Friday afternoon and Murphy's Law strikes again!
The Queen of Surrey had mechanical problems after its 1525h departure from Langdale. It docked at HSB and never made its return trip. The Queen of Coquitlam took over for the remainder of the day and will do the 620h departure on Saturday morning.
www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=917504
Update as of 8:32 pm:
Please be advised that the Queen of Coquitlam will sail in place of the Queen of Surrey due to mechanical difficulties.
*Saturday August 8th 2015:
Please be advised that the 7:55 am exiting Langdale will be cancelled.
Further updates will be provided after 8:30 am.
Its a C-Class, what do you expect.

Is their something I missed I wasn't aware the Tenaka was up for sale?? Wow she sure the hell would be better suited for Discovery Coast than Nimpkish that's for sure....her vehicle capacity is bigger and that would make a world of difference, also her passenger lounge is bigger too What are your sources on this? I have seen nothing from BC ferries that she is for sale.

Just throwing this out there, everyone who works on the Coastal class vessels hate them. The running gear was designed and built by a company which basically said We've never done this before, but sure we'll give it a shot... hence the horrid shake the ship apart vibration. This company wasn't the first or 2nd choice of the Ferries, but they couldn't buy their way into the construction line up of the first 2 companies. Am I the only one who hasn't noticed any particular vibration issue on the Coastals? To me the Coastals are the smoothest ships we have, mind you I grew up on the QOTWS and Nanny so it's doesn't take much to impress me.

Bowen Island doesn't use a large ferry and has nothing to do with this thread. Living on a remote island is a choice not a necessity and the taxpayers of B.C. should not be paying for rich people's transportation. Period. Judging by your handle and your reaction to my post, you must be one of the self entitled people I'm guessing on Mayne Island? They can add an extra sailing here and there from Tsawassen or Swartz bay when needed-they usually have a spare large vessel hanging around. Well then, if someone could let my bank know I am rich that would be fantastic. I think based on your response you have no real knowledge on the ferry system, try looking at ridership levels, the Bowen remark was just as relevant, a slightly smaller ship, more sailings and requires more subsidies. If you feel you need to come on this fourm and make judgements in witch you know nothing about I am going to suggest you go elsewhere.

Why not eliminate this route altogether? People whom choose to live on remote islands can make their way to Swartz Bay on the little ferry that serves their island. Then they can take a large ferry to Tsawassen. O ya and lets tell route 8 to swim to Bowen while we are at it. Do you know the amount of traffic that travels on route 9? Route 5 could never in a million years deal with the traffic in its present configuration with all traffic going via route 1/5, you would be adding another ship that is the size of what is allready on 9. There is no possible argument that would make logical sense to eliminate route 9.

I haven't been on the Queen of Nanaimo for a couple of years... do they have the upper deck lounge open in peak season sailings? The upper deck lounge seems to be open more or less on every sailing this time of year.

According to the reservation page there is no Queen of New West on route 1 that I can see this winter. The Renaissance is on route 2 over Christmas with the Coquitlam but what I see that is odd is that they dont have extra sailings on route 2 on days leading up to Christmas unless they havent put them up yet. The Coquitlam and Cowichan will be running after the Holiday schedule on route 2 and the Renaissance is back on route 1 so where are you getting info about the New West on route 1?? It would be nice if the Renaissance would stay up in Nanaimo!! She runs Route 1 on the 19th, 23rd, 26th of December and I am sure more but that is all I really feel like looking up for you.

Speaking of soda, I once heard that BC Ferries used to serve soda in a can to customers for years because Coca-Cola nor Pepsi had issues with the reliability of power and water for fountain service. Any truth to that? I only started riding the ferries in 2001, so its way before my time. They have had fountain pop as long as I can remember, and that goes back in to the 80s.

While I'm in a picky & grumpy move (I'm reviewing sets of financial statements, today), let me ponder why people don't use a space-bar or shift-key when choosing & typing their forum username. Don't they realize that if they want to make their name say "E State", then they've failed if it shows as "estate" ? Don't people consider what a result looks like? That is a pretty random thing to post, is there any reason for these comments to come out now?

While away from my computer today, I was watching any movements of the TOKITAE on my phone. Here's a result: The TOKITAE sneaks around the Bremerton end of the WALLA WALLA. Like what happened during the delivery of the KDT ferries, the TOKITAE was delivered by tugs. The TOKITAE was delivered to Colman Dock rather than Eagle Harbor, the KDTs' port of delivery. I'll let you guess the names of the tuggy boats which did the "stork duty" in the delivery of that big new baby of the green and white family. No offence but why even post this?

Here is the May 2014 "On Board" BCFS newsletter. HERETake a look at the flower picture under "fresh pics" and tell me what it immediately reminds you of (in a first-glance, kinda / sorta / close way) Ya I really wonder where the inspiration for that flower came from lol But I am still having a good chuckle over the extremely photo shopped picture of the three deer as the header

The Nanaimo is currently tied up at Berth 2, Tsawwassen, and beside the New West. The Burnaby is now on Route 9, and she'll be at Tsawwassen from 9:20 to 10:10. Potentially good photo op coming up, since the Nanaimo will reposition to Deas I believe My parents are on the 10:10 route 9 sailing today, I just sent my Dad a message to try and get a few pictures for me.

I thank you both WCK and Mr DOT for posting and taking these pictures, I remember being a kid (10 years old) seeing them being assembled on the docks in Delta and Surrey. Again i can not wait to see what Mr DOT has lying around in his magic ship room for us to see next!

Now for another Ferry Whistle. Today, the Queen of Cowichan. Up Next, her Sister Ship... I am sorry but she still sounds like diying cow to me.

I have very voided memories of watching both the Spirts in actave pass in this scheme, and the V-s passing on the alternate hour made for memories that made me wish a I had a camera on my person at all times.

Today's news release mentions a $200-million improvement to Horseshoe Bay, and that any service cuts or changes to Routes 3 & 2 & 30 would need to be done in connection with any planned changes to Horseshoe Bay. We'll find out what this means in a few months, but who knows if this will drastically change the status-quo, and whether Horseshoe Bay will be made to run fewer or more routes? I have no idea, at this time. But the eventual news could be significant. My guess: In the next round of cuts route 30 gets cancelled. We go back to the way things were before 1990 with all Nanaimo & 'Up Island' service provided through Horseshoe Bay. With the way they have been cutting sailings on route 30 so far I would tend to agree with this in the form of closing Duke point and running everything out of Departure Bay or as commented eliminating the route all together. Even the service cut backs that have been done on route 2 show how all this corporation is only looking at stats. Everything that was released today just proves how the only thing that matters to the BC Ferries is the bottom line based on what the government mandates they do. This just shows the Liberal government does not care about the coastal community's because they don't need there vote.

I decided to try and keep an open mind when I started reading the report, that became hard as soon as I saw they would be doing a trial for slot machines one route 1. I see some room for some sailings being cut on some routes, but this is to almost extreme. Cutting route 40 I think is long over due but a waste of the millions just spent on the ship doing the run with no other use for said ship. Slot machines.....really?!?! How long is this gong show going to continue? With no end in sight of new ships being required to come on line in the next few years costs are going to continue to rise, fairs are driving ridership down. At this rate BC Ferries will have a bunch of boats that will just sit tied up because everyone will just move away from all of these small community's.
But alas as long as this government wants to continue with this failure of quasi privatized corporation, nothing is going to change and the slope will get steeper and slipperier.

I can see there would little use for the old wack but less then two years after her last major refit/getting coastalized retiring her? What a waist of money, or could we see her as the 9a vessel this year?
I guess I should ask when her licenses expire before I would do any speculation.

I do not understand this post, better transit plan a Con? Is a bridge more expensive then a tunnel? And I really can't see them leaving the tunnel open after the replacement is constructed (And I do not understand how that is a Pro or a Con) Better transit is con because they could have done study to see if TransLink could have increase ride ship on routes that go from South of the Fraser to Bridgeport. I do not know about the second one. The closer of the tunnel will happen during the construction period if it is going in the same spot. But if it increase transit after is built it would Positive to South of the Fraser. They would never close the tunnel if the new bridge was not compleate that would create a chaos, I would asume they would build it next to the tunnel much like the Portman. And I don't think translink could have enough buses run to alleviate the kind of congestion that we see during rush hour.

Pros and Cons for the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel Cons: Expensive; Better transit plan; Close the tunnel when it built. I don't know about this con. Pos: Helps during peak period; Safer than the tunnel; HOV lane. But the port should help pay for it because it will allow larger ocean going freights to dock in Surrey port. I do not understand this post, better transit plan a Con? Is a bridge more expensive then a tunnel? And I really can't see them leaving the tunnel open after the replacement is constructed (And I do not understand how that is a Pro or a Con)
