I guess I can't actually think of more examples, which would make for some rather slim pickings. Ah well. I have a fascination with how much a vessel can be modified in her lifetime, and was looking for an effective way of showcasing that.

I'm trying to think of some west coast examples for this: - Taku versus Malaspina/Matanuska - Queen of New Westminster versus Burnaby/Nanaimo - Powell River Queen versus Bowen/Mayne Are there any other examples, and how likely are there to be photo opportunities for those examples? Issaquah/Kittitas/Kitsap/Cathlamet versus Sealth (fairly/not/fairly/not common) (Possibly) Hyak/Kalletan/Yakima versus Elwha (very/fairly/very common) [EDIT] Don't know if it would count, but Klahowya/Tillikum versus Evergreen State (fairly/fairly common)

With the Issaquah she's the one most commonly at the same place that the Chelan is. I don't really think that the difference between the refurbrished supers and the originals (and NOT the Elwha vs. the rest) would be noticeable enough, except if you have a picture looking at both head-on. And for the Evergreens, same thing, except if you had an end-to-end shot it would not be noticeable. And for those of us that were taking pictures back when the Steel Electrics were in Service, the Kliticklat had quite an unusual passenger cabin compared to the rest of the class.

For anyone who has old historical photos, a better comparison would be the Enetai and Willapa vs. the Klickitat, Illahee, Nisqually, and Quinault. For those of you who don't know what I am referring to, all 6 Steel Electric ferries looked pretty much the same when brought up to Puget Sound from San Francisco. Black Ball turned Enetai and Willapa into single-enders, making them significantly different than the remaining 4 Steel Electrics.

We already have January 2014's topic chosen as per the thread already on the go. We will also likely soon start putting up & discussing our best photos of 2013. I wanted to suggest that in January each of us who take ferry photos submit our 'best of the year' (that can be fit into the 60 x 17 aspect ratio) and then we will choose from among them which ones will be our WCFF page headers.
I have a second suggestion that in some months such as right now we have two threads re the flagship/header for that month; one to submit entries only and a second one for discussion. I think one thread with the entries only would allow moderators to more easily set up the ballot at month's end. The other thread would be for people to make suggestions and to put up photos for feedback from the moderators & others as to whether they meet the intent of that month's theme. It would also be a place to display headers that you have created but decided not to submit as actual 'entries'.
What do others think?

This is a great idea, and the moderators have decided to do this for the February 2014 flagship (nominations received during January). - this could become an annual theme. February works well, because nominations can happen in January (otherwise we'd miss out on photos taken during December) Should the regular "3 nominations per person" apply? Should we say that any photos that have already won a flagship are ineligible? ==================
I have a second suggestion that in some months such as right now we have two threads re the flagship/header for that month; one to submit entries only and a second one for discussion. It would also be a place to display headers that you have created but decided not to submit as actual 'entries'. For setting up the ballot, a cluttered nominations thread is ok, as long as people are clear that a certain post is their official nomination. Most of us edit our original posts a few times during the month, and so it's easy for all of us to say "ignore this one" or "this is the one". So from my viewpoint in setting up the polls and in managing the nominations month, I'm ok with having 1 thread. I'm happy to put up with a bit of clutter, for the sake of keeping the nominations and related discussion connected.

Yes, I would love to have a February ballot be the "3 best of 2013" pictures from each member. That would be a great tradition to start for each February. Any good ferry photo would be eligible! (so no rejects)

Any good photo would be eligible! (so no rejects) 'Any good photo' so long as its a ferry photo taken during 2013 (i.e. fits in with our primary theme the ferries of the Pacific coast on north-western North America or associated inland areas. Having entries & associated discussion in one thread (rather than separating them as I suggested above) is fine with me. This is for the moderators to decide amongst themselves. The onus is upon us to be clear as to which photos are actually our submissions. Having said this I would expect Mr. Horn, as moderator in charge of the current January 2014 flagship, not to use any photos that I have put up so far as I have not yet made it clear which photos are my submissions. One last thing not related to future flagships is a thread to discuss our non-ferry photo highlights of 2013, such as for me my best rail pics... Should we have one, and if so, where?

Okay, I meant any good ferry photo. How would we prove that it was actually taken in 2013? You can't just look at the "date taken" in the metadata, because when we crop the photo in a photo-editing program to the flagship, it often puts the date that we did this in the metadata, especially if it is saved as a different file than the original photo. Another question I have: Am I right in saying that photos that have won previous contests (such as the two Evergreen State photos I entered into the contest for September) are not eligible for entry into this contest? Or can I still enter them, considering that they are among my favorite photos taken in 2013? If not, well, I'm sure I can find three other good photos to enter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember seeing a "Best pics of 2012" thread in the Forward Lounge, I think. Maybe we could do something like that and even post our best photos of whatever, and not just ferries.

My feeling is for a best of 2013 theme entries be limited to two per person. As for photos that may have already been selected as flagship photos in previous months in 2013, I feel that if they truly are what you feel is your best, then they ought to be eligible. This is the moderator groups call, however.
Lastly, it may be possible to 'cheat' and enter a photo taken prior to 2013. However, if we find out that that has been in fact done, I personally would take a 'dim view', as I expect the moderators would too. Some sort of 'punishment' may be in order.

Yes, I was thinking about this as well. I think the best place for this is in the Forward Lounge, beside the Assorted Photography and Super Natural BC threads.

I'm currently working on a video compilation of my clips from 2013. I'll be posting it in the forward lounge thread, after December is complete.
I've noticed that I shot lots of video during 2013. I'm having fun compiling the various outings into 20-second clips.

I like the idea of having a Best Photo flagship, and here are some thoughts I had: Should the regular "3 nominations per person" apply? Well, either we can adopt that approach and vote on the whole submissions, or we can have each person choose just one photo and we'd show them all throughout the year (though that might cause issues if the picture is not carefully chosen and of minimal quality (ie. not straight, out-of-focus, etc.). Should we say that any photos that have already won a flagship are ineligible? Well, wouldn't it be logical that your best photos are some of the ones that won a flagship? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember seeing a "Best pics of 2012" thread in the Forward Lounge, I think. Maybe we could do something like that and even post our best photos of whatever, and not just ferries. We had one last year, in the BCFs board ( Link. While it wasn't limited to just ferries I though it was a good idea. Now that we have a thread up for non-ferries, should we create a similar one for ferries? Not all best ferry pictures can be cropped into flagship, and I thought that would also be a good place to not only talk about photography but ferry trips or other related events.

I would agree with the Best photo.
I would allow one photo per-member, of a ship, and allow each one to be the header for the day instead of voting.

Well, I didn't think it was a dumb question to ask, and I was wanting to get various people's feedback. So I don't think my question warranted that stuck-out tongue emoticon.

Try to get some different photos up, maybe selections that the contributor thought were good, but didn't meet criteria from the different flagships through the year. I see the "different nominations" policy as an opportunity for members to showcase images not previously seen. Geez FH, why would you ask such a silly question, when telepathy is a far more effective way of collecting feedback.

I see the "different nominations" policy as an opportunity for members to showcase images not previously seen. I agree with that. I have one or two fantastic pictures that I've taken over the course of this year, but have not entered them in any Flagship contest simply because they didn't meet the criteria. I think we should encourage members to enter photos that haven't won previous flagships. But, we shouldn't make that a requirement. If there's a photo that won a flagship contest that somebody considers their best photo of the year, we should still let them enter it. I just had another thought, this regarding voting: With all these great pictures being entered, it's going to be really hard to choose which ones to vote for. I think it might be a good idea to make the voting period a bit longer so people have more time to decide. What do you all think about this idea?

I would allow one photo per-member, of a ship, and allow each one to be the header for the day instead of voting. That would only work if this forum had 28 members that entered photos. But we definitely have way more people on this forum than that. And plus I like to see the header image change as I go from page to page on this forum.

Yet another idea for a Forum Flagship theme for a future month, inspired by a Flickr group called Smokin' it Up!. That group is all about smoking railway locomotives, both steam & diesel. The idea would work well for ferries and might provide an opportunity for 'EG Fleet' & others to dig out some really old b&w pics from the steam ferry era. Here is an example of a fairly modern ferry 'Smokin it Up! This shot was used as an entry in a flagship contest back in 2008...

Given the drop-off in participation in flagships in recent months, us moderators are wondering if we should change to "2-month flagships" instead of doing a new one each month. - What do you think of that idea?
Is the monthly flagship a concept that has sailed away? ie. is it less interesting or relevant now?
What would it take to revive it? Or is it past its prime?
Thanks for your feedback.
