Drive by shooting ... ferry photo shooting that is... I left Vancouver heading north via the Sea-to-Sky Hwy late Tuesday afternoon (May 8th). Passing Horseshoe Bay, just after 5 pm, I was rewarded with not one but 2 'C's passing by. Q of Surrey bound for HSBQ of Surrey bound for HSB & Q of Cowichan outbound for NanaimoI am now back home after much driving and a few stops for rail photos en route.

An incident at Horseshoe Bay, early 1985. The Queen of Surrey entered the harbour, going a great deal faster than she should have been. A ferry employee later told us that he had been shouting at us to get back out of the way, but in the din of engine noise and blaring ship's whistle, we hadn't heard. The 'Surrey bashed the dock, and then immediately reversed, and, in this photo, raced at high speed out of the harbour. I don't believe anyone was injured, but there was considerable damage to the dock, the car deck was strewn with splintered wood, and you can see some damage to the ferry above the lower car deck, center.

I found another little album! Back on Friday July 29, 1988 I decided to devote an entire day to riding on all 5 C-Class ships. That season, the ship assignments were as follows: #1 DB-Queen of Surrey #2 DB-Queen of Alberni #1 HSB-Queen of Oak Bay (some things never change ;D) #2 HSB-Queen of Coquitlam #1 Langdale-Queen of Cowichan ======== Of course I waited 'til the 9:00PM sailing so I could ride on the Surrey, thus completing my C-class marathon. BTW, it always bugged me that the letter "N" in "Queen" was upsidedown:

It's certainly refreshing (for myself at least) to see that old interior of the Queen of Surrey again. I don't know why, but I always really liked that interior design of the C's, and still do. Also, to think its been 6 years since the last time I was on the Oak Bay before her MLU, which also turned out to be the last time to ride aboard a C-Class that still had that interior, I can still spot the differences between the Surrey and Oak Bay in those pics.
*Some things that stick out in my mind is the organization of the seating. The seats are in a more socialable layout, with each row of seats facing each other.
*The nameboard was a little more fancy on the Surrey, compared to the Oak Bay who just had decals for a nameboard.
*The arcade was setup "Queen of Coquitlam style", with all the arcade machines out in the open, near the giftshop/snack bar. The Oak Bay had a seperate room for the arcade....and I'm trying to think of where it was before the MLU....Something tells me it was in one of the mid ship lounges. Anyone else remember?
*The location of the bus ticket booth was located in pretty much the same spot it is today on those ships, on the Oak Bay. Again, I'm trying to think if that's where it was....But I know it wasn't in the same spot as on the Surrey.
Fun stuff to think back to!

The Oak Bay had a seperate room for the arcade....and I'm trying to think of where it was before the MLU....Something tells me it was in one of the mid ship lounges. Anyone else remember? When the Oak Bay and the Surrey originally entered service, they both had the identical open video game areas. It wasn't until a few years later that the Oak Bay had an enclosed video game room created in one of the midship lounges (on the starboard side I believe). Now my memories on this are REAL fuzzy, but it involved some crew only area or facility being relocated from the passenger deck to somewhere else on the ship to make room for the new arcade. I remember the Surrey's crews telling me the same change would be made to her. However when she came out of her next refit, there was no arcade. I was told whatever changes were made to the Oak Bay to enable the relocation of the video games created some unforseen problems and the decision was made to not do the same on the Surrey.

Here's what happens when you try to take a 7-picture 180-degree pano of a ferry: ========= Mountains in sunlight, ferry in shadows:

Thanks for those photos, Scott. I would never have thought that after travelling on her regularly when she was a Nanaimo-based ship in the '80's that seeing pics of her serving Departure Bay would seem so unique! BTW, was it a Langdale crew on board her for that trip?

I had a 2 hour lay-over at Horseshoe Bay in the evening on 9/21/2010, and so I had opportunity to see the Queen of Surrey come & go, a couple of times. - I like the partially-opened door. - I love this time of evening for doing photography. - my attempts at panning. It turned out to be a reverse pan, with the background in-focus. I think it looks funny. - "the moment before impact, and you turn to just see a blur. It's too late to move out of the way...". - The Surrey and Capilano at HSB.

The Queen of Surrey approaching Langdale for the 6:30 sailing to Horseshoe Bay on November 21st, 2010: You can see the silhouettes of the Coast Mountains in the background, looking suspiciously like the Golden Ears... And almost there. Sorry for the blurriness in that first one. I took about 70 pictures, sorted through them, and these were the only suitable two for posting. All the others were even more blurry. A question, do they always use the searchlight during nighttime dockings?
