Is there an announcement on every WSF sailing about safety? It's been three or four years since I've travelled on our southern neighbor's ships, and I don't recall if there was a parallel to the BC Ferries recordings. The BC Ferries announcements have gotten longer, and in my opinion, are really annoying. Even on the cable barge to Denman Island, you are warned of the dangers of doorsills, wet decks, wind, stairs, and luggage improperly stored under seats. I guess BC Ferries consulted their lawyers about every conceivable danger, and tailored the messages accordingly. I don't even like the voice used, but that's probably overly curmudgeonly of me. So... are WSF passengers warned of all the awful things that can happen to you on a twenty minute sailing, every time you ride the boats? Yes, Every vessel/sailing has the safety announcement

They been upgrading alot of the boats with 5 bladed props so idk if she actually got a 5 bladed prop yet She has, and that is why she has been vibrating so much. I have been told that she is going to have the five blade propeller replaced with a four blade while she's out for maintenance. She's coming back on Tuesday

Neat shots of some of the older ships (Nanaimo, Vancouver) As well as the Spirit, Coastal Renaissance and Queen of Capilano. Please note the "Fake" horn sounds This has to be the BEST BCF i have ever seen!!!!!

I was at the Chimacum event today with my wife, and was quite disappointed in how the pilothouse tours were conducted. 1.) The pilot house tours apparently required ID, something that was not required on the open house I took of the Salish back in 2012. I can understand a little security, but for my wife - who accidentally left her ID back in the rig eight blocks away in a parking garage - it was a huge inconvenience and left her unable to take that part of the experience in. To me, it was an unnecessary restriction. 2.) You had to sign up for them on a 'first-come/first-served' basis and were assigned a certain time to take part. Whatever happened to the 'Take access at your own time" kind of approach the previous open houses have done? 3.) The biggest gripe, is that photography was forbidden in the pilothouse. Everyone there said 'No photography in the pilothouse" and cited a Coast Guard regulation for the reason why. I find that to be a little ridiculous. For one, if you're gonna tell people "NO", at least have the common sense to cite the rule first, instead of saying "NO" just for the sake of saying it - which is how I felt things were being executed. I also found that to be the biggest disappointment as the crown jewel of a new vessel tour is being able to tour all aspects of pilothouse operation and to be able to take those memories home by way of a few photos. Visitors weren't even allowed near the controls in this one. On the open houses of the KDT - namely the Salish - I was able to have an operators' eye view of things. I thought it was a ridiculous way to run things and quite frankly ruined my experience. As Benjamin Franklin - one of this country's greatest founding fathers - wisely stated, those who are willing to give up a bit of liberty for the sake of security, deserve neither. Frankly the way WSDOT set this tour up was a huge failure. Especially since the Supreme Court has ruled on a number of occasions that photography of public infrastructure isn't to be infringed in any manner. As a 3D modeler it would've been fantastic to come home with some reference material for an accurate 3D pilotable model in Flight Simulator. As a stepfather, it would've also been especially fantastic to be able to show the technology in that pilothouse to my 10-year old stepson by way of photos, who wasn't with us today. Maybe the next open house will be less restrictive. This one left a sour taste in my mouth. Even though i didn't go, that kind of makes me think that the WSF system is getting stricter, along with the coast guard

Coho horn goes up there with the Queen of Nanaimo, seems to be like the Walla Walla's except a two toner. The Walla Walla's is supposed to be a two-tone horn (B-flat major fifth, but who's counting?); have they changed out the whistles or got a bird nesting in one of the apertures? ;D The Wallys no.1 end whistle is now a B-flat major fifth, here is a few links

Let's pay a visit to the whistle department. I received a message from WSF recently and have learned that the air horn whistles that will be installed aboard these new ferries will be: Kahlenberg model D3-261 what whistle does the Jumbo M2's and Olympics use I found two YouTube videos of about the same whistles mounted on a car.

It would be nice if BC Ferries did to their ships like WSF do by applying a gold ribbon on their funnels to denote 50 years of service. Seconded. like the Yakima and Hyak WSF

Now that I have a new video camera, I'll start to rebuild my collection of horn recordings.... Here's my speech on the horns: In my opinion, the Ferry horn is the next thing in line, after shape, that adds character to the Ferry. Like the variety of shapes and sizes of all the Ferries in the Fleet, there is a variety of horns amongst them as well. For example, comparing the electric one tone megaphone that the Spirits have, to the classic 3 note Airchime horns on the Queen of Vancouver. When people think of a BC Ferry, I bet most people play that classic 3 tone chord in their mind. When AM 730 does the Ferry Conditions, they play the classic stereotypical 3 tone Ferry horn at the begininning of the segment. I can even remember when I was a little younger, when Check TV was still around, they would play the 3 tone chord during one of their advertisements. So why do I care about this sort of thing? Well, knowing that the older boats are slowly starting to be retired, and have grown up hearing the horn everytime I'd take a Ferry, I've grown some sort of attachment to them. Also the fact that when these horns were first manufactured, someone spent the time and effort to fine tune these horns to sound perfect. Now some of these horns 40 years later are starting to start kind of...off. When onboard the Queen of Vancouver these days, I can hear a blast of air coming from the pipes, like theres a leaky valve somewhere, which screws the chord up. At one point, only one of two of the Queen of Esquimalts horns was working. Recently they have fixed that. Anyways, I'd like to share with all of you, the sounds of our fleet. Queen of Vancouver, sounding her horn as she passes Bellhouse Park, Galiano Island. ferryman.sitesled.com/horns/vanact.wavQueen of Saanich, sounding her horn at 10:45pm, as she passes Bellhouse Park, Galiano Island. Heard from Seal Bay, beside Miners Bay on Mayne Island. ferryman.sitesled.com/horns/saanact.wavQueen of Esquimalt, sounding her horn upon departure at Langdale. ferryman.sitesled.com/horns/esqlang.wavQueen of Nanaimo, sounding her horn in Active Pass, as she's about to pass Helen Point, Mayne Island. ferryman.sitesled.com/horns/nanact.wavJust for fun, all 3 V's sounding their horn in a sequence. The 1st is the Vancouver, 2nd is the Saanich, and 3rd is the Esquimalt. ferryman.sitesled.com/horns/vansaanesq.wavMore to come in the next few weeks! the websites do not work?
