EDIT: This thread is for any models or drawings of ferries...DUM-DA-DA-DUM!!! I have decided to start an ongoing project: 3D ferry modeling! I create my models on Google SketchUp, and I usually base them loosely on real ferries. My first project is the 'M/V Hartley Bay Queen', named after the community who's residents were the first responders to the Queen of the North's sinking in 2006. This boat is loosely based on the MV Tenaka and the MV Tachek. I will post photos of my progress, and of the completed model. If you wish to see the photos before they get here, just add me on foozbok, and check out my photo album: 'My BC Ferries Obsession'Day 1: Today I started the model. I built the hull and most of the exterior features. This craft was originally supposed to have a pointed bow like the NorEx, but it had to be chopped due to technical difficulties in the sunken vehicle deck. The funnel is taking me the longest to build, because of the awkward shape. Any questions, just ask. Enjoy!

Now shouldn't something named after Hartley Bay be bigger? As in something that can operate on the North Coast?
Personally I think if a ship is named after somewhere, she should serve the area of her namesake.

okay, before this was moved, John H said: 'Might look a bit better with two funnels;) To make it harder. '
My response: I don't actually like the two funnel appearance when they are side by side. I only like multiple funnels in cases like the late sunshine coast queen, or Titanic.
My reponse to Coastal Skier: This ferry's schedule would be as such:
Sunday, 8am: Leave Port Hardy Later that day: Arrive Hartley Bay
Tuesday, 8am: Leave Hartley Bay Later that day: Arrive Prince Rupert
Thursday, 8am: Leave Prince Rupert Later that day: Arrive Hartley Bay
Saturday, 8am: Leave Hartley Bay Later that day: Arrive Port Hardy -LOOP-
In the final model, you will notice a place for staterooms on either side of the vehicle deck, and though it is about the same length as the Tachek and Tenaka, It has more passenger space, and will have room for a small cafeteria

Actually, Now that I looked at some BCF photos, I realized that it is more like a 4-way cross: Nicola/Tachek/Tenaka/Quadra Queen II

This ferry's schedule would be as such: Sunday, 8am: Leave Port Hardy Later that day: Arrive Hartley Bay Saturday, 8am: Leave Hartley Bay Later that day: Arrive Port Hardy For a small ship like Tenaka / Tachek, and especially Nicola, the service speed would likely be 10 knots. It takes the Chilliwack 12 hours to go from Port Hardy to Bella Bella at her 10 knot speed, so your model ferry will likely take 24-30 hours to go from Port Hardy to Hartley Bay. But what a ride it would be.....

no. It's an L-class vessel. Note: Just for you, my next vessel will be called 'Spirit of Mill Bay', and you can some design input in it. (When I say you, I mean the member this new ship will be named after)

Another day 1 photo, but this time I have added some of the permanent windows, the stacks coming out of the funnel, and I lifted it out of drydock and into a small pool of water

notice the slugs have been put on the funnel, and the front of the ship. All it needs now is a mast, and some deck furniture, and I'm done!

The Hartley Bay Queen is officially complete! Here is a gallery of photos: Top floor: Bridge Next one down: Upper lounge Next: Cafeteria/main lounge Next: Staterooms and vehicle deck A Front view of the completed Hartley bay Queen Mast, complete with radar and antennae Port side view of the HBQ Main sundeck, with lounge chairs and lounging bins Rear view at vehicle deck level Upper sundeck and funnel. The upper sundeck has five lounging bins. The windows on the top are the back of the bridge I finished it much faster than I thought I would. I will start my next model either today or tomorrow: the 'Spirit of Mill Bay', named after one of our valued members

I build the ferries from the perspective of a frequent rider. I design them the way that i would feel most comforable riding. This ferry is actually quite small, just a bit bigger than Quadra Queen 2, but it has the feel of at least a century class ship since there is so much deckspace on so many levels

I also built it so that in the future, the indoor passenger space can be expanded sternward without lengthening the boat. It would make the main sundeck smaller, but that space loss would be compromised by a new equal amount of space on the roof of the new interior area.

I like the lounge chairs at the stern! Time for a beer! ;D You would say that, after all. This isn't a ferry, it's obviously a cruise ship. Maybe even a luxury fishing vacation lodge. I'd be concerned that with all those separate lounges and exterior passenger spaces, her crewing requirements will go through the roof.

It's amentities are: Deck 1: Engine room: None Deck 2: Vehicle deck: staterooms, common washroomoutside deck accessed from main sundeck, foot passenger entry Deck 3: Main passenger deck: sundeck, lounge chairs, lounge bins, interior lounge space, cafeteria, restrooms Deck4: Upper passenger deck: sundeck, lounge bins, interior lounge Deck 5: Bridge: None Not much of a cruise ship, if u ask me..

Okay: the Hartley Bay is going into drydock for the first time tonight. She'll be out sometime in the next 4 days. Renos will be as such: extension of ship in front of Bridge by approximatly 7.5 metres. Addition of Crane for cargo Installation of one liferaft installation of three eco-friendly power generators: 2 Solar panels on roof of bridge, 1 windmill generator on top of bridge, 1 mini-hydro-electric generator underneath vessel

Okay. I decided to cut renos short. I installed the liferaft, the crane, and painted the name of the vessel. Unfortunatly, I was unable to extend the boat. I got to the halfway point, then I realized it was virtually impossible to extend it forwards due to the awkward shape of the bow.

I have started construction of my next new vessel: the Spirit of Mill Bay, named after one of our valued forum members. I've been working on it since last night, and it's starting to take shape. It's a minor vessel about the same size as the QoCapilano, i guess. Here are some construction photos: Spirit of Mill Bay: Day 1 of Construction: Only the Hull Spirit of Mill Bay: Day 2 of construction: Main structures complete
