Billiards table on the Radiance of the Seas: - the table that adjusts to the ship's rolling.

The secret to those tables is a huge lead weight beneath them, attached like a pendulum. The Pacific Swift had a table like this in the hold. It's about 6 feet long by 2.5 feet wide, and the weight below it is around 600 lbs, so it must be insanely heavy on this giant pool table.

From time to time I will put up an 'historical' cruise ship photo taken mostly by Mr. DOT, but occasionally by me, also. Veendam - Holland America Lines - exiting Vancouver Harbour under Lions Gate Bridge - viewed from Prospect Point, Stanley Park - 21 June 1980. She was heading out on an Alaskan cruise. HAL likes to re-cycle their ship names... photo © JST - Kodachrome 80-7-33 - Nikon-VueScan by Wett Coast, on Flickr

:)to my mind, these early holland america- alaska cruise- ex. moore mc-cormack liners were among the best looking, and the ideal moderate size for this trip! this company like our ferries, has been thru several rebrandings! :)mrdot.

I'll be able to give everyone a first-hand glimpse of what Holland America is like these days when we go on our Alaska Cruise on the M/S Westerdam this summer. I've never been on a cruise before so this should be exciting. I promise to take lots of photos.

:)this good looking slide was the basis of my original drawing which used to hang in one of the P&O offices downtown, and I still have an original which perhaps can be scanned. we did a short trip on her and later on the first 'sea princess', these were a much better size on the alaska cruise! :)mrdot.

Cruising is awesome! We love it I have been on three cruises and loved all of them. Never been with Holland America! If I was to go with them I would probably go on the Westerdam or the Oosterdam which are the bigger ships of that line.

She's been cheating Alang for a few years now, but has a gig doing cruises around Singapore. For how long, who knows, it will be a sad day when she inevitably winds up on the beach.

:)the cruise ships that are particularly vunerable to the alung recyclers are the older construction, especially if they were steam powered, and preceded modern diesel drive. But I am afraid some of the newer construction is not safe as new age, often the economy of large scale, rather ugly and not shipshape tonnage, will predestine these vessels to an early disposal :'(mrdot.

M/S Sagafjord of Cunard Cruises @ Ketchikan, Alaska - 2 August 1985. This vessel entered service in 1965 originally with the Norwegian Amerca Line (NAL). In 1983 Cunard took over NAL, and this vessel became a Cunard liner. She was considered one of the finest liners/cruisers of her time. photo © JST - Kodachrome 85-10-08 - Kodachrome - Nikon-VueScan by Wett Coast, on Flickr And about six years earlier, in Vancouver Harbour, when sailing for NAL... Unfortunately, we lost Sagafjord last year. Her final name was Saga Rose. She went to the scrappers in China. Her sister Vistafjord is still around now known as Saga Ruby and does exclusive cruises for the over 50 crowd.

:)yes, the Island Princess, one of the original 'love boats' of that past era, has the distinction of having the ferry authority of the day, having to relinquish, or rather amend their name for purposes of the british registry, and P&O donated a builders model of the 1954 Arcadia to the maritime museum for the jesture! :)a nice aside from the other weak-kneed stuff! :)mrdot.

Somebody needs to put an APB out for Ernie, aka Mill Bay. I think there's an argument to be made that these vessels WC has been treating us to recently were among the last to carry on the legacy of the elegant old liners. Even though there were some carbuncle-like attachments showing up above the bridge line, they still had a lot of the grace of the older ocean liners. I've always thought the '60s was a a pretty good era for ship design in general.
Not sure Mill Bay would agree, though.

I agree with Neil. It would be interesting to see a picture of one of these older cruise ships beside one of the behemoths of modern cruising for a comparison of size and design.

Seven Seas Mariner outbound under Lions Gate Bridge from Vancouver Harbour - c Summer 2002. Perhaps Mr. DOT can fill in some history on this ship, what company operates her, whether she is of the same line as the Seven Seas Navigator that I saw a few years ago near Ketchikan, etc. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr

From a 1969 publication by the Vancouver Real Estate Board, “Through Lions Gate.” General photographs credit in the book is to Ted Czolowski. I purchased the book for $3 at a local Rotary Club book sale, just for the interesting “back in the day” photos. Noted as a P&O ship.

:)the aerial shot of the P&O ship is the second to last Orient liner to come here, the Orsova, and the Princess of Vancouver rounding Brocton Pt. lite is also from the same timeframe, the downtown scene that does not seem that long ago to me. kind of dates me doesn't it! :)mrdot.
