Is Queen of Burnaby getting some sort of huge refit next year? Because on the BCF site on the service notices it says that her monthly refit was going to go till the start of March but now it's going to be until the start of April. Heres what it said: www.bcferries.com/schedules/notices/notice02030501.html

Maybe it will get a big refit next year. I wonder what's going to happen to the burn.

I work on the Burnaby & the answer is yes, she/we are getting a major refit next year. That's because the Queen of Nanaimo is to be retired then & the Queen of Burnaby is getting an upgrade to her passenger facilities as she is to take over for the Queen of Nanaimo on the Gulf Islands. The first new intermediate vessel will supposedly take over on Powell River-Comox.

I thought the Queen of Tsawwassen was the going to be replaced by the first new Intermediate Vessel? , and then give Queen of Nanaimo and big refit too?

I wonder? Will it happen they have to put on more emergency chute systems to do this. I don't think it would be a good idea though to put a new intermidiate ferry on PR-Comox if it carrys 125 cars it would have easy overloads during the summer season they need one that can carry close to 200 cars because the Burn carrys 192 cars at the max.

Besides if the intermidiate vessel goes to PR-Comox what will do the Bowen Island route

Where is this intermediate ferry going?? I thought they wanted one for the Bowen Island run?? So the Nanny is being retired next year in 2006??? So the Burnaby goes to the Gulf Islands, then what replaces the Burnaby, another new intermediate or are they going to wait to build one for the Bowen Island run?? I thought the Tsawwassen would be replaced before the Nanny!
According to Johns profiles of the ferries the Nanny is to be retired in 2005/2006 which is still under review and the Tsawwassen is 2006/2007 So obviously it wont be 2005 for the Nanny but next year I guess.

Does anyone know what these new intermediate vessels are supposed to look like?

I've been trying to figure out what has happened in regards to the retirement or refurbishment of the Nanny and the Burn. So far there are a few facts and quotes that tell me the story (Am I forgetting anything?):
(Note: I don't know how to properly quote people on proboards, so quotes might seem a little basic)
Gregg Guest Re: Q .of Nanaimo « Reply #14 on: 10/26/2004 at 23:24:44 » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just Visiting figured I could answer a few questions since I work on the vessel (Queen of Nanaimo).
The Queen of Nanaiimo is not retiring anytime soon, at the next refit they are dropping about a million dollars on passanger areas.
kylefossett Full Member Re: Q .of Nanaimo « Reply #17 on: 10/27/2004 at 15:29:32 » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the queen of naniamo will probably not be replaced by the queen of burnaby. the queen of burnaby on an a licience can only carry 750 passengers becasue of the emergency chutes it is equipped with and the fact that the queen of naniamo can easily have 750 passengers on it on almost any given winter weekend sailing. also the queen of burnaby doesn't have a bow thruster(or that is what i have been told by an engineer ticketed to work on both boats) which would make it hard to dock at long harbour. that is one of the reasons the naniamo was picked over the burnaby when the went to the bigger boat in the late 80's early 90's. you will probably see a new ship before the burnaby on the southern gulf islands route
kylefossett Full Member Re: Q .of Nanaimo « Reply #21 on: 10/27/2004 at 19:07:43 » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- this is all knowledge given to me by a retired senior route 9 master and an engineer from route 9 Noleaksyet Guest Re: Q .of Nanaimo « Reply #24 on: 10/28/2004 at 21:15:52 » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Queen of Burnaby has a bow thruster. "
Yes it true! BUT the Queen of Nanaimo has 2 Bow Thrusters. The forward is driven by a Mitsubishi SR6 diesel engine and the aft is driven by a Caterpillar D353 diesel engine. The cat has been there since new but the Mitsi was added less than 10 years ago. The primary unit is the mitsi with the cat as a backup. While on the cardeck near the bow you may have noticed a large square hinged orange hatch along the centerline (forward of the stairwell to accom). This leads to the BP comp't. We engineers must do checks on the machinery down there prior to starting the units on the first run out of LH on AM's and PM's as well as during our normal routines while underway. These two units are started from the engine room control room when requested from the wheelhouse.
-----------------------------------------
It seems like maybe there was a change of mind at the last minute when it came to the major (million dollar plus) refit of the Nanny (Q. of Nanaimo). For a long while the BC Ferries website's RBI page had listed The Queen of Nanaimo as being replaced by the Queen of Tsawwassen for the Nanny's rumoured million+ dollar upgrade. Then, very suddenly, we heard another very different 'rumor' on the Yhoo!Groups - BCFerriesClub site:
From: "mirrleeskvssm" <ssi_al@h...> Date: Sat Jan 29, 2005 8:50 pm Subject: Re: Queen of Naniamo
The Queen of Nanaimo's major refit has now been delayed until after the summer at least. There will be a "mini-refit" from April 11-22 to cover SIC 16 items only, will keep the certificates valid. The major one will now likely occur sometime after October, although at this point no dates have been set. I am actually going to a meeting with senior managers next Friday to discuss this very issue, I hope that some of the rumours we have heard so far will be either confirmed or denied at this meeting. If I hear anything significant, I will post it here. The Tsawwassen's whereabouts at this time is unknown to me, we will be getting her for those 2 weeks in April though!

Anyone know and where is the Tsawwassen right now?? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So it seems to possibly look like we were going to be able to keep our beloved Nanny, until a last minute decision took it away from us.
Or am I mistaken?

Or maybe we will be left with both the Burn *and* the Nanny after all the major refurbs and retirements are finished with...

Notice the reference to the refit in October as being *Major* (i.e. the million dollar upgrades that could keep the Nanny in the fleet)

I don't know if BCF would go with this I mean they've been plowing these waters for 41 years. They're old ships but they are in pretty good condition we'll just have to wait and see what happens in the next year. They could still be in this for another 10 years.Personally, I hope they refit the Nanny, and put more chute systems on the Burn and open the upper deck area on her.

The last and the only time, I've been on the Burn was when I was 13. From what I remember, she was a nice looking boat on the inside. What I really liked about her Cafeteria was the window seats, and how nice the asthetics were.

The whole upper deck of the Burnaby is closed off. I dont know why.

Because of the emergency chutes it carrys less capacity. At first I thought it was closed off because they hadn't redone it yet because they didn't have the cafeteria ready for service when it came into service.

I think the burn would do well on route 9, with some renovations to increase passenger capacity. In my opinion, it's more comfortable vessel, I find the Nanny kinda cold on the inside, especially when the skies are grey and pissing ass rain.

Quote below from an article in the Comox Valley Echo (Apr 5)
"B.C. Ferries says the Queen of Burnaby that services the line (Comox-Powell River) is now expected to be used until 2015, with a $10 million retrofit in the coming years. They are promising no service or fee change to 2008."
That is good news! ;D

Say Sandi when are you going on the Queen of Burnaby today?

I think getting the Burnaby for the Comox-PR run was a super thing, one of the best things to happen to that run.
Do you know if there's still talk about relocating the ship's home-port to Powell-River, so that the first sailing is from PR, and the last sailing of the day is back to PR?
I've heard talk about this for 10 years, and I think it's the employee relocation issue that makes this point moot.
Sandi is on 1 side, and PRQ-16 is on the other (geographically speaking), so what do you think? Is the ferry running in the wrong direction?

Post by Balfour on Apr 9, 2005 10:17:50 GMT -8
I think it is running in the wrong direction. Powell River is very isolated. The only way in and out of it is by ferry. Vancouver Island is linked up to many services, but PR is not (PR Queen Kid can correct me if I'm wrong!)

I think getting out of PR should be free on the PR-Comox run cause we have to get out here by car by taking the ferry

I agree with you. Is it free going out of Saltery Bay? I know it is if you're going out of Langdale.
