re Mac's writing style:
I agree that it's too absolute & for-sure. I like to phrase things like "in my opinion", or "I think that" or "to me it looks like...."
But Mac simply says "This ship will be scraped in 4-5 years.".
Mac leaves no room for discussion or error....and I find that arrogant, whether it's intended or not.

I learned it from this board and word. Also for years now the Nanny has been on the top of the list for replacement.

Mac, please read the earlier posts on this thread. It's not your facts we are disputing, but it's your manner of presenting them.
Read my earlier comment re "arrogant" posts.
It's all in the delivery.....

I learned it from this board and word. Also for years now the Nanny has been on the top of the list for replacement. If it is getting a "Passenger Accommodation Renovation", I assume that BCFS is planning on keeping the Nanaimo longer than what they originally planned. However, it sounds as if little or nothing is being done mechanically, so we will see how long she is running before she experiences mechanical problems... I wonder when will BCFS Management will learn that the mechanical components of a vessel are more important than new upholstery and LCD televisions...

Well said, Scott!
The Queen of Nanaimo hasn't had many mechanical problems in the past few years, they should do alot of preventative work to her. Also keep in mind that the Nanny's refit's in past years have been long so they might have been doing more upgrades and more preventative stuff to her then. I guess we'll see what happens when she returns.

The Naniamo and Burnaby are both slated for 10 years of additional service. Retiring in 2016 and 2017 respectivly. This is available on their business plans (I think, if it's not there check the Annual Report). Anyways I heard it come out of David Hahns mouth, and he's always right Ha ha ha

Honestly, I would not be surprised if the Nanaimo comes out of its refurbishment with 24 carat gold bathroom fixtures...

Ha ha but as the philosophy goes, people will buy more hamburgers because of those gold sinks Supposedly this rebuild is on a 2/3 1/3 allocation for funds, I just can't remember which one is mechanical and which one is interior. I'd guess interior is 2/3.

The real purpose of this refit is a Company Union deal that will allow BCFS to lower crew but keep the ship on the run. The big ticket item will be the new life raft system which will be similar to the evac system on a plane compared to the chutes of other BCFS vessels.

How many crew will they be able to reduce by (and will that piss off the union and other nasty things)?

It is a joint union management deal crew will be reduced by 4 - 6. This will allow Route 9 to continue to sail. Their was talk of scrapping it.

Ferryguy I hope the new Viking M.E.C's function as they are designed, as their chances of them being used are inclined until BCFS starts to realize that there is more to a ship than just the passenger deck... While granted that it is a good idea to install a new evacuation system, there is no need for reupholstered seating, new carpeting, LCD televisions, etc... All of the engineers and crew do their best to keep the fleet running, but with all man-made equipment it will not last forever. If BCFS will spend more money on the Mechanical Equipment essential to the vessels operation, I think we would have fewer operational costs in the long run, safer ships and generally more happy customers... After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

What are the licenses on the Naniamo - how many crew to how many passengers? It seems like reduction of 4 to 6 crew is a lot.
