SOBC is scheduled back in service March 27th which makes me happy! Bye Bye Renaissance! Back to full Buffet service, lol! Nope, she is going to replace the Coastal Celebration on April 6, 2013 unlit May 10, 2013 during the Coastal Celebration first dry docking. Then, the Coastal Inspiration from May 10, 2013 unlit May 27, 2013. Both of the Coastals are getting the blue line during their refits. What makes you say the both the Coastals will be getting the "blue lines"? I am hoping to see them strip all the Olympic banners off of them but that is an unknown. Do you know something we don't? Or are is this just based on what has been done to one sister will be done to the other two?

I find this very interesting for several reasons. The use of the "emergency" control button as a part of standard protocol when at berth to me seems to defeat the purpose of having a 'emergency" button. And with this button being used for a different purpose then it was meant for, I could see being lost in a emergency situation. Why when a failure occurred in the pitch system does only a little light on the console light up? In my mind this alarm that they now have would have been a must. Then there are the failures on behalf of the crew, not following the testing of the pitch of the bow propeller then not knowing how to run the emergency over ride. Finally the aspect that the bridge crew not simulating this a failure like loss of pitch control is more or less blows my mind. Add equipment failure and all the small mistakes and issues arise quickly.

As of right now, all of the 1024 x 768 forum photos are displaying as 996 x 747. - is it just me, or is anyone else seeing a narrower forum ? ps: signature & flagship are still the correct sizes, but the various photo posts are all shrunk. Everything looks good for me... all images and forum displaying at the proper width. What browser are you using? I use Firefox... I wonder if that makes a difference. I am also running Firefox. I just tried running Internet Explorer and it made no difference.

I personality hate the combined Coast Cafe with the Gift Shop. But for the longer routes the ferries would need a cafeteria on board. I could see on board the Coast Cafe express combined with the Gift shop. How about nothing at all and enjoy the scenery? I guess that's what all of us ferry fans would vote for! I would have a hard time enjoying a good ferry trip with out a good old bacon cheese burger, and I don't think I am alone on that one!

I don't believe that the ' Nanaimo was the regular route nine vessel as of 1986. '86, the Expo year, was an interesting summer for ferry fans. Queen of Tsawwassen and Queen of The Islands were the route five vessels. I don't have my files with me here at Hornby (yet), so I can't check on the ' Nanaimo's placement that summer. I have a number of photos that can be seen on earlier pages of this thread (and on my Flickr), that clearly show the Queen of Nanaimo in the southern Gulf Islands. These photos show her in the pastel blue livery, some even without the BC 'Spirit' logo which dates the pictures as 1982 or earlier. I am fairly much certain the the Nanaimo was operating on route 9, but it may well have been a summer only thing. I also note one photo of yours, Neil, taken of the Nanaimo at little River, which you say was taken in 1982.
I know from my experience that the Nanaimo was only on in the summer till the early to mid 1990s. I don't know when she started on the run as the summer boat but I remember vividly the Tsawwassen being our winter boat till my guess would be 1995??

Last weekend when cleaning out my grandfathers desk I have come across a large amount of developed film, does anyone have any experience of a good way of making them digital. I know the easy way would be to find the actual pictures and the search is now on but I would like to get a copy right from the negatives. I have no issue with buying a scanner of some kind but would like feed back from some one that might have done this in the past. Thanks for your input guys. I have a tonne of experience with this. You will, if done properly, get much better results from originals (e.g. negatives & slides) than you will from machine prints, which are after all, copies of the slides or negatives. You will need a half decent scanner (probably a 'flat bed' photo scanner such as those made by Epsom) which are designed to handle transparent originals. These come with carrier frames which you insert the slides/negatives into. Software that invariably comes with these scanners will allow you to 'clean up' your scans by removing dust & scratches, restoring colours, etc. Beware, scanning can be rather time consuming and the learning curve can be rather long. Are all the originals on 35mm film? If you want to discuss this further I would do what I can to assist you. Everything I have found to this point seems to be 35mm, I know my dad has a pile of slides that I would like to put to digital for him so something that would do a pretty good job of both would be in my mind a must. I will begin doing some research on a flat bed photo scanner.

Not a schedule, but a pair of old ferry tickets I found while cleaning out my grandfathers old desk last weekend. I have no idea when they might have been from and with my grandfather not being around anymore no one to ask. Any thoughts on a rough era they might be from?

I wonder why it'll take the NIP 55 minutes longer than the Island Sky to do the Saltery Bay-Blubber Bay crossing? They're service speeds are very similar. Loading at Saltery Bay probably delays the crossing. I don't see how it will take 55 minutes longer to load the NIP

Ok, so: -Thanks everyone for the advice, it will be greatly needed in planning this trip! -I do also think that the island should be renamed Salish Islands or something that would include all of them -What about Thetis and Kuper? -I have a bike, so does my family and also have a Bike rack four our car. Personally, I don't mind the hills as biking is my main transportation way when not with a (expensive) camera. Just for the little story, I bought my actual bike 2 years ago and it already has done 1,500 km with me! -Re: WCFF guidebook: I did have a look at this and I guess that printing it out will be more efficient than reading this online. Thanks to all the Voyagers and MP for doing that! -So here should be an approximate trip intinary for what I plan: Day 8 (Continuing from Sunshine Coast): Arrive salt spring in the late afternnon via Vesuvius Day 9: Salt Spring Day 10: Salt Spring and in late afternoon sailing on the Bowen (if possible) to Mayne Day 11: Mayne Island Day 12: Early morning ferry to Pender (Mayne/Qcumber) - Pender in afternoon Day 13: Pender Day 14: Early morning to Galiano (Mayne/Qcumber, which ever one I did not take on the other one) - Galiano in afternoon Day 15: Galiano Day 16: Galiano Day 17: Nanny to Tsawwassen and drive home (including a stop for the Whatcom chief ) Again, a big thank you! I think most of your questions around the travel portion have been covered. As for places to stay there is only once camp site on Mayne that I would recommend, it is Mayne Island Eco-camping and Tours found here If renting a cabin would be something you are interested in then The spring water lodge would be something you would want to look in too. (It is much nicer now since the renos they did on the cabins last year) They are located right on Active pass. Other wise anything almost anything on the Mayne island accommodations page found here

A question from someone who has never seen let alone ridden the Island Sky.
With the conversations around the lack of versatility in BC ferries fleet and this ship has been brought up several times in the "building for a particular route." My question is why is she not versatile? Based on numbers she would work in the locations that the Capilano or the Cumberland. (I know the Cumberland has a lager car capacity because of her upper rams that the Cap does not have)
Or is it just a matter that a ship that has a car capacity of 125 should have been built as a closed car deck allowing her to run the straight all year round?

Those vessel AEQ numbers are pretty high. I would agree with Jim that a 125-car vessel is adequate for servicing Route 17, seeing as the Burnaby sails empty a lot of the time. The Sidney/Tsawwassen were an ideal size for this route, because of the smaller capacity but full galley service. As for Route 9, traffic sees such a high fluctuation on this route that it's difficult to judge what is adequate. In addition, as Jim also mentioned, discussions are ongoing of potential route alteration. Those discussions could potentially be integrated and have an effect on what kind of vessel is built. I am personally on board with 3 125-car vessels that are closed deck, with full galley services, similar to the Tsawwassen/Sidney. The logic here would be that one could be sent to Route 17 full time, and one to Route 9 full time, with the third providing for extra Route 9 service during summer/Christmas, and relief service the rest of the year. However this scenario is unlikely, due to increased costs of building a third vessel, and increased crewing/operations costs. I agree with you but I think 2 of 124-car vessels should service route 9 all year. One 125- car vessel on route 17. I would build four and make the fourth the spare for Earls Cove - Saltery bay, route 5, route 9, route 17. There is no way to justify having two ships on route 9 this time of year, I haven't been on the nanny this winter but most of the time in the winter off months you could shoot a cannon down the car deck. I strongly agree with everything Mileagephoto said on the 3 boat idea but I know building a third vessel would never fly with the situation we are now in.

I am on a Mac and have right button on my mouse, and I also have spell check on fire fox. Oh. I have a 2012 model ( upgrade to highest update so far) and 2007 model which both do not have right button on the mouse, all least I have not tried yet. I use Safari. My mouse is not the standard one that came with our computer it was one I bought after the fact. I would try using FireFox. It has spell check that you can use, and it works on my Mac and my HP laptop.

Nice shot Scott, but I must say I thought BC Ferries were in a bit of a financial problem. From just recently getting pricing on putting banners on all of my company's vans I know a banner like that are not cheep. And to add to it I find it very comical that (knowing this falls in to my obsession with trucks) the dodge we are looking at has cheap Ford hub caps with the centers cut out of them. Thank you, Mayne.
BC Ferries has actually had this van wrapped for a while. This van appears in community events and other festivities ever since the Spirit of Community float went up in flames below the Berth 2 walkway at Tsawwassen. That is interesting with all the time I have spent at both Tsawwassen and Swartz bay I have never seen this van. Thanks for the info Scott!

No, under them. The middle part of the wrap was removed to expose the "BCFerries" and the blue stripe. They were fully painted before having the wraps applied. Prove their underneath the current wraps. I do not believe you. Really!?!?!? I don't have pictures but I got to see them with my own eyes. The picture is not sufficient for you? It was posted by a reputable source.
