The North Coast region experienced a severe wind storm yesterday that led to this situation in Prince Rupert, as well as wide spread power outages many of which are yet to be rectified. The region affected includes Haida Gwaii and inland areas (Terrace, Kitimat, etc.). Apparently, at 4:00 PM yesterday, the NorEx was arriving from Port Hardy at the Fairview Terminal. It experienced severe difficulty attempting to dock and some damage was done to shore structures. There is no mention of damage to the ship itself. The ship's master aborted the docking, electing to shelter in the harbour before finally getting successfully into the birth seven hours late at 11:00 PM. The Sunday evening sailing to Skidegate was supposed to be leaving at that time but was cancelled as per the 'Service Notice' reproduced above. I suspect that it would have been cancelled anyways due to sea conditions in Hecate Strait. This evening's sailing should be a go, providing that berthing structure damage at the Rupert Terminal don't complicate matters further. Most of my info comes from the CBC Daybreak North program from this morning. They had an interview with Deborah Marshall. There is nothing on their website re this story, however.

And why is this not good??? I dont think the Cumberland has been out for refit yet this year. This is the time to do it. Once again we will have the two sisters on route 5. And I take it the Snack Bar on the Bowen Queen will be open so it really isent a downgrade in service except for the smaller ship.

She carries less vehicles of course, but the biggest problem is the Commercial traffic, and that they can only use the Center lane. The last time the Cumberland went for refit was October of 2010 for the interior upgrade. I can remember a couple of occassions two years ago where the Skeena had to make a stop at Pender Island during the last run of the day to Salt Spring to help out with the overload that was left behind by the Bowen Queen at Swartz Bay on Friday nights.

I am on the Cumberland right now nearing Saturna and we left two cars behind at Swartz Bay I would assume they were bound for Pender as that is where the majority of the traffic got off! I don't get why Pender is so popular! It ain't my fav! They were using the platform decks too!

There's no service notice yet, although there was a mention on Twitter about this but the Spirit of British Columbia is still holding in dock at Swartz Bay. This is likely due to the forecasted winds that were supposed to show up about 9 or 10 hours ago, but only just showed up this morning. Coastal Celebration is still sailing along strongly.
The only other vessels effected so far are the Burnaby and Tachek, however they're supposed to be resuming service now.

One weather forecast is predicting winds gusting from 60 to 80 knots (144 km/h) for tonight in the Straight of Georgia. Environment Canada is calling for 45 knot winds. Service disruptions or rough crossings possible.

It looks like the Nanaimo left Long Harbour this afternoon but isent making the trip across the strait according to the vessel tracking right now she is going into Village Bay. Might as well cancel the 6pm as the New West would have to deadhead back to Tsawwassen anyways I dont think they would want to get stuck at Swartz Bay for the night.

I just came across on the 3:00pm Queen of Oak Bay from Horseshoe Bay. I watched the conditions deteriorate the further we got from Vancouver. The ol Oak Bay was rolling around pretty good, but we made it across just fine.

It looks like the Celebration is the only boat on route 1 right now. She left Swartz Bay at 7:41pm. The SOBC is still holding at Tsawwassen. My aunt and uncle are on the Celebration right now which I think they will be in for a bumpy ride.

According to Twitter the Queen of Nanaimo bound for Tsawwassen offloaded at Galiano and it said also on Twitter the Cumberland is 35 mins late due to transfers. Probably from the Nanimo I would assume?

Twitter a mix of people complaining about lack of information at DPB, HSB, SWB, and TSA, a few people on the CC or Alberni saying the ride is rough, and a few meatheads calling BCFS cowards for not sailing. :eyeroll:

SOBC is loading to sail.
Alberni is running but is sailing in circles off TSA until the wind dies down.
CC is heading for berth #3 at TSA.
Either SOBC or the CC will need to move for the Alberni to dock tonight.

Queen of Alberni has turned back to Tsawwassen. That's not good. Alberni never docked at TSA to unload the 5:45pm sailing from Duke Point. It's been sailing in circles waiting for better conditions.
