Graham: Get out your fancy-pants camera. Water will be splashing through the berth at Duke Point this time. Hop aboard the Alberni or Vancouver and grab a few photos.
FALL STRIKES.

I love storm season. It makes for some interesting sights, especially on a Ferry.

Where else would I try to be during a storm but on a ferry with my baby.. err um beloved new camera? In fact, I've left a flexible day open in my schedule over the next week for just this purpose, to catch a storm on a ferry.

Even a short crossing like Denman to Hornby can be a challenge in rough weather. Lambert Channel is very exposed to storms blowing from the north or south, and Gravelly Bay, on Denman, has no breakwater protecting it- I've seen some pretty hard landings by the Tachek in the winter. Usually, the ferry makes a diagonal trip across to Hornby, but when it's really rough, it heads straight across and hugs the shore up to Shingle Spit. Sometimes the ten minutes turns into a very bumpy and entertaining fifteen- but better it's the Tachek, than the less seaworthy Kahloke of the summer season. Buckley Bay to Denman is hardly ever any fun, as Baynes Sound is just too protected.

Here's the forecast this morning for the Prince Rupert area (Triple Island and Holland Rock) - we have had our first real winter storm the last few days and now are on the downside of things.
Forecast: Gale warning continued. Southeasterly gales 40 to 45 knots easing to southwest 20 to 30 this morning and to 10 to 15 this afternoon. Winds rising to southwest 15 to 20 this evening. Rain easing to a few showers this morning. Seas 2 to 3 metres building to 3 to 4 this morning then subsiding to 2 to 3 this afternoon. Outlook. Moderate to strong west to southwest winds easing to light to moderate southerly.

Lets not forget the ton of rain we're supposed to get, and the cold temps too. Grouse could possibly get snow tonight. It's a classic West Coast Fall Storm.

Simple question:
Will 25 km/h winds in the Saanich Inlet affect the Mill Bay ferry ?
How much wind does it take to affect a small open-deck ferry like that?

According to the "British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. - Annual Report to the British Columbia Ferry Commissioner - Year Ended March 31, 2006" Temporary Service Disruptions Report section, on page 19, there were 5 "Force Majeure Round Trip Cancels" of the route due to "Weather".

Wow, they closed the outer deck eh?
I thought about taking Route 2 today, because I had to drop off my friend at Horseshoe Bay this morning, because it looked like it would be an interesting trip with the gale winds that are coming down the Strait. But of course, I didn't, stupid me.....

I am guessing when you were heading on the Coquitlam, it felt like being a boat in a bathtub.

Chris, lol, yeah if you feel like going you just gotta go man, I have done that too where I have thought I should go but I never did. Then you wish you had. Route 30 would be awesome in rough weather. I have been on route 30 once on the Coquitlam in rough seas.
