessel on the planet has a single screw, as that is the most fuel efficient method of propulsion. No rudder? Azipod electric thrusters have been around for 30+ years and have a very reliable record of service. They're generally oil-flooded (usually a vegtable based biodegradable oil) with a head pressure to prevent water from leaking inward. The voyage would definitely be a rough one, and they are not huge ships by any standard. That said, they will be picking their weather window carefully I am sure. The CI was delivered in February 2008, and while the voyage was by all accounts rough, I don't think it could be called unsafe. Looking at the rough hull shape, these things might be better than the Coastals anyway in any kind of sea.

Looking at how the delivery times on all 3 vessels has slid to the right, I was curious what the penalties are. Back on page 8 is this snipit:
For example, if the vessels are late for delivery, a penalty of approximately $20,000 Canadian per day will be levied after the first 15 days to a maximum of approximately $6 million Canadian. After 180 days, BC Ferries can rescind the contract for a full refund.
All I can say is the on site reps had better be on their toes, because with daily penalties workmanship quality declines as mgmt. pressure increases. Now are there any bets that BCF says take your time and do it right and we won't charge you the penalties? What are your thoughts?

I've heard two reasons why the ships are late. One, they're just not done. Simple enough. Second, I heard and am trying to pursue to get more info, is that there's a regulatory delay with TC. If that's the case - and I should emphasize that's a huge "if" - then I imagine the builder isn't financially responsible. But with the lack of information who knows.

Thanks for sharing those pictures. I know hating on the looks of contemporary ferries is the in thing right now, but I think these are actually sharp looking little boats.

H E R E--------------- Here's the photo of 3 Salish ferries 3 salish in 1 picI saw your comment on the bow visor of the Orca - I think that it may look a little short due to to the angle of the photograph. From the plans that I've seen it is much taller than the impression that photograph leaves me with. Also, thanks for posting - it is interesting to see how the ships are progressing. There's a real sense of the imminence of the newbuilds creeping into daily life on Route 9 - not a day goes by without at least some "water cooler" discussion about the Nanny replacement.

I am anxiously waiting to see pictures of the interior of the vessles. Have they done any sea trials yet? Like any new additions to the BCF Fleet I am excited about new ships.

She's out doing more sea trials today off Gdansk And, each time she goes out, this tracker shows doodles worthy of framing and mounting on a wall of any art museum! I just wonder, after all of these maneuvers, if she will navigate on straight courses on her way to BC?

Those have been displayed for awhile. More to come when she's nearing completion. It would be interesting to see if they install a lid between the pickleforks and over the top of the bow visor at one end for the long voyage to BC? We'll see whenever she starts out.
