How much did BCF dump into QoNW in 2008, when she was 44 years of age? Call me delusional, but I see a very unique and cost effective opportunity in Carrier Princess. I may be way off in my estimate, but I'd say for around $20 million, BCF could have a fully refurbished and modified vessel that would be a perfect supplementary/relief ship for all major routes. I wonder what her new name would be? Hi delusional!

So does anyone know the real reason WSF got rid of the metal gates on the front of the ferries like Jumbos, Supers, Issaquah classes? They took them of and went to chains, and now days they use nylon nets. I would just think the gates would easier and not need replacing near as often as the nets. What do you mean by "Gates?" gate ɡāt/Submit noun plural noun: gates 1.A hinged barrier used to close an opening in a wall, fence, or hedge. synonyms: gateway, doorway, entrance, entryway

Unless I got up too early this morning, I'm not following 'Maine's' use of the scrambled English in his recent post above. The aforementioned aside, I agree with 'WettCoast''s assessment of BCFS's current 'business practices' that would appear to be somewhat anti-local in terms of having their fleet serviced here other than emergency repairs and drydocking. Local yards have not done a helluva lot lately to greatly enamour themselves to BCFS, so not surprising BCFS's current position.I will help you simplify my previous post. The link shows a picture if the Queen of Chilliwack in her new expo paint work while in route to BC.
My name is Mayne not Maine as in Mayne island.
The wording of previously enjoyed = used boat
The other boat that we purchased from Grease is the Northern Adventurer.
And the comment that our yards will be receiving more than enough work is referencing to the track record of our other USED boat from Grease (the Northern Adventurer)
I hope this helps you

Where the painting of the ship took place is not really the big issue. BC Ferries has had in its history 4 ships purchased second hand from overseas, plus two others that came from Quebec. The most recent two, purchased by the 'new' BC Ferries, were painted overseas prior to delivery. The earlier ships were mostly painted here. Dane says that he has photos/documentation with regard to the Basto. I wouldn't mind seeing that. The real issue is the systematic way that the new (post 2003) BC Ferries has gone out of its way to have work done - both new builds & repair/upgrades - overseas. The standard answer is "our yards don't have the capacity", and that may be true, but just how did our capacity to build & maintain ships whither to the extent that it has? Today, we can't build even little vessels here and larger upgrades are now being sent overseas. Where we paint a vessel is not in & of itself a big deal, just a piece of a much bigger issue. And talking about it on this forum ought to be okay. www.faktaomfartyg.se/queen_of_chilliwack_1978_b_1.htmAnd if our new Greek ferry is as good as our other previously enjoyed greek boat I think or yards will get more then enough work

An assortment of ship horns, heard on August 31, 2017 - Queen of New Westminster's horn is in poor shape (video) poor ol' Westie needs some vocal lessons! but she still sounds great, I think. not quite as melodic as the 'Nan or the 'Van but still pretty nice. speaking of - I heard from some other ferry fans at the Nanaimo's decommissioning that both her own and the Vancouver's Airchimes have been saved. can anyone confirm this? -qod Yes I can confirm that the Nanaimos Airchimes have been saved. As for the Vancouvers I do not know.

From the collection of my brother, David mrdot ... This has been scanned this evening from an 8x10 print in David's collection. The photographer may have been David; I have to ask him .... I also can only guess at the date & location, though I have a hunch that it was later in the Expo livery era (c2000) and was taken during one of those periods when this vessel was covering for the Q Nanaimo during a refit. The location may be off Sturdies Bay. If anyone has an idea feel free to let me know. Queen of Tsawwassen in SGI during the era of the Dogwood-Expo livery 1987-2002 Mr DOT collection by mrdot., on FlickrIf I was a betting man I would also go with this being taken from Sturdies Bay. The background looks very Mayne Islandish

So... what are peoples' impressions of the storm tonight? Here on Hornby, the winds howled from 7:00 until 8:30, and that was it. BC Ferries cancelled all service on the three major cross-strait routes after 3:00. I know that the wind was considerable in the southern strait in the late afternoon; right now it's gusting to 56k at Vancouver, and only 35 at Nanaimo, surely, weather that you would expect the ferries to be able to get through.
Were their customers the victims of an alarmist forecast? Ask Karl about the challenges that the SOBC had trying to dock at TWS on her 1:00 sailing, then ask if it was justified. They are still paying for crew and all other overhead of the existence of the company with zero income at the far box. Yes they "back in the good old days" would probably sailed but times change and situations change so it is what it is, and using the word victims is just a little extreme

Route 3's final sailing at 2145h (2220h officially) from HSB is full. BCF seriously missed the boat by not having the Cowichan do a round trip on this route. WOW! Not knowing the crewing situation and true loads they suck so bad! Thanks for the play by play that would be so hard to figure out.

Voting is over. Here are the winners - 6 total: 1st: #5 2nd place tie: #6, 13, 26 5th place: #20 6th place: #3 Thanks to everyone who submitted, and to all those who voted. We had a good turnout this time Can't really dispute what voters have chosen but we are going to see a whole lot of the Burnaby over the next two months, as three of the six winners are of her. Of the three others, one is the Burnaby's almost identical twin, the Nanaimo. Perhaps you should include in the rotation the three photos that finished in 7th, just to increase the variety, and add a few more from WSF's. I would have been happy if one of the AHMS photos was in there too, but the voters have chosen otherwise. Sorry but even as you have said the have chosen, so I am not really understanding the point of your post other then to complain that what you want to see was not what was chosen.

It has been another busy Friday for the long weekend. Routes 1 and 30 from TSA have had 3 waits since 930h this morning. The three waits continued until 1800h with the final sailings from TSA at 50% and 80% capicity respectively. It has been much quieter from SWB and Duke Point than it was yesterday, a maximum of one wait at those terminals. The Alberni is about 30 minutes behind schedule and the Spirit vessels are 20-25 minutes behind and have been all week.
Route 2 has had one to two waits from HSB all day and a maximum of one wait from Dep. Bay. The Cowichan is doing a MD round trip at 2105h and 2305h. The 2305h sailing is already at 40% capacity!
Route 3 had two waits from HSB all morning and continued with one wait until the 1835h sailing.
So did BC Ferries miss the boat today or not so much??

Here's my compilation video of ship horn soundings at Active Pass, heard on July 12 & 13, 2016 during my visit at Galiano Island cemetery. Is it really bad that with the exception of the Spirits I can tell you exactly what vessel was sounding its horn???

True. A trivial legacy to a family destroyed back in 1992. Refresh my memory... Nemetz lights? A family destroyed in 1992? Queen of New West leaving dock while still loading. The family from Albertas van plunged into the water, I can not remember if they all died or not.

Yes, it worked out that way for the Coastal Triplets. And I can't remember if it was the same waiver for the NorEx. I think all the German & now Polish new builds were the recipients of this 'gift' from the feds, as was the second (or 3rd?) hand NorAd. It appears that all levels of government really don't care whether or not we maintain a viable ship-building capacity in this country. If I had some say in this I might go so far as to grant this 'gift', but only with strings attached such as a requirement for BCFS to reverse cuts in service to dependant coastal communities (e.g. Haida Gwaii & Central Coast), and some fare relief as well. Yes, all the local ship yards that bid on building the three ships would have been more then capable, ya they would be late, probably over budget and of much poorer quality, but I am sure they would float.....Island Sky.... O wait the only ship yard that was left on the short list pulled out. The magic save the country government that is giving away the farm putting us farther in debt gives BC Ferries a brake and still people find a way to complain.

SOBC is now 30 mins behind! According to Siitech she was using berth 3 at Tsawwassen! Well Karl if you ever have a medical emergency on a ship you make dam sure they don't turn that boat around for you. ?

Murphy's Law strikes again with the SOVI being out of service for the Spring Break weekend. No, Mother Nature strikes again and she can kick the ferries rear when ever she feels like it.

No. Besides the tight timing, there's also the issue of needing to get to the toll booth to buy a ticket for the Nanaimo, and then back down to the ship. It might work, but there is no guarantee. You need to be prepared to miss that sailing. I've done it successfully a couple times but you need to run up a steep hill to get to the toll booth and then run down the hill again. We have also encountered it unsuccessfully, recall MileagePhoto waving to us from the Mayne as we sailed away on the Nanaimo?? LOL

A nice little footnote to the ' Chilliwack's departure is from the latest edition of Western Mariner magazine, which reports that when she left Deas on her long voyage south, she sounded her horn, and was saluted in turn by her sisters in the berths. Was anyone present who can confirm this? Yes I can confirm, as the Chilliwack past the other ships in deas the New west was blasting her horn as well as the Wack.

This is a video I recorded from Shaw to Orcas onboard the Klahowya on September 12, 2015. This was recorded from the area between the Klahowya's pickleforks sped up 32x. Might I suggest a tripod next time

Now thinking of VW diesels. Would a Cat C 18 with 22% more output need more urine/ blue in the exhaust system to stay clean enough?? I am trying to come up with a proactive solution here. Not 100% but I am fairly sure they don't run blue as its an "off road" engine and "off road" engines are still not at the same emissions standards as highway engins.

Thanks Nick. Reducing the output is one thing, increasing it to reach certain speeds another. With TC set to cancel many exemptions and to apply Sect. 224 of the MPR to cable ferries in the near future the REAL output is of interest. I used data from marinetraffic.com to draw some graphs of their runs up to top speed of 8.5kts ( there were not that many ), and the much steeper acceleration curve ( when compared to runs peaking at 7.5kts ) seems to indicate that much more torque was available. Where might that have come from?? At this stage, I would not be surprised if BCF turns a blind eye to the delivery of some requirements by Seaspan, just to get this mess over with. With the increase of the tuning this gets this engine closer to the smallest version that Cat puts out in its stock form. This creates a large bump in the torque output to 1629lb-ft (increasing horsepower=more torque) now if someone wants they can figure fuel consumption numbers. At max RPM (1800) it consumes 24.5 Gph at 1500 (peak torque) its at 14.3Gph. At what should be the optimum once at speed (1200rpm) it drops to 7.4 Gph and if we really want detail idle (600rpm) 1.4 Gph.

First of all, I'm wondering how many forum members have actually had dinner on the 'Cap. I think I might be part of a fairly exclusive group. The dining room didn't have a lot of selections left on the 6:20pm back to Horseshoe Bay, so I had an egg, ham, and hash brown wrap... I know, more breakfasty than dinner, but it was actually pretty palatable- much superior to the nuked mcmuffin type abortion I had for breakfast on the Island Sky some time back.
Also can't help wondering, which maybe I've done before, why Bowen gets such service compared to Salt Spring. The 'Capilano now carries the same number of cars as the Skeena Queen, thanks to the multi-million dollar upgrade earlier this year. I believe the crew complement is also similar. Yet Bowenites get a decent snack bar, newspapers, two ATMs, plus snack and beverage machines. Not to mention the quiet, carpeted lounge with upholstered seats. The Skeena has hard plastic seats in very loud car deck lounges, and vending machines. Oh, and the Fulford route is almost twice as long. So what gives? Could it have something to do with Bowen being the only island served by BC Ferries where the average household income is above the provincial average? No it's see rush hour because it's part of Metro Vancouver so people who are heading from or going to Vancouver need snacks and coffee in the Morning on the sailing. While I disagree with the notion that this is because the people on Bowen being higher then average pay, but more those who cry the loudest get what they want as route 8 was given that exact ship and they lost there minds. And Mr Cheese there's a tremendous amount of people that commute every day to and from Saltspring they just don't complain.

The opening of the bow door of the Northern Expedition, seen from inside. - 11:15pm on August 7, 2015. ....the opening followed an approximate 10 minute delay with problems (my guess) with an electrical switch panel. - it wasn't as bad as the NorAd's 2007 multi-hour delay when her door got stuck.
