Thank you for compiling this valuable inventory of lists. It's coaxed me to scan my fleet and profile list from the '90s that I have. I was thinking of scanning my SoBC innauguration booklet just recently actually, and it's great to see it already online and available to the public.

Interesting Documents Indeed. I'm sort of shocked to find in the Ferry Solutions link that Privitization was a possible option before BCFC was privitized. Meanwhile I also like that somebody posted the Island Sky News Clip onto YouTube. Excellent job finding the PDF of the SoBC Book. I saved the file right after a quick skim through it. Nice work, Dane!

hah! I love how he actually calls Gaglardi "Flying Phil" as the famous nickname goes, and the reading itself is quite colourful and interesting. Thanks again, Dane.

Also from Hansard, RE: Naming of the Queen of Coquitlam/Queen of Cowichan as they eventually would be titled:
PROCEDURE IN NAMING
NEW FERRIES
MR. WALLACE: Mr. Speaker, I'd like to ask the admiral of fleets a simple question: as the fleet continues to enlarge and with the acquisition of the latest new vessel, could he tell the House what procedure there is in choosing a new name for the new vessels?
HON. MR. STRACHAN: There is the same procedure as in the past. You look at the names; you look at municipalities that are in the area of the sea coast, and you name them after those.
MR. WALLACE: Supplementary, Mr. Speaker. I'm very interested in that answer. I wonder if the
[ Page 3991 ]
Minister or the admiral could tell the House if, in his deliberations recently, the title "Queen of Oak Bay" was considered. (Laughter.) That's a serious question, Mr. Speaker. I want to know that at least it was given consideration - unfavourable consideration, but consideration.
HON. MR. STRACHAN: The answer is yes. But Oak Bay is a small municipality and this is a jumbo ship. We thought we'd need a larger municipality. (Laughter.)
MR. WALLACE: Waffle, waffle, waffle.
MR. J.R. CHABOT (Columbia River): A supplementary question to the Minister: have you considered the community within my constituency called Skookumchuck as well? (Laughter.)
AN HON. MEMBER: Queen of Kinbasket.
MRS. JORDAN: Just listening to the Member for Oak Bay and the Minister, Mr. Speaker, did you ever hear that nursery rhyme - "Rub-a-dub, two admirals in a tub"?
MR. SPEAKER: That question is improper.

Don Lockstead (former Powell River MLA, and also former Mayor) has some great ferry debate items from Hansard. I've enjoyed reading his comments before, a year or so ago when I was on a Hansard-kick. It's time-consuming to read, but it's a great window into that time in history. Likely more exciting to read than BCFS's board-meeting minutes..... ;D

I am I started reading BC Ferries related Hansard two days ago at 1958, and I am at 1987 now. It's very interesting, and adds some light to questions I had long had in the "what were they thinking?" catagory, or "why would that be done?" Almost every debate involves him. My favourite so far is the debate over the renaming of the Queen of Surrey (1); the MLA for Surrey's wife, Mrs. Hall, had rechristined the Stena Danica as the Queen of Surrey so he took great offense to the new title, Queen of the North. There was also a debate about the quality of chicken strips being served...

I remember seeing the SuzyQ at HB but never sailed on her. I don't remember when it was. Just noticed that it looked very different from all the Spauldings and quite old fashioned looking. Cool reading the whole background although I had known parts of it. I didn't know she was orginally modified at Port Weller Dry Docks.

That last report has the retirement dates for all vessels leaving by 2021, and it's interesting to see how things have changed since they posted the expected dates five years ago. The Howe Sound Queen has got the longest extension, from 2013 to 2020, and most have had three to five years added to their lives. Drat, the Kahloke is going to be around until 2020.
Funny to see 'before' and 'after' pictures of the Sidney terminal. The 'after' photo has a new sign, and a flower box added. Yup, that'll get those Yanks flocking to the Island.

I have re-started the business of going through my brother's collection of historical documents related to BCF. I will scan the more interesting ones that I find, and post copies to my photobucket site, with 800 px wide versions shown here. The first entry is a Mark Wilson piece from The Province newspaper, of December 1991 re the QoNWM's vibration 'issues'. DOT collectionA larger version can be found on the 'Seven Sisters' album on my photobucket site.
