I'm still not sure on this one. I still can't say for sure if I can make it, because I have a friend who's trying to plan my day for me. Maybe I should make him go on a ferry trip with me. Then just come by surprise, if you can. Edit: G** d*** it, why can't I cut down on my post editing?!?! O.k.... I should hopefully be there tomorrow, probably for the crowded Oak Bay sailing. I'll probably be spending the night in Burnaby with my friend and then leaving for HSB in the morning. Sadly, I won't be coming from Tsawwassen, though. I would have like to have done an Alberni run over and then return on the Esquimalt.

I'm a little late into the game here as my schedule has been quite unsettled lately, but I'm planning for tomorrow now and am wondering if anyone is coming close to Duke Point Terminal. Karl, when will you be passing near? If you wouldn't mind taking the time to swing by Duke on your way, I'd be happy to help compensate with some gas money; I can get there as early as the first sailing allows, about 0720. It would be nice to take such an early sailing to/fom Gabriola with the morning light coming from the east.

Looks like we have some weather issues--the forecast for tonight is calling for snow, and if that happens, it'll leave me stranded up here in Courtenay.

I'm going to try and give it a go regardless of the weather. It's raining/snowing right now, and it's expected to snow at some point later in the evening here. But usually it will be raining once you get about 10kms South of Town when I come down the hill into Britannia Beach, so I'm not too worried. See you all on the 8:30am sailing to Departure Bay tomorrow morning, guys!

I intend to take the 6:30 am boat to Horseshoe Bay to meet all of you, weather permitting. I'll show my yellow sign near the Passages Gift Shop. It's not my say. The vehicle I'm using isn't mine.

I'll probably be on the 6:30 AM from HBy. I'd also like to be on the 9:30AM from Nanaimo harbour since I'll be away with family after the open house. We'll try to rejoin some of you though on the 5:00 coming home.

I'm off for the Queen of Burnaby a Few Minutes After This Post. And if you're looking for me there, refer to the quote below. If you're there before the open house starts, Just Look for somebody with a Black Shirt that Says "BC Ferries Life on the Coast", a Dogwood BC Ferries Hat, and probably wearing black pants with a black jacket. See You Guys There!

I am just about to leave home, bussing it down to The open house, should be down there just after 12 noon.
FYI: The CR arrived at the assembly warf at 3:45pm Friday afternoon, I did see her while on a transit bus and took 2 pictures from Port Place. (Not posted yet).

I attended today's open-house of the Renaissance, in Nanaimo. There was a large turnout of forum-members, and most of us were able to do the tour together. I arrived at the Assembly-Wharf 1-hour ahead of the start time, and we were allowed to walk onto the lower-car-deck, to queue-up in the auto lanes. After an hour of waiting on the car-deck, the tour started. Everyone has their own favourite thing about a ship, and I happened to really enjoy the Sitka Coffee-Place (panoramic view at one end of Deck-6) and the Coastal-Cafe at the other end. Those 2 places will likely be popular. As with most of our group-trips, meeting the other guys was part of the fun. I got to meet some people that I'd never met before. Also we posed for a few group-photographs: - 1 at the Coastal-Cafe, seated in a row in the cafeteria. - 1 on the car deck, in front of the souvenir-photo backdrop - 1 on the car deck, with Ms Deborah Marshall (who was doing a fine job of answering people's questions). Ms. Marshall gave us some hints on expected in-service date, but for pool-purposes, I'll keep those quiet.... The various stop-points on the tour were staffed by a combination of Fort-Street employees and Route-2 employees. I don't think we learned any great secrets or new facts from any of them. But it was nice to see everything and everyone in-person. There was a big crowd. There will likely be a story of the event in the Nanaimo Daily News, soon. pee-s: The strangest thing I saw (no, not a forum member joke...) were the urinals in the passenger-deck men's room. The shape was different from what we normally see here; these had more of a "space helmet" look to them. Or maybe like a bowling-ball sliced in half & hollowed out. You'll see what I mean, when you visit that room. I call it " Coastal Orb", and they aren't just located at the #1 end of the ship...

A great day for sure!
I just got back, and I'm quite pleased with the Coastal Renaissance. I like the roominess of deck 6 especially with the Sitka Coffee Place and the Coastal Cafe and their large floor to ceiling windows. Those are some great places to watch the scenery. I like deck 5 because of how the layout is similar to that of the V's. It's nice and Cozy with some nice and secluded quiet areas. The engine room is also very well laid out so that will be good for employees working down there.
Unfortunately we were unable to go onto the outside decks but that's no big deal because many of us will get on her again in the near future when she enters service on Route 2 next month.

I headed over on the 6:30AM. Quiet sailing. As we neared Nanaimo, some porpoises crossed our path which was really neat. Took the bus downtown and then headed over to Gabriola with Graham at 9:30. It was sunny in Nanaimo and raining at Descanso Bay. Beautiful lighting on the Coastal Renaissance and a nice dark backdrop for the arriving Queen of Alberni.
Met up with the rest of the group a few minutes after we got back. It was good to meet a lot of you today. The newspaper reporter from the Nanaimo paper came and began his interview and asked us lots of questions about the forum and why we like ferries. Hopefully I made a little sense;) We'll see what comes of it tomorrow or whenever the next paper comes out.
The Coastal Renaissance was impressive. Very roomy and fresh. Nice interior design with coastal photography and nice lighting. We'll see if it gets as crowded as the current ferries. The views from some areas of the passenger deck are really good. Unfortuantely we weren't able to get to the outside decks. Can't wait until she's in service. If it's a weekend, I think some of us will be getting together again for a first-day trip:)
