Does anyone know if this beach on Newcastle Island is accesible? Or is it accessible only with some serious bushwacking and/or walking down steep hills? If it's not private property and not extreme terrain to access it, I am defenitly going to make a point to go there. I know that Giovando Lookout is nearby, but I like to get photos of ferries from locations that haven't been visited or where we've seen few photos from that location. We've seen lots of great ferry photos from Giovando Lookout.

Kayaking around Newcastle is quite popular, and that way you could drop by the beach and check it out, and get many more photo-ops from other neat angles. All of Newcastle Island is a Provincial Marine Park.

I also don't want to get in the ferries or seaplanes way as one of those annyoing kayakers, because seaplanes take off in that narrow channel and the ferry terminal is quite close.

The water is plenty deep there, and on most days it's generally calm, so you can comfortably stay less than 30 meters from shore without worrying that you might get swept onto the rocks. You'd have to be near the middle of the channel to get in the way of planes, and you'd really need to be stupid to paddle into the middle of Departure Bay and intercept the ferries.

Hey. I am wondering, where a good place to view the vessels that go to Tsawwassen? Excluding the beaches at Tsawwassen.

It seems like a good location.

You know there is a park in Tsawwassen which is a good place to view Tsawwassen Terminal from. I bet if you look through earlier pages in this thread you will find out the name of the place and just where it is located. Be warned though that the distance between the two points means that some sort of tele lens or zoom with good reach will be needed.

Yeah, and that's a beach, so if I recall correctly, that was effectively disqualified by your standards. You also need at least a 150 mm lens or 10x optical zoom on your camera to get a good photo.

A five second Google search on "fujifilm finepix s1500 specifications" got me an answer for you. You have a 12X zoom lens which is probably adequate. Another spot worth checking out as a place to take photos of Tsawwassen Terminal from is the Roberts Bank Superport (aka DeltaPort) causeway.

I don't think so as it should be possible to shoot photos from the road right-of-way. But new port security (e.g. MARSEC) might mean the whole causeway is closed to the public. I had a problem with this just a few weeks ago at Prince Rupert's Ridley Island access road.

Hey. I am wondering, where a good place to view the vessels that go to Tsawwassen? Excluding the beaches at Tsawwassen. To answer your question, my favourite spot is Georgina Point on Mayne Island. A perfect view of the vessels that go to Tsawwasen. Next time that you have opportunity to visit the gulf islands, go to Mayne and visit that park (with the lighthouse). - You'll have ferries passing right in front of you, as you sit on a log on the beach. Perfect spot for ferry watching.

The northern end of Newcastle Island is a great spot to get up close and personal with the C class ripping by, but you do have to hike through rough terrain to get there, and be careful not to get washed off the rocks by the ferry wake. There's a big rock you can climb up on, and gets you right out into the action, just exercise extreme caution.

Mr Cheese: google Fred Gingell Park Tsawwassen. You'll find all the answers to your questions. Paul has shown you the map. As mentioned, you'll need at least a 15x optical zoom to be able to capture the ferries.
Oh, and don't forget to go down the stairs to the beach. The walk down isn't that bad and its worth the photos.

What do you mean about my cenera reach (zoom)? 'Reach', meaning the ability of the camera to bring that which is far away close. Another way to say this is to talk about the magnification power of the lens. A lens with a power of 1 sees approximately what the human eye sees. The scene your camera records is not magnified or shrunken. Wide angle lenses actually shrink scenes so that the camera can take in a 'wider angle'. Your camera with a 12 times zoom factor probably goes from a modest wide angle setting with a magnification of about 0.5 up to a reasonable 'reach' of 6 times magnification. That means at its most zoomed in setting the lens makes what is in the scene appear six times closer than it does to the human eye. Because your camera goes from a wide angle setting of about 0.5 up to a tele setting of 6.0 the total zoom factor is 12 (= 6 divided by 0.5). P.S. This forum has a 'Spell Check' function available to you. Please check it out.

So, do you think my camera will be able to take pictures from Fred Gingell Park that I can post on the forum?
